David is somewhere on the spectrum. That accounts for the behavior. Obviously he is super strong, but he appears to be very nice and humble too.
He is the nicest person in nowadays elite chess, just go check some of his interviews. He smiles simply because he loves this game even if the position is "not safistactory".
