Hello I’m new to the channel, reason I was looking for external hard drive is because I had my iMac computer from 2012, can’t update anymore and is super slow, I’m thinking of buying m3 iMac in the next few days and wanted to keep iMac as clean of storage as you suggest, the question is can I put all my music which is around 300 gigabytes ? , yes I love music and have lots of pictures and short home videos as well, all together have around 450 gigabytes out of 1 TB and is old and slow , can I keep my old iMac storage separate in one of these LaCie external drives?
Hi! Yes you definitely can as long as you get a size that is appropriate for what you need! Also just make sure you get a hard drive that is the right port for your laptop.
I edited and exported my last video completely off one of these while going through a cheap 4 port splitter. A two hour and seven minute video in 4k 100mbs footage exported at 4k 50mbs. PC, Adobe Premier Pro CC 2022.
How hard is it to format to mac? I've been looking for a good external hard-drive for my graduate school files, hours of lecture videos, etc. I hate how other drives want you to download 4 or 5 different items before the compatibility can even be a "thing"- is this like this?
No not at all, it's pretty simple to reformat these drives on a mac - Once you connect the drive to your mac. Go to the "Finder" -> "Applications" -> "Utilities" -> "Disk Utility" -> Click on the drive you want to format on the left hand column, then click ERASE on the the top. Rename the drive to how you want to name it, and the it'll say "EXFAT" which is correct. Once you erase the drive, it's now been formatted. Of course, don't erase a drive if you still want to keep stuff from the current state, since of course reformatting it removes everything on it for good. Hope this helps!
Yessir! I have the 5TBs - and generally only use my external harddrives, never the drive on my computers. When I edit I use proxies, so this drive has always worked great for me on all my 4K projects. I shoot on a Sony A7iii, and usually tell my clients to buy this drive for the respective project.
Yes! But only if you first reformat the drive to “ExFat” on your disk utility on your computer. Reformatting the drive erases everything, so do it before you’ve saved anything on the drive.
Paul my drive keeps unmounting from my MacBook Pro. Does this happen to you? I’ve searched for fixes but nothing fixes it. Every morning I get over 20 notifications that the drive was removed incorrectly. 😓
From my experience hard drives unmount like that because of either loss of power to the device or faulty cabling. Do you have multiple devices plugged in when it happens?
@@PaulMcGovernJr indeed I do. It’s plugged into my LG external monitor along with other drives and the monitor is plugged into the MacBook. Oddly I don’t have this issue with the other two WD drives plugged in. Thanks for the tip, PMJ!
A boxer! That’s it! Yeah it does seem to happen if I have multiple drives plugged in, but very few and far between even then. Good luck with the drive!
SSD - Solid state drives that are external are much faster than HDD. - Hard disk drives. But often SSD's are more expensive. So it depends what you're using it for, editing video these days I would recommend SSD's. For basic storage and simple transfers, HDD.
That’s just dependent on the size you need, most of mine are 5 TB. Unless you’re referring to a solid state drive (SSD) - which in that case, yes that SSD would be faster.
Does this drive require an app? I'm looking for an external drive that can transfer all my photos from iphone to drive. Without having any access to them on the phone, unless I go to the drive. Can anyone help here? Thanks.
It doesn’t require an app. But you can download your photos to a computer and then transfer them on this drive. Which would be seperate than your phone. If that answers your question. Hope that helps
I like it a lot, I’ve used several too! I find it’s very portable, reliable, and great with my laptop. It’s a tad slow when rendering or editing 4K footage tho, so I wish the MB/s was better.
Normally for an iPad the harddrive needs to have it own power source to be connected. Which this drive does not have, unfortunately. So I don’t believe this drive would effectively connect to an iPad.
I would have LOVED to seen you talk less and show more!! 🤣🤣 I would have liked to have seen you hook the darn thing up so dummy me could view. I'm the person that has to see so it can register in the brain cells. You give very informative advice but when you get off track I forget what you have stated when you return to give the review. I'm old so maybe that is why I have trouble comprehending you. Be bless and have a great day!!! Now let me go check some of your videos out.
Thanks for watching! Let me know if you buy this drive or you already have it! If you need help formatting, get @ me!
The bundle link no longer works

do you save 4k videos on that ? and take a lot to copy the 4k videos in that hard drive?

Thank you you made me really want it. It is in my cart right now and I will get it soon. 😊 I appreciate you

I swap between Mac and Windows a lot - is it able to work on both?
Yes! But only if you first reformat the drive to “ExFat” on your disk utility on your computer. Reformatting the drive erases everything, so do it before you’ve saved anything on the drive.

Paul McGovern Jr Would you still recommend this in 2022 ?
Yeah totally - just bought another one last week!
@@PaulMcGovernJr Cheers, I store lots of music so hope this will do the job
Again, your warmth and ability to make concepts engaging is so striking.
It’s an iconic design. The brand is pronounced lah-see (rather than lay-see) though I think.
Yeah I was worried about that! 🤦🏻♂️ Thanks for letting me know!
don't waste your time with this hard drive. i personally ordered one and was immediately disappointed it did not come with a usb cord.
That’s a bummer! Hope you were able to find a a HD that was good for you.
Can I get an adapter to attach my iPhone
You might be able to! I’ll look into it!
Hey! nice video 😀 could you please share your overall experience with the HDD after using it for months? I'm planning to buy one 😉

I must get this
The LaCie Rugged 5TB External Hard Drive is relatively "slow" copying large amounts of mp3's.
Hmm interesting- not from my experience. But every computer and drive can be different.

this looks like the old version with the USB-B port on the box itself ...
not USB-C ...
The USB-C cable goes into the computer for this one! But yes newer versions have USB-C on both ends.
Too much nonsense talk. Cut to the chase. Thanks
