However, most of the conversations to date have been with the Sun Belt Conference. Many are excited about the ability to move up to FBS, but there are some that aren't as excited about it being to The Sun Belt....which is somewhat justified, but still...you have to start somewhere. GO EAGLES!
It's all about funding. If they had a larger stadium and a bit more money to work with, they could go SEC. They're already holding their own against UGA, the second best team in the SEC- If they had more to work with I'm sure they could dominate.
The stadium is being expanded, but it still wont be the capacity of an average SEC football stadium. But really, that unnecessary because there isn't going to be 90K fans show up to a GSU game....but maybe one day. :) The addition as planned (and there are images online of the expansion) would put seating capactiy at 26 or 27K, and then there is overflow onto the grass. Attendance is on the rise, but we still average 21-22K for a game at this point(which exceeds current seating capactity)
Oh I completely agree. The football tradition is great at GSU. I think there are some steps being taken on the marketing aspect, but it still isn't where it needs to be yet. I've asked places in the past why they don't carry any GSU stuff (especially in towns within a reasonable radius from statesboro), and mostly I hear that the conference as well as the school had policies in place that made it difficult for non-official merchandise to be sold in various places. Hopefully it will get better
It's kind of up in the air currently. The fee that the students voted on would only be implemented if an FBS invite was given and then accepted. It would help fund the stadium expansion(an extension of the student side as well as an upper deck on that side), additional athletic related expenses that are associated with the move up etc. There's been a lot of speculation, but hopefully something will be anounced in the next month or so.
Right, I read about the stadium expansion. It's a shame they don't get the attention that could bring in 90k fans, I really do see great football being played here. I honestly think it's a matter of publicity. I know that I can go to my local Kroger and get any UGA merchandise I could think of... But there's none of that going on for GSU. It's a shame, is all I'm saying.
Even if they stopped using the triple option so much, I wouldn't quite say they are SEC quality. Divison 1 quality? Yeah I think that's possible, and will probably happen soon. But I wouldn't say they hold much of a candle to UGA, Florida, or any of these other SEC teams that were fighting for spots at the national championship haha. In due time though, I think they will be a big team in the nation, just not yet.
I think I heard that Georgia Southern actually is going to the FBS level? I don't remember when or where, but something about asking the students if they supported it and the students pushing for the move. Not 100% sure though.
zzzarkka We have been running the triple option since the rebirth of the program. It won us 6 National Championships and if we get on a roll then we would be a hard team to beat.
This was the first Georgia game I ever attended.

Great game!
I wish Georgia always had the black sock look

Definitely. Way past good enough to fit in any FBS conference
Georgia Southern is definitely in the wrong conference. I think they are undeniably SEC quality.

Uga surrendered over 1000 rushing yards combined vs GSU, GT, and Bama
