  • Thomas Edison invented the phonograph in 1877. Over a decade later, Edison utilized phonograph technology to create his Talking Doll. Manufactured from 1888 to 1890, Edison Talking Dolls played back nursery rhymes such as Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and Little Jack Horner.

    Little Jack Horner
    Sat in a corner
    Eating a Christmas pie
    He put in his thumb
    And pulled out a plum
And said “What a good boy am I!”

Thank you for adding the subtitles. It’s very hard to hear what these dolls are saying.

She was. It was the only way to make the sound audible on the equipment. Plus, it was before mass production, so they had to make each cylinder for each doll individually, over and over and over again.

The voice actor had to yell into the cylinders. They didn't have microphones

@Richard Beman What about Topsy the elephant he electrocuted at Luna Park zoo on Coney Island in 1903?
Which Edison filmed as part of the string of animal murders that he committed during a fued with Tesla while trying to prove alternating current unsafe.
I saw that video years ago, it was so horrific that I couldn't even finish watching it.
