This short hit way to close to home, I loved the story between a stressed out son and his older father just trying to make him happy even with the little memories he has left, this was so heartwarming and inspirational I'm glad this short was given in my recommendations💕
the fact that he never properly answered the question “why can’t we go to the carnival” in the beginning speaks volumes about the accuracy of this portrayal. stressed-out unfocused parents don’t want to answer the question, they just want to say the thing that’ll make their kids shut up the quickest, hence the rain answer. the twist of the child being how he sees his father was phenomenal and made the dialogue even more powerful
this made me cry, it so increadibly well done. I thought maybe the kid was his concience but no a father with dementia, gut punch. Truly gorgeous, this deserves so much more attention!
I like the details that stand out on the second watch -- like the old man's insistence that his son not smoke foreshadows him just wanting to care for his son, and his insistence on not needing his pills making more sense from an adult dementia patient than from a child.
Had to watch it twice. This was one of the best and most heart felt shorts I've ever watched. The older guy obviously has dementia/Alzheimer's which is why he's portrayed as a little boy. Helping and totally dependent upon the working father. The working father probably unintentionally has allowed the stresses of his job to cause him to lash
The dialogue makes a lot more sense on a second watch. I thought saying "'I'm sick of you" to a child was too intense, but looking back it comes together since this character has already spent so much time taking care of the father. Nicely done
It took me a couple watches to realize, from the main characters perspective it looked like he’s trying to get work done while putting up with a child’s antics. When in reality his dad was actually just worried about his well-being. Seeing how hard he worked and how unhappy he was, he just wanted to do something nice for his son, but he was dismissed as an annoyance every time. Even in his old age, he still wanted to take care of his son, even though his efforts went unnoticed.
OHHHH MY HEART Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh my heart. I hope he takes his dad to the carnival every day if it makes him happy. I'll take him. I want treats :( we can watch all the lights and games together.
I thought it was kinda weird that the son refers to his dad by his first name in the beginning of the short. So I did a little research and found that a child calling their parent by name can be a sign of an erosion of family roles, such as son and father. Considering how the son views his father and serves the role of a father, it would make sense that he calls his father by name, like a parent would to their child.
this genuinely made me cry. never once has an animation made me bawl my eyes out. it made me miss my baby and my mom. i love how it captures the panic it feels to lose something. how it captures the innocents still inside an old man just trying to help his son. how it portrays his illness (to which im assuming is memory related)
I watch CalArts short films regularly for over 5 years. I'm telling you, this is the best work in providing the emotions so far. I've never cried on the CalArts animation even if it was a sad one. But I now rewatched this. I cried again. This is so amazing Luke! And it hits so hard right into me. I'll do my best in letting as much people as I know to watch this art.
I fear of becoming Dante so much as I watch my loved ones grow older, and with all that comes with age. This is such a wonderful inspiring film, thank you!! Beautiful work, keep going
When the reveal happened I thought it was going to be about dementia and that the grandpa forgot that he wasn't a kid anymore and was trapped in his memories.
I’m not much of a cryer in fact I can go more than 7 months without even thinking about crying it’s rare that sappy stuff makes me cry but this got me I can’t stop crying they completely got me invested and empathetic in 7 minutes
Gorgeous film. I knew it would hurt, but I didn't think it would be like this. Absolutely beautiful film. Thank you. For those of us who long for melancholy, this is most helpful.
My grandma had dimentia, it runs in my family. One day my mom might have it, and one day i might as well. And I'm scared, im so scared. One day, I'll forget every single thing, and i'll be alone.
An incredible piece of art! Bravo to the creators! The second watch made a lot more sense! I noticed photos in the background of a young kid, I guess it could be the fathers house and the photos are of the working son when he was younger! Great work guys 🙏👏❤️
(comment continued) out. All the little boy wanted was to go to the carnival and spend time with his father. At the end realizing the little boy was actually the working father's ailing Dad, who simply wanted to take HIS son to the carnival to make him happy, even giving him a much deserved break from him stressful job.😢
(Spoiler warning) It's funny because the first time the "kid" appears on screen at 1:08, I thought it was a grandparent (from the way he was sitting in the chair I guess?) so I was surprised when it was in fact a child, and I love that it ended up being an old man who cared. Then the "Do you know my child?" made me tear up
I read the comments, I knrww we what the punch was gonna be. But I still started sobbing as soon as the camera revealed it.
I have tears in my eyes now

Why isn't this popular. This is a masterpiece
Apparently youtube hates animation
Just wait till the algorythm goes crazy and this becomes a hit 8 and a half years from now.
Because masterpieces are not popular in most of cases. The most of people prefer stupid things, unfortunately
