- Fast Money round and closing from Ray Combs' last appearance on Family Feud. Watch closely after Ray says goodbye at the end - he darts out of the studio and leaves the winning family alone for the closing credits.
I love how the crowd laughed at him saying his piece at the end of his final episode. They thought he was kidding, he was most likely crying out for help.
wow Ray quickly left the stage on this episode! He couldn't wait to get outta there! When my family and I were on the show in 1992 he stuck around and hung out with us on stage for all three episodes we were on
that was the last episode he was in. He was told that he was going to be let go and that's when Richard Dawson would come back because of the very low ratings. It was a shame; Ray Combs was great. Loved it when a family would score 200 points in the fast money round on the first shot. Look it up; he always played a trick on the second family member and he did it masterfully. Richard Dawson was my absolute favorite but Ray Combs was great. Sad ending for him.
90% Vegan he was heartbroken I imagine
90% Vegan What was it like being on the show? Had to be a blast with Ray hosting!
that's cool! my family never missed an episode, bet a 7 yr old little me watched you. Remember when he did some stuff with the WWF too, hosted a ppv for them or something. Wow, diff world then..
did you win?
I suffer from depression too. He always seemed like such a good person. Nobody should go out like that, but I understand the feeling. RIP Ray.
"Thought I was a loser until you walked up here & you made me feel like a man." He was really baggin' on the last contestant. Could definetly tell that he was bitter.
I am surprised that he lasted that long. He was disgusting with the women. Even though he did not kiss them like Dawson, which I thought was disgusting too; He put disgusting on a whole new level. Talking about sex drives and groping these women all the time and kissing them wherever.
@@misplacednewyawker it was also normal back then
@@misplacednewyawker lmao
He was baggin on himself
I feel so bad for how things ended for ray. I thought he was so funny . I don't blame him for leaving like that either
Kristin Min wanted him to host Family Feud or even other game shows, and I felt so bad for this guy :(
How are you doing.
I grew up watching Ray Comb on Family Feud. So sorry this happened to him.
@@inspiredtoimpactministries2854 The last Money Run also the rare Money Run that a contestant score 5x 0 point
Why did he leave
The word is Ray Combs was so angry that not only did he refuse to stay on the stage with the family, but he went to his dressing room, changed, and then went straight to his car and drove off without saying a single word to anyone.
Yeah he was hurt about being fired.
KOHF34 Yep, that is true.
If you know all that, what was he mad about in the first place?
I heard that story about the dad from Alf.
Why would he even change? He’s wearing normal clothes.
"i thought I was a loser until you walked up here" Shakes his hand, kisses his head and says "I think its fine hell of a way to go out"......Kinds chilling and sad that he knew he was dropped like a bad habit, didn't deserve that
ray proved even on his last day what a great host he was...he was all about letting the families have fun.....rip ray....
RIP Ray Combs! Spent my childhood watching you! My favorite game show host ever! Literally found out 2 days ago that he passed away in 1996 and was shocked and sad to find out.
How could you figuratively find out 2 days ago? It obviously is literal, using literally is redundant here.
@@dickjones4912well it's been more than 2 days now lol
It's such a shame Ray's no longer with us... he was such a fine entertainer.
He was. If he held on, I bet he would’ve been the first pick to host Family Feud when in came back in 99, above Louie Anderson. Ray would’ve been the ideal replacement for Jay Leno when he retired/resigned from The Tonight Show.
@@ABCEasyas-- personally i think he should have hosted the 1994-1995 version of price is right. i think he would have done better than davidson did. especially because i think doug davidson sounded a lot like ray combs when he hosted
It's sad this guy killed himself. I wish he had gotten an offer for another show because he was a good host.
Well he did Family Challenge after this.
Michael Marriott nah he got fuckin merked after
Da Truth I miss him hosting Family Feud and he was one of the best host of game shows and also trebek, Dawson.
A number of bad things happened to Ray Combs: The "Family Feud" hosting job was taken away from him (and given back to Richard Dawson, who mumbled so much during the 1994-1995 season that nobody could ever understand a word that he was saying); Ray's successive game show "Family Challenge" was cancelled after only one year; Ray was seriously hurt in a car accident; his wife divorced him. These things-combined-led Ray to ATTEMPT suicide by hanging at his home and to SUCCESSFULLY do so after being involuntarily committed to a mental institution. Sad.
@@jimhanold9026 so much depression of His personal problems
I think Ray would have been the perfect successor to Bob Barker as host of Price is Right, without a doubt.
Maybe if he were still alive.
even though he is up in age tom kennedy would've been my choice
I never made that connection before, but you are absolutely right! I can picture him now joking with the contestants. He would have been a natural at it!
I was just thinking that!
I would so agree about that
Keep in mind, this is Jonathan Goodson who did this. Mark Goodson unfortunately died in 1992 and Mark loved Ray Combs.
Mark Goodson would never do this.
@@amycollins2429and Mark Goodson hated Richard Dawson and became Ray Combs Successor again with low ratings himself because he spoke very soft.
The Producers treated him like a piece of garbage I don't blame him for just walking out the way he did. Karma got them later
Twaddles McGee: What "karma" was there?
@Twaddles McGee How did karma get them? 🙄
@@JDCUSA Well, lightning didn't strike twice as bringing back an older, less touchy Richard Dawson didn't bring the show back up in the ratings. The show was cancelled following a disastrous season.
And now we have Steve Harvey 😒
@Easonitus Yeah sadly Dawson couldn’t save the Feud.
As someone who has unceremoniously been fired from a broadcasting job for reasons I didn't understand then and still don't these many years later, I completely understand how Ray must have felt. I probably would have walked out just like he did.
He was nearly paralyzed in a crash days after he taped his final Feud episode. He also owned comedy clubs near his hometown in Ohio and the debts rised and Ray was unable to pay off his debts. Plus, coupled that w/ the fact that he was fired from his other show in "The Family Challenge" and the simultaneous divorce from his wife was enough to send Ray into a frenzy.
megamanj2004X he left Family Challenge. He wasn’t fired.
And even though Ray filed for divorce for a while shortly before his death they reconcile
@@jonathanfleming5831 From then, the show rating decline until Steve Harvey become host in 2010
He really seemed like he was a good man, he just had a lot going on. He deserved much better. My mom ended up in the psych ward twice because of a major nervous breakdown, so a lot of recounts of the things that Ray did towards the end bring back memories of that.
With that said, I really think that Ray was as good of a host as Dawson was during his first run (he was nowhere near as good when they bought him back). Ray was just so full of energy and always fun to watch.
18 years ago today, Ray Combs died.
RIP Ray Combs, died so young. 1956-1996.
Monday June 2, 2014
Would be nice if the guy who got no points showed up here to comment.
I miss Ray Combs
At about 4:00 a couple of the family members seem to turn and wave to Ray, and then seem to be wondering why he's left the stage.
townhall05446 was this when he killed himself
@@danielmihajlica Two years later.
They probably knew this was his last day
You see the family look at Ray's walkout in bewilderment.
It didn't help that one of those producers was Mark's own son, Jonathon. Once Mark Goodson died in 1992, Jonathon made a mess of everything, like adding the Bullseye round and expanding the show to 1 hour. They played two games each episode, and the majority of stations only showed the second half. Of course, CBS cancelled the daytime version and bad decisions like this likely led to the demise of Mark Goodson Productions.
He was my favorite host. The industry is cut-throat.
As someone who used to be in it, I can tell you from first-hand experience that it most definitely is.
@@mrchopsticks3they did him so dirty it's not even funny. It seems to me he was made the scapegoat for the low ratings. That was just wrong. They should have blamed the format change on the game show.
You notice that he kissed the contestant on the head at the end, which is kind of a way to stick it to Goodson after Ray was told out of the blue that they were making a hosting change and going back to Dawson and Ray didn't take it well. You can kind of tell Ray was telling them to kiss off for lack of better terms there. After hearing his reason for dismissal and his subsequent death, him saying the stuff he said was likely him crying for help. You think about it, hosting that show was Ray's life and then all of a sudden it gets pulled out from underneath you. I just don't think he ever personally got over that.
He was a great host. I'm so sorry it ended the way it did for Ray.
Ray was very upset following his dismissal. After the show, he just changed and left the studio without even saying goodbye to anyone.
Glad to see he kept his sense of humor to the end. Rest in peace, Ray. You did a fine job.
Yes, he was a professional through the taping of the show, then left with just enough time to let the producers know that he was pissed. I guess we'll never know if the 0 points from that final contestant threw him over the edge but it did seem to trigger what would come later.
In retrospect, somebody on set should have realized that he wasn't right and had the potential to harm himself but that is a big leap to make. It's too bad because he was probably my favorite FF host, with Dawson and now Harvey right behind him. RIP indeed. Wish he was still with us.
I always liked the Ray Combs versions of FF.He could be hilarious at times.I used to fall over when he would put on the lady contestants heels if they were taller than him.
He used to stand on a chair on occasion as well, especially if there was a really tall contestant.
I was on the show with Ray Combs (we won five times, fast money twice) and he was a great, funny guy, exactly my age. It was sad the way they treated them and the way his problems piled up in his last days (financial, unemployment, wife leaving him due to cheating, his car accident). He was a genuinely funny guy who was not a good businessman. RIP, Ray!
So a guy who cheats on his wife (with 6 children) is a great guy to you huh?
AMEN to that we still love you Ray. My favorite Family Feud host.
Ray has left the building!
hamtrak Ray has left...
Yeah in a few months Richard Dawson returned to Family Feud for one season.
Notice how quickly Ray departs the set. He reportedly said good bye to noone and within two years he was in a bad car wreck and shortly thereafter committed suicide in a psychiatric ward, while on suicide watch. How that was possible I have no idea. So sad!
True..
Combination of bunch of things. But he didn't show it during this show.
We'll never know what haunts the souls of others till we hear it on the news. RIP Ray Combs
The definition of getting the hell out of Dodge.
3:50 That's hard to watch
The show wasn't cancelled. Only Ray was fired. On Dawson's Return the show looked like a brand new run but it's actually the continuation of the syndicated run from 1988 to 1995.
Mark Goodson would not have fired Ray! Too bad his son had taken over and made the decision to do so.
Exactly my point, Spencer. He died and his son took over and almost immediately fired Ray.
+Spencer Karter He passed away a few days before christmas of 1992
Because Richard Dawson let fame as host of The _Feud_ go to his head, Mark Goodson vowed that the only way he'd work for him again would be over his rancid corpse! Sure enough, this prophecy came true, as Goodson succumbed to pancreatic cancer in December 1992, and Dawson was indeed emceeing The _Feud_ courtesy of his son Jonathan, who unceremoniously gave Dawson's successor/predecessor, Ray Combs, the hook...
That was, without a doubt, the worst move in the history of the Feud. The blood is on Johnathan Goodson's hands, and he made his father spin in his grave.
RIP to Ray Combs and Mark Goodson, you two did NOT deserve to have your legacies tarnished like that...
+TBONE2004 Grow up. Couldn't manage his money, lost 2 comedy clubs due to mismanagement, wife filed for divorce...... Ray Combs was one of life's losers. Period.
Wasn't it Ray who made up that thing where if the first family member reached 200 points with his answers in the final round, he'd still bring out the second family member and make the audience laugh by asking #2 really funny fake survey questions like "Name the ugliest person you have ever seen"? Seems to me I don't remember Richard ever doing that, but I do remember Ray doing it.
Yes it was Ray that did that
Yeah it was Ray. When a family member got 200 points by herself and asked the second family member fake questions though he asked her "Who is the handsome host on Family Feud" and she said "You" lol I think that made him feel good.
He left the set like that because they fired him in a really shitty way, and his attitude was "fuck you, I'll finish out my last show and then I'm leaving". He went from the set right to his car and drove off.
Can you imagine that conversation? Supposed you're told that after six years at your job, you're being fired and the guy that you replaced is taking your job. Yeah, you'd be pretty PISSED off too.
Kris Kross Actually it was set, dressing room, and then he drove off.
Those two guys nearest him gave him a pat on the back and of course he’s like "Fuck you guys you let me go down like this!"
I read Pluto TV is launching a classic Family Feud channel. I hope this very show makes it (Ray's last Feud hasn't been rerun in over 25 years).
It’s hasn’t they’ve been showing mainly the 88-89 season.
I think Ray Combs got a raw deal when he got fired. Yes, he wasn’t perfect, but he did well as host of the Family Feud. I even liked when a person got 200 points or better by himself, Ray would pull a prank on the other person thinking that the person before got a very low score and would ask ridiculous questions before he revealed the score. Ray did a great job and it was a mistake to fire him. They thought that they did right in bringing back Richard Dawson, but the show lasted one season and he only showed that he was merely a has been. When Louie Anderson took over the hosting duties of Family Feud in 1999, he offered Richard Dawson an opportunity to come back and do a “changing of the guard.” Richard wasn’t interested and wanted nothing more to do with the show. To tell you the truth, I’m kinda surprised that Richard Dawson returned in 1994 after Ray Combs unceremonious departure.
He was fired? I thought he quit because he was dying.
Louie Anderson was terrible as the host of Feud. They shouldn’t have fired Combs. I thought he was good.
@@chuckgan no, he was fired. He hosted Family Challenge before he died. Sadly, he did it to himself.
The Fast Money thing was why Ray Combs was always my favorite Feud host.
Dawson returned because he had a child at the time and he was a stay at home dad
RIP brother....you were a great host and talent.
Ray combs at the end of the show with what I believe is to be the 1st mic drop! (Even if he didn't drop the mic) rip to a great host whom left us way too soon.
I think he actually took the mic with him
+Ryan Strnad I ment figuratively speaking not literally 😃
Yea. I know Dan Rather walked off the CBS News set one time, but that was off the air (Had to do with the network's US Tennis Open coverage preempting his newscast in '87). Ray, IMO was big when he first got started in his hometown in Ohio, then when he went to Hollywood, was still a rather large fish, but this time in an ocean. He also got into a car wreck, had marital problems, that combined with him being unable to find real TV or stand-up work contributed to his demise. I said on another post the other day, had it would've been right place, right time, he could have been Barker's successor on The Price is Right.
+Ryan Strnad all I know is that Ray was gone too soon, as far as him being bobs successor I am not sure Ray would be in his hid 60s at the time and they would replace Bob and Ray almost back to back, imo though Ray is the 2nd best host of feud, 1st Dawson 2nd combs, 3rd o Hurley 4th Harvey 5th Anderson 6th Karns, and LAST by far, roker!!!
I was expecting Bob to retire long before he was 83 years old. Probably when he was 73 to 75 so shooting by the hip, that would've been between the years 1997-2000. And I was already thinking this in the early 90's. So that's why I thought of him, Bob Eubanks and perhaps Peter Tomarken as possible successors. Then. both NBC and CBS pulled all their game shows except for CBS keeping Price and Barker just stuck around (No real problem there as Bob is my idle). My top 3 Feud hosts would be 1) Dawson 2) Combs 3) Richard Karn but you are right about Al Roker. He, himself is OVERRATED! Also, the best Feud announcers were/are 1) Gene Wood 2) Burton Richardson who I see is back calling the ABC Prime Time feud
The remaining families on stage looked around for Ray knowing that he just walked off and wasn't there, so they got together and blew a huge kiss at the audience on behalf of him I think.
3:48 Thank you Gene, for the Feud I'm Ray Combs see you next time.
Ray seemed always came across as real genuine nice guy, even in this little clip after he gives the last guy some well due ribbing he still goes back to connect with him at the end. Ray was way more relatable then Dawson and IMHO the best host 'the Feud' has ever had.
Ray Combs was a great host. They never should've let him go. Bringing Dawson back didn't help the show. So tragic what happened years later.
+MLD You speak the truth. Ray Combs was the perfect balance as a host. He was laid-back, passionate, witty, and friendly to the contestants. My favorite moments were those fast money pranks.
I didn't like either of them. Dawson was always creepy, and Combs was always wooden and campy. I like Richard Karn, but don't like him as host, either.
Ray was my fav host of the Feud! I was utterly shocked upon hearing the tragic news back in '96. Ray was so empathetic and compassionate with the guests on the show as seen when he went to hug that last contestant who didn't get anymore points. May Ray rest in peace and his family and friends find solace on earth. If feeling like hurting one's self: 1 800 S U I C I D E
Actually Ray walked off the set due to contract disputes and compromise issues with the producers. After he left Family Feud, he got into a serious accident and suffered brain trauma. The accident really screwed him up and he became really depressed. He was on many prescription drugs and had thoughts of suicide. He recovered physically, but he was never the same mentally.
I read he was fired because he couldn't get the ratings Richard Dawson did. You're definitely right about the wreck.
He didn't suffer brain trauma, he suffered damage to a spinal disc that caused him permanent pain. As someone with a spinal disc injury myself, I know how debilitating it can be.
Ray Combs would have been 59 years old in 2015 had he lived. So sorry to hear how he died in 1996. Too many bad things snowballed in his life all @ once. We miss you, Ray! R.I.P.. :'(
Just because Ray Combs committed suicide makes him a loser? He had a multitude of personal problems he was dealing with @ the time: recovering from an automobile accident, a failing marriage & the closing of two comedy clubs he owned due to bankruptcy. Ray had to sell his house in Hamilton, Ohio (his hometown) as a result of this. Some people can handle difficult situations like this, while others cannot. Poor Ray. It's too bad his life ended in such a tragedy. R.I.P., Ray Combs. :'(
+ChihuahuaboyDH You know what's even sadder? When he was hosting Family Challenge in 1995, you could tell something was wrong with him. He was overly excited onstage, but his facial expressions and body language was showing signs he was considering suicide. Hell, in one episode, he said "I feel like I'm gonna die." Sure, it was all in fun and meant to be funny, but deep down, you could tell he was suicidial.
It really makes me sad to know Ray had to end his life after all the hardships he went through. He's like the Freddie Mercury of game show hosts, a true legend who died too soon...
RIP Ray Combs. When it comes to the best host of the Feud... *BAM!!! NUMBER ONE ANSWER!!!*
+THE OFFICIAL TBONE2004 It's a shame that they don't ever show these episodes on GSN. It's as if he never hosted the Fued or that's the impression I get.
They are showing his Family Feud episodes on BUZZR, it shows old game shows. See if you get that channel, it comes on late at night after Match Game. ( I have Time Warner Cable TV aka Spectrum now).
walker1984 They now show them in the BZZR channel. It's great to see the guys who pioneered this show! Great memories.
Ray Combs and Richard Dawson are the two best hosts.
Amen!
Steve Harvey... shudder, shudder
Agreed. Steve Harvey sucks as FF host--with him it's all sexual innuendos and racial humor--typical stuff comics that aren't funny have to rely on to get laughs. This is when the show was still somewhat decent and fun to watch.
Mike Peterson, Steve Harvey isn't too bad.
Steve Harvey is awful. He shouts and acts too insane.
This is so sad. I liked both, Richard Dawson and Ray Combs. I don't understand why they ever got rid of Ray. He was always so cute and cheery. Family Feud is one of my favorite game shows. Always loved watching it... Missed him not being on there.
I'm so sorry. I loved Ray Combs as Family Feud host. RIP Ray.
ray sounded very depressed on the last show
Ray actually makes a mistake in that last round. He re-asked the "Best place to people watch" question when the guy had already given an answer. Granted, Ray was probably pretty emotional at the time and was having a hard time getting through the segment.
Not only that, but he stumbled on a question, the right thing to do was to go back to a question that was missed at the end after the buzzer the way current Feud does and give the contestant a chance to answer. Current Feud is handled with a lot more fairness.
He was the best Feud host, IMHO- Hollywood just likes doing people dirty.
In my opinion, Ray Combs was a great host for Family Feud because he was laid back and energetic. Even though he died 22 years ago, I still consider it tragic today.
crazycoollady1999 I haven’t considered it a tragedy since 2009 or 10.

Ray was a cool dude. It was shocking when he left the world too soon. He will never be forgotten.
Today I just heard about how he died and was shocked. In this one short clip he shows more improv talent than in 100 jimmy fallon episodes. A shame everything spiraled for him, and may he RIP

I watched Ray Combs on the Family Feud for years. I liked Ray--he was fast, and a little smart alec but not too much I was shocked when I learned of his death. I think it's a tragedy. Rest in peace Ray.
If only they never thought about replacing Ray Combs from Family Feud in the first place, this outcome would never have occurred; but too bad, no one did anything to prevent this. Well Ray, I hope you are in a better place and better condition right now, in heaven. I always take pity in such people.

...ok?
Yes, sadly, this Friday, May 27, 1994 was last day of late Mr. Raymond "Ray" N. Combs Jr. as "Family Feud" host though for now, with its new host(only shortly) being again the late Mr. Richard Dawson, still, apparently, late Mr. Eugene "Gene" E. Wood was its studio announcer! (However, also, with late Gene as studio announcer, for 2 last years[of Ray's lifetime], Ray Combs Jr. became host of new game show called "Family Challenge", though after his Sunday, June 2, 1996 death, Mr. Michael Burger had replaced him as its host!)
It was the last episode for him.. Richard Dawson resume as host of the show in 1994 after this episode. The shows rating were dropping so they asked Ray Combs to get out and brought the master back!! Sad to here about his death.
What a couple of boneheads this family picked to do the final round. Sad ending and goodbye to Ray Combs.
You can thank Johnathan Goodson for that. He wanted to give Ray the worst send-off ever after unceremoniously firing him.
Hopefully those two weren't the smart ones in the family.
"Something that is built to last" - kind of ominous last fast money question for Ray's final show
True. Didn't think about that.
This was not only the first time Ray Combs had a person that actually got no points, it's also the only time he had a person that actually got no points on the Family Feud's "Fast Money" bonus round.
Getting fired from gigs and starting over is the story of many television personalities...it's just the way it goes and most go into it knowing that is part of the deal in the cutthroat business of television. I think though there were other things going on with him. He was basically broke due to bad investments and his wife later left him. Also, maybe being the father of 6(!) made the pressure too great. He also was this guy who tried to be the perfect person (school class president, etc.).
What talent it is ashamed he left the world at a young age, rip Ray. Its kinda sad that a person isn't usually appreciated til they are gone.
So, the execs screwed the show up and blamed Ray for all they did. In no universe should that ever happen or even be considered.
Although I understand why, I have never seen Ray Combs so bitter. He was one of the nice guy hosts of the Feud, not loud and abrasive like Dawson or O'Hurley were, but he just let the mask drop in that last episode, digging his fangs into that last contestant.
At the end, he just waded through the crowd and snuck away... if you watch carefully, you'll notice members of the two families looking around, wondering where the hell he went.
I have often thought that myself Dubs.
It was unusual to see a young guy who had such a great knack for hosting a gameshow. He and Bob Barker got along well, too. Ray modeled prizes and showcases a few times on TPIR and even did the "inspiration putt" in Hole in One once. And Bob and his staff appeared on numerous episodes of Ray's Family Feud. He would have been the natural successor to Bob. Such a shame.
I think Ray Combs said "See you next time" meaning "Next time I'm on a TV show" rather than "Next time on Family Fued". There actually was a next time because he went on to host a short-lived TV show called "Family Challenge". Despite the name it wasn't related to Family Fued. Of course he may also have said that because that's how he always ended. I heard he was told to treat it like any other episode and not acknowledge that it was his last day. A few of his comments did give it away though.
*Feud
R. I.P Ray :(
He wasnt a Scientologist,He was a Latter Day Saint(Mormon).
This family made the York family (Remember "Alligator"?) look genius.
What an awesome way to go out.
Ray Combs sadly didn’t go out the way he wanted during his final time on the Feud. During the end of the show, he was feeling dejected after he knew he was fired from his job. I feel very bad for the guy. So many times he attempted to resurrect his career, but never panned out. He was supposed to do a talk show, but no affiliated station picked it up. I haven’t seen Family Challenge on the defunct Family Channel, which the first season is the only season appearance in his life before he took his own life in June 1996. Ray is such a good man and he could’ve made more successful projects as both a comedian and game show host. A great beautiful soul gone way too soon.
I hope that maybe this final episode of the "New Family Feud" exists on Buzzr in the future.
Ray is one of my favorites in The Game Show World, & I eventually figured everything out regarding the circumstances. My heart hurts for both you "kittycat321430" & your mom. I am hopeful that time heals the wounds that the pain Ray felt & the pain you guys feel is subsided by the memories that Ray left for you guys. We miss Ray a lot, & we share in your grief.

Thanks for uploading these clips. I was young when Combs was host and barely remember this- although I did watch the Feud. I do remember when he died and it was in the news. I was sad by it, wondering how bad things must have been to hang oneself. I always preferred him to Dawson, but my parents preferred Dawson to Combs. Guess it was a generational thing. Thanks again.
