I love Dennis deYoung. Beautiful voice. I was fortunate and saw Styx twice in 80's. The very best on your new album. Julian Lennon with you was very enjoyable too.
I learned a lot from Styx lyrics: who Tiresias was (Castle Walls), who Eldridge Cleaver was (Half Penny, Two Penny), a bit about Ted Kennedy (Eddie), a bit about the Great Society (Borrowed Time), and of course "Domo Arigato." Durian Durian no. It won’t. JY and Tommy Shaw legitimately hate DDY. They fired him, if I recall correctly. Not to mention everything going on with COVID-19. A Styx reunion isn’t happening anytime soon. Forget about it.
@@adriantomlin2902 maybe they want to avoid a war involving Gowan in the mix as well. And they do love Gowan. Dennis has been the great voice of Styx and it's a shame that circumstances led to his dismissal. David Lee Roth reunited with VH at one point so hey you never know but I'd be surprised
I think they should do one big arena show with Dennis because of the fans. Give Lawrence the night off and bring in Chuck if he is up to up. Styx sounds great now but they don't quite have the same sound as the original. I know that JY and Tommy literally hate Dennis despite all he has done for the band, but I keep saying that it is for the fans, so I think Tommy and JY are being selfish. My opinion only. But just think, how big this concert would be. It would be virtually impossible to get tickets but it would be the concert of the century. They could turn it into a live streaming show. I would also like to see Tommy, JY and Dennis in a room together with an MC to get everything off their chest. Not would never happen because Dennis is a more logical thinker. The one question I would like to ask Tommy and JY is why all of a sudden are you playing Roboto when you trashed it when it came out. Button line is the fans always loved it. Although The Current Styx sounds good, I feel that Dennis' band sounds better in my opinion. I think mostly all Styx songs sound better with the original lineup. In my opinion, I think JY and Tommy are jealous of Dennis because of his genius and quirky personality. I can't believe that mostly all bands with creative differences got back together but Styx won't. Keep in mind that the true fans want to see a reunion, and JY said that we need to give the people what they want.
Chris, man you've been knocking it out of the park with your guests on UA-cam since this Covid shit hit. I was into Styx as a kid big-time too. Dennis' voice still holds up great 👍
Domo Arigato will be remembered, but music from The Paradise Theater, The Grand Illusion, and Pieces of Eight will be remembered much more as being durable and timeless. I wish Tommy and JY would allow Dennis to join them for one final tour. They were my first rock album and my first concert with The Paradise Theater Tour.
I agree that those 3 albums are the best ever. I saw them on the Paradise Theater tour back in the day and it's possibly the most amazing Styx concert I've ever seen yet, and I've seen them often. Kickass every time
I totally agree those albums are better (though I think Suite Madame Blue from Equinox is as good as anything on those albums), but I agree with Dennis that Mr. Roboto is the song that will be most famous and most well know. Styx fans will like others more. The average person who doesn't know who Styx is will know Mr. Roboto.
Chris you are awesome for one, having him on your show and two... asking him the question everybody has had on their mind forever. Why? I know there’s been speculation and the other side of the band has said stuff but I never heard Dennis talk about it. Thank you so much. I saw them on their last tour together and I actually saw Panozzo last night before he died at Hersheypark Stadium. It was an incredible show and I’m glad I went, because that was their last tour together as a total band in like ‘97.
John Panozzo's last performance with Styx was in 1991. He sat out the 1995 rerecording of Lady as well as the subsequent tour during Summer '96. He would have rejoined the band during the tour if he had become well enough, but passed away half way through tour before he could play with them again.
Daniel Garza Hey, thank you for informing me of this. I could’ve swore he was there that night but maybe I just heard the other Panozzo’s name and thought it was him. Wow, shame. I was truly under the impression that I had seen the entirety of the band together for the last time now I’m sad that I never got to see the original van in its entirety. I never got a chance to see them in the 70s or 80s. Wish I had. Well, regardless, at least I got to see them with Dennis. That will probably never happen again unless they do something really soon. They all still sound phenomenal.
I would love to see the original lineup, unfortunately John Panazo,is no longer with us, God rest his soul, Styx is one of my favorite bands from the 70s/80s. I'm from Illinois ,and Styx being from Chicago, I've caught alot of there shows
Tommy shaw was brought onboard, and he is a great guitarist and lyricist. Dennis DeYoung and Chuck and John Panozzo were the founding members. JY was solicited for his harder edge and the band was complete. Tommy Shaw didn't enter the picture until 75. So how he and JY end up with the rights to the name STYX and essentially kicked dennis out is beyond me.
That makes no sense to me either. The other thing is that when other people had health issues, or when Tommy quit and came back, there was no problem. Dennis has a health issue and all of a sudden he's out of the band. Insane!
Fun Facts. Styx had 23 songs that cracked the Billboard Top 100. They had one Number 1 song, Babe, written and lead vocals by Dennis DeYoung. They had eight Top 10 songs, of which 7 were written and lead vocals by Dennis DeYoung. The one exception was Too Much Time on My Hands written and lead vocals by Tommy Shaw. Of the 23 Top 100 songs, Dennis DeYoung wrote 16 of them (2 of those co-written with James Young) and did lead vocals for 15 of those (James Young sang on the Dennis penned You Need Love which charted at #88), Tommy Shaw wrote and did lead vocals on 6, and Glen Burtnik wrote and did lead vocals on 1. Despite Dennis DeYoung being kicked out of Styx over 20 years ago, the last 3 hit songs by Styx were when Tommy Shaw was NOT in the band. Styx last three Hits were from 1990's Edge of the Century which was recorded after Tommy Shaw quit the band and were the Dennis DeYoung songs Show Me the Way (charted at #3) and Love at First Sight (charted at #25) and Glenn Burtnik's Love is the Ritual (charted at #80). Glenn Burtnik actually has had a hit song with Styx more recently than Tommy Shaw. Tommy's last hit song with Styx was 1981's Too Much Time on My Hands. It is absolutely amazing that Dennis DeYoung is being kept out of Styx because of Tommy Shaw and James Young. Without Dennis, Styx would have never been anywhere near the success they were and they likely would have been long forgotten. They wouldn't be able to do a concert in a venue larger than a local club. Of course, hit songs aren't everything. Styx had some amazing songs that never charted. The ones that come to mind for me are Suite Madame Blue (Dennis), The Grand Illusion (Dennis), Castle Walls (Dennis), Pieces of Eight (Dennis), Miss America (JY), Man in the Wilderness (Tommy), Crystal Ball (Tommy), Lords of the Ring (Dennis wrote, JY lead vocals), Queen of Spades (Dennis and JY wrote, Dennis lead vocals). Those are just my favorites and are subjective, but even on those, Dennis did the vast majority of them. Dennis is Styx FAR more than anyone else is Styx. I don't even see how that is debatable. Tommy Shaw may be a great talent, but he didn't contribute to Styx anywhere near what Dennis DeYoung did. Tommy Shaw and James Young are complete a-holes for not doing one last reunion tour with Dennis DeYoung.
I had wanted for years to see Dennis back in STYX for a show, but honestly, to me, the BEST STYX music has been Dennis' albums since leaving the band. Tommy is AMAZING, and again, my opinion is that he is a good guy and is keeping STYX going for everyone else. They haven't had a hit since Dennis left. I doubt we will ever see a reunion, and that's Okay. Sadly, the new STYX songs are underwhelming. I'm hoping the songs on the upcoming release feature Tommy, because those will be the BEST!! Dennis' new album is incredible.
I've seen Styx several times, Kilroy tour 1983 Return to Paradise tour mid 90's And I've seen the DDY band, very good, I like August Zadra because I went to school with him in AK. I would love to see a reunion tour with original ppl. It would be awesome!
The reason Dennis is no longer in Styx is pretty straightforward. Money. Tommy and JY like money. They want to tour, tour, tour. Dennis wanted to do 70-90 dates. They want 150 dates plus per year. All the other reasons given by Tommy and JY? Bullshit.
I have seen Styx a few times, but always with Dennis. I will not support the Tommy Shaw Styx given how they have treated Dennis. I will go see the Music of Styx tour Dennis does if it comes near my location. I will see Styx if a reunion tour happens, but I doubt it will because of Tommy and James Young.
I don't understand why people dislike Styx. Some people talk like they're the Nickleback of the 80s. Maybe I'm too young; can someone who was around at the time explain? I've always liked them.
The press were hard on Styx back in the day, branding them arena rock..(aka) I believe as corporate rock. Hope that helps....I love them, especially with Dennis.
Musical taste is subjective but how can anyone hate Styx ?! C'mon ! Crystal Ball, Grand Illusion, Pieces Of Eight, Paradise Theater. Even their latest with Gowan, The Mission is a solid effort. And their concerts were brilliant, what more can you ask ? Lol
@@mikeanthony2779 i never paid attention to what the press liked or disliked lol. After all, they hated Rush and Zeppelin with a vengeance back in the day. Ridiculous. They fricken raved about Springsteen who's ho-hum boring as hell American rock at best but hate Styx who were more musically exciting and adventurous? What a joke. Obviously they never really saw them live in concert where every great rock band shines
Despite what Dennis says here... Babe and Mr. Roboto alienated a lot of their rock fan base, and those are their 2 biggest hits... a lot of people who say they don't like them are only thinking of those 2 songs and completely forgetting all their great songs. It's like saying, "Yes ...that Owner of Lonely Heart band...? Yeah...don't like 'em"
@@paulvillarreal1588 I will admit that Mr. Roboto is very different (though I like it), but how can anyone dislike the band because of Babe. A rock band isn't allowed to do a Ballad? I love Dream Theater, but they have done a few ballads that are very different than their other songs, and I love them. Even if I didn't love them, it wouldn't make me think less of them because they did a ballad.
Come Sail Away Renegade Too much time on my hands Snowblind Blue Collar Man Grand Illusion Sing for the Day Nothing ever goes as planned A few more...they'll always be classics to me.
The concept of a final reunion tour sounds great and everything, but they just can’t get along, and Dennis knows that. I’m not saying it’s all his fault. I’m not saying it’s all JY & Tommy’s fault, either. I’m just saying it isn’t realistic anymore. They’ve tried this more than once, and it has always ended up eventually going bust. They just can’t peacefully coexist.
@@adriantomlin2902 exactly. The reality is that their both making great music as things are, so why would anyone want to get together just to be miserable.
They could get back together to do one more tour. The Return to Paradise tour was awesome. The Grand Illusion Tour was awesome. Dennis is no longer even trying to get back into Styx. He just wants to do one last tour as Styx.
I am not a fan of Styx nor Dennis DeYoung but I am glad that he can still perform without Tommy Shaw and them. BTW, I can't wait until Jericho interviews Bruce Dickenson or Rob Halford or someone like that.
The greatest rock singers of all-time: 1) Freddie Mercury (Queen) 2) Steve Perry (Journey) 3) Steve Walsh (Kansas) 4) Dennis DeYoung (Styx) 5) Everybody else....
Dennis is right, we the fans deserve to hear Styx together one last time. Guys, set your egos aside and let's make it happen. Besides look at all the money you'd make.
Saw Styx last month open their new 2022 tour. Absolutely killed it. Lawrence Gowan is crazy talented and the band is great as ever. They don't need Dennis for anything. Accept the fact he's not coming back.
GEN X here, 1965! Hey current STYX band members....we know you hate theatrics.Tommy & JY, please for the fans....get back with Dennis and do a final tour....WE WANNA ROCK!
I saw Styx a couple weeks ago and I love Gowan a lot I think he's a great addition but I would love to see a DDY reunion before we all implode in this crazy world.
I can say that I saw that concert , albeit after it was originally postponed due to Tommy breaking his foot? Ankle? GREAT Concert but even then, I heard Tommy and JY weren't happy with it or Dennis. SO, Dennis, dont waste your time on that one special reunion tour. YOU dont need it. YOUR STYX fans follow YOU!
Yeah to bad, there's no way that Styx is getting back together with Dennis for one more time! James Young is adamant about having nothing to do with Dennis after he sued Styx. Listen to J.Y. and man there's alot of hate there!
Daniel Garza I saw Styx live when they performed in Peoria Illinois in 1974. They performed songs from The Serpent is Rising. This current lineup is not really Styx. DDY has wanted to do a reunion tour. JY snubs the fans w his pouting. For me, Styx stopped being Styx when the leader and songwriter was fired. DDY is a genius. This current act is just making money off the band name.
They played Dennis' songs in concert, did not give him any of the royalty money, and then get pissed at him when he sues. What does that tell you about Tommy and JY?
Denny is about consistency. Interview after interview, he's been very consistent. However, I think the REAL reason why Styx doesn't want to give him one last victory lap is because they don't want to be put in a position where they have to turn to Larry Gowan and say, "Sorry, pal! You gotta sit this one out," because Ricky Phillips and Todd Sucherman aren't going anywhere. You need a drummer and a bassist. Poor Larry's the 5th wheel despite the fact the he himself is slowly coming up on having been a member of Styx longer than Denny has. And even if Denny were to approach Styx and say, "Nobody goes home! Nobody sits this reunion out!", they're worried about the aftershock. What if they're thinking, "What the fuck do we do if can't recover after bringing Denny back for one final tour?!?" Remember when Steve Perry said at Journey's HOF induction, "Arnell Pineda sings his ass off"?!? That's the kind of passing-of-the-touch Denny would have to give to Gowan -- i.e. something that DLR never gave Sammy Hagar, something that Steve Walsh never gave to either John Elefante nor Ronnie Platt ... and it carries WEIGHT! It carries LEGITIMACY! Can Denny -- who has been adamant since 1997 that Styx in his eyes are the magic maker song-writers + Chuck & Todd -- swallow enough pride required to give weight and legitimacy to Gowan and Phillips?!?
Larry Gowan doesn't have to be let go! Dennis does not want to do 150 shows a year! And he wants to do just 1 more tour, and stay closer to home, Larry can fill in the rest of the shows tour and back again! He does not have to go any where! It's just an excuse filled with nothing but b.s! Grow a set and just do it Shaw & Young!
Denny is on record over and over over again stating "Styx is me, Tommy, JY, Chuck, and Todd ever since John's passing." Chuck can't do 150 shows a year anymore than Denny can. So I don't think it really about band members past and present or the grind that touring has. I think this break up / dust up has everything to do with how the economics work in the music industry that the public was kept in the dark about: without a contract from a major label, nobody has medical insurance and nobody has per-diems for daily living. It's THE major reasons why band don't want to get dropped by their labels because without it, they're on the hook for medically insuring themselves and their road crew from touring revenue and merch sales. Dennis & A&M have a history of butting heads, which caused periods of hiatus that greatly affected the lives (and earnings) of a lot more people involved than just the other band members. Styx is currently signed with New Door/UME and conducts all their business through their corporate name Gelderdisc. If UME ever told Gelderdisc in any form words to the effect of, "If you reunite with Denny, we'll drop you because we're not having an A&M rerun," then there's no reason to even bring the matter up for a vote except as a formality. Denny will be outvoted. Without question.
@@James-ko3gw They thought Killroy would be a flop and got butt hurt that it wasn't. Also, they didn't think Dennis was hard rock enough. They didn't like his softer songs. And... he was theatrical. Im sure those were the main points. With all that said... Styx is nothing without Dennis.
I have to get this of my musical chest. Dennis, wrote 90% of the hits and was the main sound of Styx, period! Shaw has no class for what he's saying about Dennis, from my experience in bands, I believe its envy and jealousy. Dennis in my eyes is an icon, amazing singer/songwriter, and a one off.
Was it just a coincidence that a dentures ad preceded this? Ha! Jus messin. I've said it before and I'll say it again, ie, Dennis Deyoung IS Styx. Period.
Y2J, I'm your biggest fan. Would it be possible to do some AEW segments related to the George Floyd protests, and the rest of the havoc happening. Maybe like a funny segment with the wrestlers fighting police officers, of course you should let viewers know before hand that you should never ever assault a police officer.
I agree with Dennis that "Mr. Roboto" will always be their most famous song. And I also understand why he's not happy about that. "Mr. Roboto" will be their most famous because it's been used so often in comedy shows, movies and funny commercials as a reference to cheesy songs from the past. Basically, it's a very famous punchline.
I’m a DDY fan...and I think he is awesome with his new band. August Zadra is an amazing lead guitarist. I think Styx “singing the songs of DDY” is sad and should never have happened. It’s kind of humorous if you watch VH1 Behind the Music...Styx. It goes something like this… “Dennis writes a song. Band members complain about the song. Song shoots to the top of the charts. Rinse and repeat.” Dennis is better off without them.
Everybody knows its tommy shaw who doesnt want him back , Tommy was jealous of dennis song writing ability ....Now Tommy thinks its his band .....it sad . and im from chicago and crew up on styx since the 70's.
chris jericho bro,i loved dennis de young better than tommy shaw..better vocals,of all my favorate metal bands is because of great vocalist, geoff tate, rob halford and my most favorate...bruce dickinson,im a metal fan until i die...good luck with your fozzy tour bro
I have to 100% agree. I've always found him insufferable. He can't even do a simple interview without sounding like a cheesy, blowhard doing stand-up comedy. I just cringe when he speaks.
He seriously needs to stop begging for a reunion tour. These interviews asking questions about a reunion tour only beat the same dead horse over and over, because we already know the answers to the questions. A reunion with Dennis... IS... NOT... GOING... TO... HAPPEN! Besides, Styx doesn't need him. They haven't needed him for 21 years.
MisterNinetySeven It only comes up because people keeping asking him when there’s going to be a reunion. If nobody was asking, it wouldn’t come up in interviews.
Amazes me that they call themselves Styx when DDY wrote 2/3 of their material. No disrespect to Tommy Shaw but he is the Grand Delusion of the legacy of Styx.
But my point is, people who keep asking need to get it through their thick skulls that a reunion is not happening. And it doesn't matter how many Styx hits you wrote if you stop being a team player. Dennis was a team player in the 70s and 80s. But then he changed. Now he's better as a solo artist than as a Styxian. That's why he isn't in Styx anymore.
@@misterninetyseven2898 Artistic differences and health issues but why continue to use the NAME Styx if you are trying to differentiate yourself? The MIssion is a good release and so is the New DDY release 26 East Volume 1. And the first glimpse of Vol. 2 "The Isle of Misanthrope" is Killer. This is not a Steve Perry issue, both Camps have been successful in their own right. When the Rock Hall comes they will share the stage, and ultimately Tommy needs to grow up. EVH is no longer with us and had cancer not taken him there WAS going to be a tour With Roth and Hagar. Life is TOO short.
Dennis....one of the best leads of all time. He and Steve Perry, the best.
Absolutely on both counts!
Steve's voice got strained for a bit and can understand that playing into a factor of him getting out of Journey

Kilroy tour 1983
Return to Paradise tour mid 90's
And I've seen the DDY band, very good, I like August Zadra because I went to school with him in AK.
Bullshit.
Yeah. Those two are greed
Heard it hon! Loved it 💜
I've been Styx twice in concert. Both times unfortunately without Dennis.
Dennis is awesome
Yeah Mr Roboto is one of the best songs of 80s. The song is too good.
The song is horrible and the album was worse.
@@gamjammer ok
Come Sail Away
Renegade
Too much time on my hands
Snowblind
Blue Collar Man
Grand Illusion
Sing for the Day
Nothing ever goes as planned
A few more...they'll always be classics to me.
It's just like a marriage it take all parties involved make the whole thing work. Give and take and compromise! It isn't just one person to blame.
Iron Maiden and Judas Priest the best 🤘
The greatest rock singers of all-time:
1) Freddie Mercury (Queen)
2) Steve Perry (Journey)
3) Steve Walsh (Kansas)
4) Dennis DeYoung (Styx)
5) Everybody else....
Dennis Deyoung will always be the face of STYX.
Tommy was "snowblind" during 1983. He got into it while dating Linda Blair who was introduced to it through Rick James
Break the Walls Down, thanks Chris for remembering the Driving Force of Styx!!
Great upload Chris a little of the bubbly.
He cut his hand up trying to get into his own house through a window.
Tommy is making a fool of himself
Yeah to bad, there's no way that Styx is getting back together with Dennis for one more time! James Young is adamant about having nothing to do with Dennis after he sued Styx. Listen to J.Y. and man there's alot of hate there!
James Young is taking the low road. I’m not impressed w him at all
@@randyl3752 JY and Styx's manager Charlie Brusco. CB's nothing but a money hungry pimp.
I'd definitely go to see Styx if Dennis were still in the band. LOVE Tommy and JY but Styx is not Styx without Dennis.
From 1977-1981, very few bands could match what Styx was doing.
I love the Fozzy band also,✨
Denny is about consistency. What if they're thinking, "What the fuck do we do if can't recover after bringing Denny back for one final tour?!?"
Remember when Steve Perry said at Journey's HOF induction, "Arnell Pineda sings his ass off"?!?
I would pay literally whatever they wanted to see one more Styx tour with Dennis.
Good point. But I don't think it will happen because Tommy and JY literally hates Dennis for what ever reason.
@@smittygee003 great point
A reunion will never happen. That possibility is totalled beyond repair.
I was 17 years old when mr roboto came out
They need to hire back Dennis de Young without him, you don’t have diddley squat you need to bring him back that will make the complete band of Styx
I don't care if He ever gets back with Styx I like Him better solo He doesn't need to do a tour, they tommy and james young doesn't like Him.
I agree😁
I agree as well. Like I said in my comment, I like Dennis with his new band. Tommy and James can go to… well, you know...
Man, a Styx reunion would be fantastic.
Period.
Dennis has a gr8 voice but STYX rocks more with Tommy
Wow.
I think he made a subtle comment about drugs and Tommy.
chris love ya bro, best of luck with AEW
Dennis: "me, me, me, me, I, I, I...."
Chris Jericho likes Styx?
I saw Styx last month and they were AMAZING!!!!!
Is it just me and no disrespect to him but does Dennis DeYoung sound like Casey Kasem in this interview ?
Dennis was a big Jack LOAD always
*"Moe, Larry, & Curly"* ...---haha, nice...too bad they ain't gonna get back together...
If you think this than you definitely are not a Styx fan.
Dennis DeYoung being replaced in Styx was evil. Shame on Tommy and JY!
This guys wig is almost nice as jerichos wig.
You know who was Styx' best songwriter? Glen Burtnik.
Styx is one of bands, where all members are talented musicians and singers. No wonder they couldn't stand Mr. Roboto.
Mr Roboto sucked..It was the downfall of one of the greatest groups ever.
When you listen to DeYoung’s solo music, vs new Styx, you realize the Tommy is the real talent in the band.
Dennis' music was definitely more commercially successful. I personally think Dennis and Tommy are equally talented. I think they are both great.
First comment?
I simply dont like anything about Dennis .
