    Honestly, as someone who likes to build steam locomotives I like how Power Functions allows you to get more specialised motors for higher speed or more pulling power and direct control to the driving wheels of one instead of using a 9v motor somewhere else in the train.

      True. but hear me out what id lego went back to the powered track. and had both powered bogies like the original 9 volt system and Pick up bogies that could be used for using other motors. further more they could make them all worked via the current Bluetooth or other connections they use now but no more batteries also this would be using same system as modern train sets.

      Single axle pickup bogies would basically eliminate the need for the giant battery storage which takes up a lot of internal space, and would also allow for very compact PF motor-driven engines. There should also be a version built around the larger driver wheels so you can build an 0-6-0 configuration as an example.

    These old motors and mainly the connectors, were a part of the "lego dacta" set. Lego dacta was one of the first lego robotics project commimg before the nxt, ev3, spike and some battery powered thing whitch i forgot the name of... Anyway lego dacta worked like this. You had an old computer with a serial port. Like crt was the main display type old. then, you'd use a panel of sorts that had 5 blue sensor inputs (how many rotations and stuff like that), 5 yellow inputs (different sensors like button or tempreature) and i think 5x2 motor outputs. There were a few types of motors of whitch i remember 2, 1 was all speed and the second one was slower and you could actually tell it "rotate 2 times" and it did it exactly (basicaly motor and servo). And lastly it had 1 always in connector and a stop button. Anyway, this was years ago at a a club( Please exuse my english, it's not my first language and i don't know if this is the right expression) we were building an actual claw machine and it had so many inputs, sensors and motors, we needed 2 PC's, 3 dacta panels(one only for power as it drew too much from the other 2) so it would have enough sensor slots. If it worked, i will never know for reasons i won't go into. but your video sent me on a trip down the memory lane.

    As long as the circuitry is simple and doesn't have power feed back prevention in place, all electronics work this way. That's why there's a positive, negative, open circuit and closed circuits. The power literally circulates in a circle continuously, meaning you can connect power or other power consuming devices basicly anywhere within a circuit especially where there's already terminals.

  • @TheSpacecraftingProject

    Fun fact: if the 9 V motor being powered by a battery hits 9 V track, with another 9 V motor powered train on that track, power will be fed through the wheels of the battery powered motor, through the tracks, and into the other train motor. This causes sudden full power to that second train, possibly resulting in a crash when you least expect!

    As a model railway guy, I prefer the new Powered Up system for Lego over the 9v. This is because you can have more than one train on the same track at once (simmilarly to a DCC system for models), which allows for some great fun. If there was a way to have two 9v trains run independently on one track, I would 100% prefer the 9v for how compact it is.

    Yep, compatible with the old Mindstorms RCX robotics stuff too, either onboard the train using the connection on the train motor, or through the track using the track cable plugged in the other end to the RCX. Speaking of things being two way, dunno about anything newer, but the motors that came with the Mindstorms kits could also function as generators, and everyone who knew this tried to make a perpetual motion machine with two motors connected to each other with wires and gears. Thinking about it, I’m sure you could make a hand crank using a motor like that, that powers a train motor.

  • @WilburJaywright
    @WilburJaywright 12 днів тому

    Yep. Since there’s no reason to put backdrive prevention diodes in between the train’s wheels, motor, or terminals to feed the light, the motor doesn’t care where the battery is connected to the wiring.

    As a building system, i much prefer the power functions system. 9V is easier but just feels like lego on a model train. Not to mention with power functions you can control more than one train at once which you can't do with the a single 9V current. power functions also avoids shorting out your track when you want to make a reverse loop and allows you to power different types of wheels than just these standard small ones. Notice how much nicer PF steam locomotives look than 9v. Also on a personal level i hate how shiny the 9v wheels look on a train compared to the rest of them it looks so out of place. BUT to each their own i can't deny 9v is classic

    I mean, with the 9v trains you can either use them as Suburban Trains using the Tracks as Energy Source, where you can mark them with a 3rd Rail bar either in the middle or on the Side of the Rail - or you can put these Battery Boxes into a Loco, where it can Act as a Diesel Locomotive. Well, that would probably work for Power functions bogeys as well, but idk you should decide. Btw, is there a way to use both options? Like it uses the 9v from electrified tracks, and when it drives on plastic Tracks, that it switches to Battery Pack? That would make this train a Hybrid... 😮

    • @brickstudiosYT
      @brickstudiosYT  5 місяців тому +1

      Yeah, technically you could make it a hybrid but a battery box would power the 9v tracks that are already powering the motor, and vice versa. This might make it short circuit or something. So if you just detached and reattached it to the battery box every time then it'd work.

      @@brickstudiosYT I don’t think it would be too much of an issue to have the battery feed the tracks, and you can always stop the tracks from feeding into the battery using a diode. You could also fix the battery powering the tracks issue with another diode, but you’ll have to take the wheel assembly apart to solder the diode in

    You could also put a controller with it and it would be pretty sick. That thing would be insanely fast

    I had the 9v train motors as a kid and I have no idea why you would want them over battery. They were fiddly, all you needed was one piece of track slightly disconnecting and you'd have to search the problem for a couple minutes, you couldn't ever build a track that would turn trains around because that would create a short-circuit, running multiple trains would mean they had to divide the power between them ... Battery is SO MUCH better.

    The design has varied only slightly from the original 12v powered rail kit. I still have my old LEGO 12v train transformer.

    You can actually power a battery motor with it while in use

    I love the wall power.
    Had these nice banana plugs, so one day, when my parents didn't give me the transformer, I figured they perfectly fit into the wall power outlet.
    Spent the night in hospital 😅

    It's backfeeding your house does the same thing you can backfeed a generator into any outlet in your house just make sure you're not connected to the grid otherwise you're powering the whole neighborhood

    Yeah I love 9volt it’s only $500 definitely worse than the detailed $130 power function trains that do the same thing

    I use it as "autopilot" so it runs whenever I'm not controlling it
