      Historically neutral way to speak about the events of 1918 is Civil War. We are descendants of both sides of the war and should strive for reconciliation.
      Furthermore, that the Finns kept their independence is partly due to outside circumstances, mainly due to the fact that German Empire lost the WW1. Still in November 1918 Kaiser’s son-in-law was pledged to be King of Finland and there were German troops on the ground, so the future was one of German’s vassal state at that point.

    My great-grandfather fought at Ilomantsi and Oinaansalmi in the winterwar. He was patrolling with his friends when a shell exploded behind him and he fell on the ground lifeless. Hes unit ran and left him and went to their camp thinking my great-grandfather died but the next day after the night my great-grandfather woke up on the snow and walked back to the camp. Everyone was shocked to see him still alive. Piece of shrapnel had flown into hes brain. No surgery was ever tried because doctors were afraid the shrapnel piece would have just ended deeper into my great-grandfathers brain.
    My great-grandfather still ended up back into fighting in continuation war even after the incident but what I heard is that he changed permanently and was often angry and short-tempered.

      There are probably plenty but how i do it is pretty plain but i like it! ;)
      You just peel and chop the veggies and boil them with salt and black pepper until they are soft and at some point (doesn't really matter when) add the chopped sausage slices. Boil them together until it kinda like thickens or mixes up. It becomes better and better after heating it up and cooling it back again during the coming days. On the side i usually have really dark rye bread with butter, cheese and ham on top of it and some cold milk or beer for drink.
      I usually put potatoes, onions, carrots and leek, but you can basically put other stuff as well. Was this of any use? :D

    What a fascinating story. The victory of Finland in this campaign was significant indeed and the courage and skill of her outnumbered soldiers really stands out. I would note as well though that the Soviet soldiers also fought bravely in a situation they probably would have rather not been in - they were very unlucky in their leaders, and paid the price for other peoples wicked decisions. May all those who died in this fighting sleep softly now.

      It's a older term that has most likely stuck in the English sources.
      The winning side went to war with the idea of fighting for the independence against the Russians, the loosing side thought they took part in communist revolution.
      The fighting between Russians and Finns was minimal but many still wanted to remember the war as a fight for independence.

    • @akselijalonen2372
      @akselijalonen2372 5 років тому +3

      People forget for example that when jaegers returned from Germany some of the joined the reds.
      People fought for ideology because Finland was already independente

    • @Stripedbottom
      @Stripedbottom 5 років тому +2

      Yeah, it even started like 6 weeks after independence was already granted and recognised by many countries, so it definitely wasn't a fight 'for' independence as such. There are some in whose interests it was to portray it as such, but that's just propaganda. There was considerable number of Russian troops still in Finland, true, but this was more the result of the chaos of Russian Revolution preventing evacuation than an organised attempt by anyone to keep them there. Those who stayed to aid the Reds did so out of their own volition, not by order or encouragement. Sad to say that many who were not even taking a side became the target of White atrocities simply for being russian; in many cases, it was almost as if the whites had /wanted/ an armed independence struggle against russians, and when they simply couldn't get one, they settled for disarming the russian troops and then having them shot.
      As for it being an 'indirect' fight for independence, even that matter is perhaps not as simple as it seems. The Red leadership was actually quite independence-minded, sometimes fiercely so, or even bordering on nationalistic. As late as WW2, this is clearly seen in the relations between Soviets and the Reds who had taken refuge in Soviet Karelia in 1918. As it happened, for political reasons the 'Red' faction was actually more keen on indepence in the autumn of 1917 than the 'White' faction!
      Most of the so called 'red jaegers' were by the way purged from the regiment, along with other undesirables, even before they set sail for Finland.

    The war in 1918 was not a "war of independence." It was a civil war between a Finnish leftist coalition led by democratic socialists against the country's entire social and economic elite who wanted to impose a monarchy. The left received military aid from the fledgling Soviet Union, which also fought in some defensive actions when the monarchists came near the Russian border. Meanwhile, the monarchists were backed by every monarchy on the continent and the German Empire ended the war by invading southern Finland and occupying Helsinki.
