Jim, thanks for commenting in Joe’s video telling us this dcd709 was in the Dewalt combo kit. I very much appreciate good information from knowledgeable people.
@@FishFind3000 it's all about the BPMs. The higher the value, it will take less time to get the tile drilled and less exposure to heat and possible cracking

been using the 709 for years and LOVE IT. The only thing it let me down with was drilling a 3/8” horizontal hole into really hard poured concrete… It DID do the job, but it was SLOW and i bruised my chest by leaning on the drill to speed things up ☠️

Hi Jim. I'm a Brazilian fan of your channel. Did you know that these drills have a metal chuck in Europe? Could we one day have these versions in our countries? Finally, congratulations on the excellent work so far.
I didn't know that! Both the Atomic and the Xtreme? Do you happen to know the EU part numbers? Maybe the metal chucks could be ordered as replacement parts. Thanks for watching!
My atomic hammer drill went through solid concrete. I struggled at first. But it went through like butter once I used a stronger battery and used one of my better masonry bits. Even beat out my old corded hammer drill
Excellent video! Love the comment guidelines as well. We all know the bloopers, sometimes once they start you just can't say the right thing to save your life... I am from the south so most people have trouble understanding me as it is.....🤣

I got the extreme 12v impact a few months ago For my g/f to replace the old 12v max drills with the same battery. I really want the hammer drill in 12 v Just have to hold out for a sale Great video
I owned both the DCD709 and it's Lowe's equivalent the DCD778. I have concrete walls at home but I have only used the hammerdrill feature for light tasks like drilling for some spax and blue concrete screws. The only time I put some 1/2" concrete wedge anchors I brought my beefier Bosch hammerdrill. I rarely ever use concrete bits above 1/4". But I was disappointed with performance on wood and I dislike plastic chucks so I sold them and got beefier tools. The included 1.5Ah batteries are garbage. I also have Powerstack and 5Ah batteries which are a step up but don't expect DCD796 performance, let alone DCD99X performance. In summary, these are good homeowner tools that won't empty your wallet and will do fine with up to 1" spade bits and 1/4" concrete bits.
I think not. The atomic is not far off in price and size with a powerstack and more power. Being compact is the only reason for purposely choosing a 12v and the m12 compact battery is the only 12v that really can get in tighter areas. While also having the power to get the job done 90% of the time.
I love a small hammer drill for tile. I install shower doors and there great but I run the makita compact and just recently tried to switch but the head on the dewalt atomic is too big for driving screws into my hinges. The makita is still my go to.
My one question is does half inch versus 3/8 Chuck really matter in a 12 volt you really need a half inch Chuck in a lower voltage drill compared to a half inch chuck and a 18 volt
I uave used the same 1/2" m12 hammer drill for years. It has no issue with pinching a 1/2 hole thru a solid poured block wall or solid precast walls. I've Eben punched a 1" bit a couple times. Irs slow on that but it will do it. The dewalt 12v drill is a toy.
The 12v hammer drill to me is worthless because it is only a 3/8” chuck and to me it should 1/2”. But when I saw the title of this I was really hoping you had the new compact DCD805 hammer drill.
The 998 and 999 are nearly identical, and the flagship models. The only reason there are two is because of contractual obligations to Home Depot and Lowe's. They are quite bulky, though, since they have 3 gears. For most applications the next tier down, the DCD805 XR, is more than enough and much lighter/smaller.
I already have the DCD701 (stronger than the M12 Fuel hammer drill I had), so I'm not sure I need the -706 just for the hammer feature, but it's good to know it's there if I win the lottery and want to get the full 12V line.
I am invested deeply in both platforms. If I want compact I go 12v. If I want power I go 20v or 60v. The atomic is just a compromise in my opinion. Your test showed virtually no difference between the two.
Ya I got 12 and 20 volt, the dewalt chargers charge both batteries so it's not a big deal, sometimes I'll have a 12 and a 20 volt tool on each side of my belt, I just use what I like
Here in the US, the "b" simply means it's a bare tool, not a kit, and the drill has "Atomic" branding. In the UK and possibly elsewhere, I think the "n" is what designates a bare tool, and all tools branded "Atomic" in the US are branded "XR" in the UK. The same is true of the DCF850 impact driver -- Atomic here, XR in the UK.
Hey brother, Is the DeWalt DCD778 Hammer Drill from Lowe’s any good? I can get it for $85 vs paying $180 for the DCD805B. I believe the 778 is Lowe’s version of the Atomic 709?
I haven't specifically tested that model. But I tested the corresponding 787 impact driver and it was about the same as the atomic 809, so it's reasonable to assume the Lowe's model would be similar to the 709, except a hair longer.
@@PhillyFixed fair point. Everything I am reading is showing it is decent for an homeowners/light DIY usage. I got two in a couple kits I bought and don’t need 6 drills so I’m gonna sell one and give one to the old man
Hey, i just ordered the 12V hammer drill, it looks identical to yours but it has a metal chuck instead of the plastic. The model number is DCD706D2-QW. Is this just the EU version of the one you are using? Or are there any other differences? :)
To be honest, I haven't used it outside of testing it on a couple of videos. My go-to DeWalt is the DCD800 and before that was the DCD791. I will say that WorkshopAddict had an issue on the new model Atomic, but I don't think they share the same gearbox.
After the 3 year long 12v fad of 2019, did anyone else actually go BACK to using their big honkin hammer drills because they actually _like_ having two handles on a drill?
I dont understand why they make a hammer drill this small. Maybe 5% of people that buy these are going to actually use the hammer for anything more than playing around. Also I have a Makita hammer drill. The newer on the market and after drilling 8 1/4" holes for tapcons I thought it was going to burn up. If you are doing one or two holes most likely these dewalts will be ok, anymore and you are starting to play Russian roulette.
