I plan to retire at 62 in another country outside the US that is free, safe and very cheap with a high quality of life. I could fully just rely on only my SS if I wanted to when that times arrives but l'll also have at least one pension, a 403 (b) and a very prolific Investment account with my Stephanie Janis Stiefel my FA. Retiring comfortably in the US these days is almost impossible.
I plan on moving to the Philippines after retirement.

Owning a house is a sort of a pension plan on his own.
When needed you can sell the (big) family house and buy an smaller one. The rest of the money can be used for bills and food.
People will say: I do not sell my big house because of the memories. The memories are in your mind, heart and photo-albums.
Owning a house is also a safety. You will always have a roof over your head. A place where you can keep warm and safe from danger.
Owning a house should not be a privilege of the rich. It should be for everyone.
True ... unless your modest neighborhood becomes gentrified, and taxes increase to the point that, as a senior on a fixed income, can no longer afford them. And there is no 'smaller' house, 40 years after you purchased your home, that you could possibly afford.

@@Cynthiatomaski-s4b I mean if you actually wanted to move to a smaller place because you don’t want the headache of maintaining a large house, you could really go anywhere you wanted depending on what kind of neighborhood you want to live in…But, if you want to stay in your current place because you don’t have a problem with the maintenance and it’s comfortable and you’re familiar with the area, and you want to live out your life there, I don’t have any problem with that. I think all of those are perfectly valid reasons not to sell.
I actually disagree with the OP’s point that retired people who choose to stay in houses larger than they need is the main problem with affordable housing.
The main problem with affordable housing is opposition from existing homeowners to initiatives for creating new housing. Many people, especially people who own larger, more expensive places, vote against these initiatives because they know new construction will decrease the value of their homes.
I think everyone has the right to live in their own homes without guilt and without other people judging their decisions as long as they don’t interfere in someone else’s right to build an apartment building or housing complex down down the street so other people can enjoy the safety of having and security of having a permanent “roof over their heads” as well. As long as you’re not opposed to that, you have the right to do whatever you want with your house.
Hope you realize that Harris wants a 50% capital gains tax and a 25% unrealized tax. So you are already paying 25% on the equity of the house, and then you will need to sell the house for a smaller one, and you lose half the difference from capital gains.
You're all so deluded. God help us. 😮

A capitalist who supports labor unions? Is that possible? Well yes, read about Harry Olds and George Westinghouse and you'll find that they also supported labor unions. Other capitalists in America and Europe have also worked in support of unions because they know that a happy workforce is a productive workforce. Raising it will put American companies at a disadvantage, discourage investment in American companies, suppress wages and jobs, encourage outsourcing, and raise prices.
