    Watching this made me remember when I travelled to Borneo in 1993 because that's when I first heard about deforestation on the tv and I wanted to see it for myself. I hitch-hiked over the mountains on the back of logging company utes and up the Rajang river to a remote Jungle school. There were no concrete long houses but the river was already silted and the destruction of the land and the spirit of the people involved in the industry was already evident. It shocks me to think this is still going on at an accelerated rate. What will it take to stop? I hope these indigenous tattooists can some how revive the culture and educate the new generation to unite and stand up to protect their homes.

    Greeting from Singapore, my parents originally from Sri Aman (mom) and Kanowit (dad) Sarawak. I was born in Sabah (tawau) called as Iban Sabah and now bejalai (migrated) to Singapore for more than 10 years. Always travelling every years visiting family and relatives in Borneo Island.
    I am proud to be Iban and i am against deforestation in Borneo Island. 💪

    I I have just come across this amazing video and I take my hat off to you for documenting this. I love the beautiful people I saw and the awesome tattoos they wear and I real hope the revival lives on. Thank you for also documenting mans quest for money, it was sad to see the loss of the rain forest and the animal that rest within.. Religion has no place there and I hope it gets kicked out. Would love to get a tattoo by you. Blessing to the people of Borneo and to you..

    So I was in Sarawak last summer, we literally had the same driver through his mutual friend Sampson. They took us to a valley where we then treked 8 hours to a village. I still have the hand tapped tattoos today from the village and they mean the world to me.

    There are specific reasons for making Iban tattoos called pantang or kalingai. The overall design of tattoo on respective body parts must be properly made by the tattoo experts and elders. This is so that for the tattoos to serve functional and aesthetic purposes namely to call for spiritual self-protection while on daily activities and major sojourns, to mark key events of history or achievements in one's life and to act as decorative accessories for the human body.

    The translation is a bit off.. eg: in 13:34 what he actually said was “they thought the women wanna sleep with them” and thats why everyone was laughing and in 16:48 he said he is 98 years old and had tattoos since he’s 28 years old

    • @fademeraki
      @fademeraki  4 роки тому +1

      Thank you. I think the translator recording could have gone out of time with the recordings a couple times making it hard to subtitle exactly. It was hard to edit because usually the whole village are just off camera and would be discussing the topic too when I was asking questions for interviews. It's so old now I don't have a way to edit it but I appreciate the translation and will be sure to get more help if I can do something like this again. It was an amazing experience with just myself and 1 camera person on low budget. Thanks for watching!

    And. Allllllllll of a sudden I felt beautiful . I am half Indonesian half Dutch . I’m pale but have allllll the indo traits but didn’t even realize . Strong jaw line . Big ass forehead that I’ve always tried to hide with bangs. I’m tattooed. And a self taught tattoo artist Certified micro pigmentation Artist . I’m the weird girl that loves the forest or anything outdoors or diy way to much . I have tools ⚒️ like many of them. I’ve always felt like I didn’t belong. Now I know where my roots really are. It’s making me cry a stupid happy ugly cry. I just did my makemanfuck

    I'm a Sarawakian, a Dayak Bidayuh true blood from both parents. I'm not here to comment much about tattoo but being born as a Christian Dayak, I got myself tattooed during my teen years but after I've became a grown adult and I got deep into Christianity Theological doctrine, I would just like to add some details regarding tattoo in Christianity. In Christianity your body is the temple to the Holy Spirit and some tattoo from some culture have spiritual meaning and definitely clashed with that value, you know what I meant. Thai tattoo for example. And today actually many Christians have tattoo of course depicting Christianity. Christianity is not a religion, it's a personal spiritual realtionship of oneself with the Divine one so there's no such one template for all, but each have of their own special relation, if you can get what I mean. Tattoo wasn't just some kind of body fashion back then, to women yes but to men at certain matter it was not just for some chic swag, it does have spiritual meaning to it, not entirely in general term though. Regarding the issue of the land that being manipulated politically by greedy ruling elites they seems to have their opinions and info about right but not entirely correct. Today Dayak locals have successfully taken and fought back the land bit by bit. I'm talking not just about Sarawak region but Borneo Island as a whole. These artists are great in doing tattoo as art and that's it. They are entirely in their artistic world and rarely aware much about politics and other ideologies, but anyway thanks for a good documentary regarding part of the culture of our land and you seems to care a lot with great passion and honesty regarding our land issue. From the way you say it and that tone, you are a fighter just like us Dayak warriors, and another thank you for that. We rarely hear that from our local tattoo artists. Shalom and be blessed.
