The Shoveller (William H. Macy) and the team terrorize Casanova's (Geoffrey Rush) car and his crew.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Can seven not-so-superheroes save a city of the future? Based on the comic book series created by Bob Burden, Mystery Men is set in the teeming metropolis of Champion City, where noble superhero Captain Amazing (Greg Kinnear) keeps the peace and sees that justice is done. When Captain Amazing mysteriously disappears, his archenemy Casanova Frankenstein (Geoffrey Rush) sees his opportunity to seize power and bend the city to his evil will, with his associate Dr. Annabel Leek (Lena Olin) at his side. However, Casanova will not succeed without a fight, as the The Mystery Men leap into action. The Mystery Men are not your ordinary Men of Steel; in fact, they're barely superheroes at all. Mr. Furious (Ben Stiller) has one gift: throwing tantrums. Blue Raja (Hank Azaria) is a deadly hand with spoons and forks (but not knives). Shoveler (William H. Macy) can dig with superior speed and force. The Bowler (Janeane Garafalo) rolls the ball with superhuman precision. Spleen (Paul Reubens) has a gaseous problem that he's turned into a weapon against evildoers. Invisible Boy (Kel Mitchell) is convinced he can become invisible at will, but he hasn't actually done it yet. And The Sphinx (Wes Studi) does have an unusual power: he can cut metal objects with his mind. Aided by addled gadget master Dr. Heller (Tom Waits), the Mystery Men make their move against Casanova and Annabel, who feel just threatened enough to make things personal by kidnapping Mr. Furious' girlfriend Monica (Claire Forlani). Mystery Men marked the feature directorial debut of Kinka Usher, who previously directed such ads as the Taco Bell talking chihuahua and the Dairy Association's "Got Milk?"

*Damn, I grew up loving this film. A sequel would be great now with all the Hero movies coming out. This could parody them but still have some sense in the long run. It'd be hilarious if they were old as hell but still tried to be heroes that don't really do sh#t but get in the way. I'd pay good money.*
It'll never happen. Sadly mystery men flopped at the box office when it came out. Nobody saw it back then. And unlike wizard of Oz and others that flopped in theaters but gained a strong cult following over the years, mystery men hasn't gained that many fans since apart from a niche few.
Also given with how parodies are now, would you really trust Hollywood to do a sequel any justice? I wouldn't. Parodies in Hollywood these days have become nothing more than random jokes and sketches with little to no story when it comes to movies these days so it's probably for the best. Besides mystery men is an underrated classic imo so it's probably for the best.
Political correctness would ruin it.

It's got its good and clever moments, but it has its flaws, namely the Spleen. I can't stand fart jokes. Honestly, I watch it more for Geoffrey Rush's performance than anything else. The other stuff is, for the most part, just okay.

+mazzak I got the message loud and clear when I watched this movie...these guys are not superheroes..just desperate wannabes. When you think of Superhero groups you think of The Avengers or The X-Men..these are the last guys you think of. These clowns aren't even good enough to be The Superfriends. The Shoveler said it best..they are the other guys, the guys nobody bets on. But with Champion City in peril and Captain Amazing kidnapped by Cassanova Frankenstein...they are the last hope to save the city from the hands of evil. And in the end..they really did become Superheroes.
I was 8 years old in 1999 good times good life very peaceful and great childhood life was better back then crazy now in 2017.

I remember watching this as a kid and Ben Stiller's epic rage power up followed by him pathetically thrashing around on the car doing absolutely no damage at all was the funniest bit of the whole film 😂

I like these superheroes. They don't have super broken powers or they're Superman, they don't really have any super powers. But they're brave, they don't wear a mask, and they know they're getting into trouble just by wanting to do the right thing.
