I am pretty sure it has to be years old because I have watched everythign he streams for years, but not too long ago as Casey looks older than he does today. Typically when he has big conversations with Casey they get uploaded to his YT, so that is another weird part about it.

    Stephen King has said that he puts characters in situations first and then explores what happens, and that even he doesn't know how his stories will end as he's writing

    • @nosferadu

      Right, Quentin Tarantino does the same thing. He said in an interview that when he starts writing, he only knows what will happen up to at most the mid point in the movie.

      Have heard the same thing from many different writers in different styles. Cormac McCarthy would be inspired by a kind of seed idea and then just write in a flow state until the book was done. No planning-out at all as far as I know.

    [insert generic protagonist], who must overcome their [obvious character flaw] to save [generic love interest/world/pet hamster] from the clutches of [one-dimensional villain]. Throw in some predictable plot twists, a sprinkle of forced diversity, and voila! You've got yourself an Oscar contender...
    In the magical land of [fanciful kingdom name], young [relatable yet special hero/heroine] embarks on a quest to find the legendary [magical McGuffin] before the evil [evil adjective + noun] gets their hands on it. Along the way, they team up with a motley crew of sidekicks including a wisecracking [animal companion], a lovable [stereotyped comedic relief], and a mysterious mentor figure played by [aging actor trying to stay relevant]. Together, they face off against insurmountable odds, learn valuable lessons about friendship and self-discovery, and sing catchy songs written by [pop star du jour]. Will our plucky hero succeed in time for the big musical number finale? Spoiler alert: Of course they will! Roll credits and cue sequel announcement.

      Obvious character flaw? If the character is a woman, black, or LGBT, that is sexist, racist, and homophobic. The character was born perfect, and only needs to believe that, regardless of what others say.

    As someone who worked in VFX and SFX I find that movies (and TV) have changed dramatically. Shows are now produced to either sell something, or push the SDF message or draw in as many Chinese viewers as possible. Where it used to be that movies were made about a subject that the producers and directors were passionate about. When I worked for a TV show it felt that there was no real passion. When I work for a student or an indie film, I feel and see passion. I see stuff that is unique, not necessarily my taste or my style but at least something you go like: "oh this is unique!" or "wow this is clever!" and in all of them you feel passion and drive. In commercial products it's just the product and the people involved are "just" there to make their living, they do their job but aren't involved with their heart.
    I spoke to a gaffer once who was on the set of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade as a electrician. He said he felt jazzed working there, he knew they were making something special and everybody was driven to do their best. This is now, according to him, completely gone. And I don't know if he's jaded like me in IT or not. But I don't see pictures anymore that I feel there's a lot of passion in them.

    This is a fake problem that only exists if you don’t actually watch movies. There are dozens and dozens of good movies that are challenging and experimental that come out every year, and they’re not just good because they’re different.
    I’m not going to judge the current state of American cuisine by talking about McDonald’s

    • @slynt_
      @slynt_ 6 місяців тому +3

      You have to go quite far outside the mainstream in most cases to find those. That didn't used to be true. My grandmother used to go to the cinema every Friday, and there would be different films on every week. Most of them weren't great, I'm sure, but the quantity of classics that came out of that era is insanely higher than today.

    • @mastermusician
      @mastermusician 6 місяців тому +1

      I just don’t agree with that at all. You might not find them in every movie theater, but they will be available on any steaming service at worst for rent and highly advertised. Most people consume movies that way now anyway so the access is literally the best its been and the number of good new movies available to the largest number of people on any given year is the best it’s ever been.
      Has there been a shift away from theater releases? Sure, but we can’t expect that to not be the case given how many other forms of media consumption have moved away from big gatherings.

    Its a violation of the characters. You have to believe in the characters for characters and stories to be believable. The characters “will tell you where they will go”, if you have made them well because they have needs, preferences and react to their environmentnin ways that are in their character to do so. This is what we call character driven movies and is in my opinion why “plot driven” movies usually don’t work because they often creates a dissonance where you have watched a character become established and the character goes and does a thing they never would do. Human have an unconscious awareness of humans. That does not mean the same as that the character can’t do weird stuff or that you can’t be creative with the character but theres a fine line where the character expresses ithin their range of being and where yiu “force the hand” and the character goes from being a real story that connects with the audience to become a robotic puppet on strings. Which is fine if the character is set up to not be an alive character from the beginning but if the fharacter is set up as a human that ressonates with “humanity” you as a film maker have made a promise to thenaudience and when you twist the character out of the blue you violate the audience expectation and not in a good way. Stories are more than mere fiction, its how humans make sense of the world, good stories mythologieses life in a way that boils down life to the essense where we learn more anout ourself and our environment and thats atleast one big part of the reason why stories have captivated humans through our ancestry on a more deeper level. This is not a concious process, of course stories are simple fun, but great stories that connects when you listen to them moves something more on a deeper level and becomes “memes” ingrained in the culture and legends for a reason. Great stories on a meta level helps humanity to survive, thrive and develop

    People who complain about this think hollywood is everything and there's no other options. My advice is to cancel your Netflix subscription and sign up for a Mubi account. You'll find cinema isn't just the american anglocentric view of the world.

    • @slynt_
      @slynt_ 6 місяців тому

      Mubi has good films (old American and European classics) and bad ones (DEI-checklist soymush written by someone from [insert most obscure country you can think of here]). The point is that it doesn't really have *good and new* films, because there aren't many around. Apart from some isolated directors in the West, the only country that seems to be having a bit of a golden age at the moment is Korea.

      I wouldn't have a problem with "woke" shit if the movies were good. I think bad movies are making a bad rep for progressive thought because it's put in there by people who don't care about that. Like, if you make a bad feminist movie, people will think feminism is bad. Simple power of association.
