@Jethro Torczon - Sorry for the late reply. Just saw your comment. Many of Frank Zappa's songs have an underlying message of individual liberty, which is the best way to convey such a message. Overtly preachy messages are as ineffective as Nancy Reagan's "Just Say No" public service ads. Here are some of my favorite Zappa songs with a stronger liberty message or relevant political commentary, often related to how governments at all levels have adverse effects on society and individuals: Society Pages Drafted Again Dickie's Such An Asshole Flakes When The Lie's So Big Rhyming Man Jesus Thinks You're A Jerk The Untouchables Promiscuous America Drinks And Goes Home The Meek Shall Inherit Nothing I'm The Slime 200 Years Old There are others, but that's a good start. :-) There's a lot of good social commentary in that mix as well. What country with elected representatives would choose to have such a system of government with such corrupt power over We the People? Organized religion and governments have conspired to control people throughout history and that's still at work today. Et cetera. I also recommend a short essay Frank wrote called Just Say Cheese. Newsweek assured him they'd publish anything he wrote that wasn't profane, but they rejected the essay as too idiosyncratic so it was used as the liner notes on the album You Are What You Is. It's available online. Frank Zappa is an acquired taste. Some people don't get it, and that's fine. But the music is of high quality albeit eccentric and very different than what's popular. Some of the lyrics are humorously profane by some standards, but even though Frank Zappa's music doesn't conform to popular styles many of the songs are unforgettable because the composition is accomplished with such precision that the sum is greater than the parts. Well in my experience, all the Rockstars I have listed to are amazingly educated about the topics and they are beautiful in their interviews and exactly know what they are saying! People are stronger than ever whilst they listed to ACDC, LP, Led Zeppelin, Nirvana, Zappa and the list goes on! I still do not understand that how Rock is been watched with a stink eye and the people who listen to Rock is considered as outlaws living for no good while we have people jamming to music like WAP, promoting status quo against the high fashioned brands! Proud of all these stars and Rock will stay strong for the ages to come 💜💜💜

Very excellent points young man you know I was a child one of the children that the pmrc were trying to protect back in the day and even at 10 years old I knew what they were doing was Despicable. Nobody wanted the pmrc to win. Except maybe their husband but everybody else in the country did not want them. And I believe that it's partially why Al Gore didn't get a larger percentage of the vote when he ran and ultimately ended up losing. I believe Tipper ruined his chances, and I believe if he had won we would have seen a resurrection of the pmrc and the resulting censorship push would have been nearly impossible to stop.
Well done John Denver. Terrifying attempt to abuse political power put into context by this artist they assumed would be supportive of this legislation.
Yep. Right around 09:12, this vid really lays it out th way it needs to be heard..... "they could have... But that isn't what they did". Thas th key difference between this vid vs others that address th same subject /era.... While th others come at it with a typical, self-congratulatory air and lavish praise on how eloquently th world of rock supposedly defended itself, this vid spells out both sides of th argument AND provides better insight into how th instigative party could have approached th matter. Very well done.
I'm against censorship, but I'm for content rating systems, like the ESRB. (Even if such sytems are inperfect, misused by Karens, and probly ought to be overhauled.)
Clip of Jordan Peterson at 12:50 is a text book case on how not to use clips. The one anti-censorship professor is shown after a series of pro-censorship ones without any context to tell the viewer that this particular one is not like the rest.
heatseeker there are actually two clips of anti-censorship academics in that segment, both of whom regularly experience challenges to their ability to speak publicly. Peterson is one, Christina Hoff Summers is the other. The point of both being to show some people who are hurt by the censorious mob.
Mea Culpa. I was misled by the clip showing him in a comfortable studio interview looking like it implied that he was part of the oppressors. It would have helped to show Peterson being shouted down, just like Sommers was.
I think you're a bit out of your league including them, as these two people in particular may have an expressed anti-censorship message, but at the same time spread some very nasty authoritarian conservative thoughts. Likewise, implicitly quoting progressive, feminist and related recent developments as censorious is missing the point by a mile and betrays a one-sided view of the matter. Be wary of the anti-SJW crowd, they're a tricky bunch. All that being said I enjoy your videos a lot and I agree with your anti-censorship message.
It doesn't matter what Peterson and Summers' thoughts are, SJW protests have attempted many times to stop them from publicly speaking, which is censorship. if you agree with anti-censorship, then it can't apply to the people you agree with more than the people you disagree with.
As I’ve heard others say, Dee Snider DEFINITELY outclassed Congress, the wives & that entire silly committee! When Dee basically said Tipper Gore had a dirty mind was AMAZING!!! 🤣😅 All Al Gore could say was, “yeah.” It was magical!

@@funkyweapon1981 definitely not the latter. Preferably not one person, it would be far too easy to abuse. And as evidence based as possible, as in, has it correlated to actual violence against a protected minority, or does it match speech which has. Or does it explicitly advocate violence, that's always an easy one. I mean if I were deciding these cases I'd very much err on the side of caution against censorship, and only decide against clear cases, that's the sort of standard I'd advocate should be set.
I sure do remember those days. Zappa even released an album called Porn Wars with a track comprised of segments from the hearings mixed together with his usual brand of sardonic wit and masterful compositional musicianship. It does seem like it's rearing its ugly head again but from the left with the notion of protecting people from fascist ideas yet the tactics employed here are very reminiscent of the very ideology they claim to be against. Long live rock!
"Flash forward to the 1980's when a group of well connected busy bodies... I mean fine upstanding ladies." I see what you did there. Though I really like the idea of a Ratings system completely and totally independent of government interference. Like say individual businesses rating different forms of art based on their own criteria. In order to better aid parents, and consumers in general, in deciding upon what art they want to consume. Then again that could lead to people deciding not to create "edgier" art in order to get a lower rating constantly. Still their is always that little thing where people may just buy stuff with a higher rating, just because it's "edgier". It is an Idea but I can see how dangerously close such a system could come to censorship.
Great video. Zappa and the other bands didn't resort to legislation to sell their albums, Gore too had an audience, she should have respected freedom of expression and sought to widen her influence through creativity, not political manoeuvring.

I think John Denver was the best advocate of all because nobody expected him to speak against the council and he lowered a hammer blow. It was amazing to watch. I recommend it if you have the time..
My favorite is Dee Snider, for what I think are sort of similar reasons. Yeah, it's no surprise that he would want to be free to rock... but I don't think anyone expected him to be as articulate or knowledgeable as he was. He's equally surprising to Denver.
@@FEEonline I agree 100%, I was just as blown by Dee's eloquence as was Al Gore. I thought he handled himself with distinction and did it with humor and candor.
Proud of all these stars and Rock will stay strong for the ages to come 💜💜💜
Zappa was awesome. Good video
ffs, dee even wrote a song about how much he missed his newborn child when he was on tour
I'll bet Tipper and her pals interpreted it as being about S & M and drugs, because that's how they interpreted anything they didn't like or understand--which is almost anything.
"F, is for fighting, R is for red
Ancestors' blood in battles they've shed
E, we elect them, E, we eject them
In the land of the free and the home of the brave
D, for your dying, O, your overture
M, will cover your grave with manure
This spells out FREEDOM, it means nothing to me

Very excellent points young man you know I was a child one of the children that the pmrc were trying to protect back in the day and even at 10 years old I knew what they were doing was Despicable. Nobody wanted the pmrc to win. Except maybe their husband but everybody else in the country did not want them. And I believe that it's partially why Al Gore didn't get a larger percentage of the vote when he ran and ultimately ended up losing. I believe Tipper ruined his chances, and I believe if he had won we would have seen a resurrection of the pmrc and the resulting censorship push would have been nearly impossible to stop.
The fact "we're not gonna take it" is viewed as complete evil is hilarious to me. I listened to it at 5 years old and wasn't corrupted
If anything it advocates for personal freedom.
@@lucky_ramen9803 exactly!
Oh, I'd love that such music genre as Porn Rock be true.
There's always Porngrind if you are curious.
Which is a thing Ariel Pink would gladly be on the frontline
I never thought of Dee Snider as a like-minded ally before.
We need a movie on this story called as "Rockstars vs Karens"
I'm against censorship, but I'm for content rating systems, like the ESRB.
(Even if such sytems are inperfect, misused by Karens, and probly ought to be overhauled.)
ALMOST HEAVEN

For the children!
Im surprised this hasn't been demonetized yet.
How is there not more likes this video is amazing
With the recent FTC crisis, I think this video is more relevant than ever. UA-camrs should try to speak out against the FTC.
Rest in peace John Denver and Frank Zappa.

Will you do or have done one on the importance of religious freedom illustrated by film?
As I’ve heard others say, Dee Snider DEFINITELY outclassed Congress, the wives & that entire silly committee! When Dee basically said Tipper Gore had a dirty mind was AMAZING!!! 🤣😅 All Al Gore could say was, “yeah.” It was magical!
This is a really well produced and fascinating video, I'm surprised you don't have more views. I'm not in favour of censoring anything other than "hate speech", as in language which explicitly endorses/incites violence against another group of people.
pixel girl I'd love more views on UA-cam for this, too!
Fortunately, it's also available on Facebook: facebook.com/feeonline/video_grid/?playlist_id=1761798164133203
Well, between this video and the one about musicians and racial barriers, you've at least earnt a new subscriber 😁
But who decides what hate speech is? Me, you, or some douche in office?
This is why coercive governments must be overthrown and replaced with voluntary institutions or abolished altogether
"Flash forward to the 1980's when a group of well connected busy bodies... I mean fine upstanding ladies."
I see what you did there.
I dont know if you will read this but amish paradise came out in 96.
Right on, brother
The actors change but the reasons for their thirst for power and control and censorship never does.
At 0:52, look it's Mrs. Doubtfire/Robin Williams!
I remember watching this on TV... Frank Zappa was no surprise, he was a supreme brainiac, but Dee Sneider .. He wants to rock, and he did! ..
I remember laughing at Al Gore's befuddlement. I picked John Denver because he was more like the witness for the prosecution and turned out to be the underdog for the defense that shined a gallant hero... If that makes sense...
One of the first LPs I bought as a high schooler was Zappa and the Mothers's "Burnt Weenie Sandwich," which sounded like Stravinsky Meets Miles Davis--totally where I lived! He got it exactly right!
Filthy Fifteen sounds like a great bandname
It gives me hope when top down policies ultimately backfires if it's not in accordance with the general intent of the population and reality itself.
