Truth About Android Custom ROMs
- Custom ROM is the best way to give an old phone a new life.
- This is based on my personal experience being an enthusiast of custom ROMs.
- I used to love buying 2ndhand flagship smartphones and entry level ones.
Android Custom ROM
- is an Android OS unofficial version taken from different flavors of Android or from AOSP
- Android Custom ROMs are modified versions of an original or pure Android Google.
- Android Custom ROMs are mainly created for the purpose of a developer or group of developers whim whether to add or remove features, fun tweaks, or make it more efficient for battery or more powerful for gaming
- Matter of fact, the ROM from Custom ROM is a misused term derived from early use of memory where everything was just READ-ONLY-MEMORY (ROM) like the gameboy games.
- The proper term is Android Custom Firmware
- But since most people easily recognize Custom ROM than Custom Firmware, it became that unofficial name for basic or non-advanced users.
- So for now, we'll call it Android Custom Firmware
ADVANTAGES of Android Custom Firmware
1) Get the latest Android OS version
2) Get the debloated Android version
3) Get the De-Googled Android version
4) Replace Manufacturer Skin with Stock or any skin version
5) Get Additional Features and System Tweaks
DISADVANTAGES of Android Custom Firmware
1) Expect a lot of Bugs
2) Irregular battery Drain
- unless you found a battery-friendly ROM, you get a battery hog ROM
3) Custom ROMs have typical hardware issues
- Creating a custom ROMs require time and a lot of attention to the detail
- developing a modified driver for a hardware may not be compatible for another hardware within the phone and could create errors
4) Incompatibility Issues on Google Play apps and games
5) Risk of getting a malware like spyware or backdoor program
FINAL THOUGHTS:
- Creating a Custom Firmware requires a lot of time and effort to a single developer or even a group of developer.
- People say it loosely by wanting a custom ROM every time they feel annoyed by the limitations of their smartphones
- Installing an Android Firmware on a smartphone is not easy as 1-2-3.
- You need to know the tools required including software versions
- Requirements are exact and proper firmware versions, a flashing tools compatible for your phone, a driver for ADB to work, custom recovery, boot.img, TWRP, bootloader unlocker if your phone
does not support it, and GApps if you still want Google in your phone.
- You will have to search and download those tools.
- Back in the days, it took me a week or two of trial and errors for every single phone I need to customize.
- Those are just the basics. There are new tools now but they all still require proper research and knowledge to use.
- Also, if you really decide to install custom ROM on your phone on your own, you should be willing to expect to brick your device.
- Do a custom Firmware installation if you already studied how it's done or you have a friend who already knows.
- Do not desire a custom ROM just because your phone lags.
- There are many reasons a good performing device lags and that includes over-installation of apps and games and let it run free in the background
- Finally, custom ROM or firmware cannot magically make your entry-level phone into a flagship level phone. At best, you will only get 5-10% boost in performance due to debloating and kernel modification.
- What you should do is don't cheap out on your daily driver phone.
- Save money if it's out of your reach.
- If you can't afford to save money and wait, accept the consequences of using an entry-level phone.
- Don't go asking for a custom ROM to fix the limitation of your device.
- If you can't afford a mid-ranged or flagship phone, can you afford to brick your phone and buy another entry-level phone?
- Think about it.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Dati nako nagcustom rom lalo na sa mga myphone at cherry mobile devices na gusto ko gawing Xperia or Samsung firmware. I guess kung sino man interested magtweaks ng firmwares ay experimental purposes nalang or additional knowledge.
Been flashing roms since my first android Samsung Galaxy Young 2011, it was Gingerbread at that time and here's what I've learned on custom roms. It's safe, as long as the custom roms are open source linked to the dev's github. The only way that will bypass bank apps and games security is thru rooting and bypassing safetynet and also switching to SElinux to permissive which is very risky (You google why). Also some kernels can damage your phone, specially those that overclocked cpu/gpu speed and screen refresh rate, It's safe to stick with kernel that comes with the rom. TLDR. Open source roms are safe, just be cautious with rooting. Right now I'm using ArrowOs on my poco f3 because MIUI is so buggy.
Same, been flashing roms since Samsung Galaxy Y and Galaxy Pocket. Most of my phones had a custom rom installed, mostly ones I've either ported myself or from official open source releases. It's relatively safe. And honestly it's a lot more secure specially when it comes to privacy. Most phone manufacturers harvest tons of data from their users, there's a reason why Chinese phones are cheap and it's because your data is a part of the sale price. As long as you are vigilant with what you are installing and stick to Open Source Official releases, or port roms yourself, you should be fine. Right now I have an S8 running LineageOS (degoogled) and a POCO X3 pro running ArrowOS + NGK.
There's just too many advantages to having a custom rom, mainly Continued Security updates after the phone is abandoned (The latest official security update for the S8 is still 2020, while mine is on the June 2022 update), less bloeatware, full-control of the phone, better performance, extended battery life and plenty more. Unless a stock rom exists that enables me to have everything I want I'll have to go with a Custom Rom.
Also +1 for buggy MIUI, my god MIUI 13 is a mess that I will never go back to. I tried it for a while, and decided to flash a custom rom again, it was on a league of it's own in terms of instability.

True. Ako nga been rooting and ROMming since 2012 at wala naman ako nagiging problema. And the most valid reason para mag custom ROM is kung end na ang support ng device mo. Gaya ng mi pad 4 plus ko na dead on arrival (kahit bago pa wala na agad support that time).
Totoo eversince i was flashing custom roms and kernels too and i didn't had any harm. I think it depends on the reputation of the developers itself.

kaka root ko lang and flash custom rom ngayong araw na to dun sa cp ng asawa ko which is umidigi a5pro.. mahang n tlga sya magmula nung nag update sya sa latest version, I tried to format it ,wala pa din.. then inaral ko muna ng maigi dhil iba pala ways to root ng mga mtk .redmi note4x kc ako nagstart mag custom rom dati, so far so good. To make the story short, success nmn and nawala yung lag ,naging smooth at mas maganda pa sya kaysa nung bago naming bili 😄.. tnx sa napaka sustansyang content mo IDOL ❣️

Hi sir, ask ko lang if may custom rom na naga-allow ng gestures with 3rd party launchers. Ever since tanggalin ng Xiaomi yung feature na yun wala ako nakuhang concrete answer. Di ko tuloy alam kung change phone or try ko mag change OS.
Wala naman kasi talaga ako problema sa MIUI hanggat kayo ko itago sa magandang home screen with fully working gestures.
Basta Xiaomi, palagi kong ini-installan ng AOSP. Nakakairita kasi ‘yung stock system apps, puro ads. Tsaka mas maganda itsura ng stock Android.

But I think mas appropriate ang 'custom operating system' over 'custom firmware', kasi firmware is a whole mismo while custom operating system mainly targets /system and /vendor partitions. While firmware targets the whole. Kumbaga, ang OS ang mukha ng phone at ang Firmware ay ang katawan ng phone. Yun lang sir, iba na kasi ang 'custom firmware' sa 'custom os'.

Bro, i have google pixel sailfish or model G-2PW4100 na corrupt yung OS nya while downloading update matagal na last 2016 mahina kasi ng net that time. so ngayon pag i-turn on mo sya, it display "Your device is corrupt. It can't be trusted and may not work properly." tapos nag research ako paano e reload yung original firmware nya pero ang problem ay the device is locked. hindi rin pwd ma unlocked kasi corrupted na system nya. may paraan ba na e custom rom nlang ang phone para ma installan ng OS. o di kaya may software ba na kayang e reinstall yung original firmware nya by force?

merong custom rom na ang base is yung official firmware galing sa vendor, meron ganto si xiaomi at samsung, kung saan close to intended use ng vendor w/ tweak, hindi ako dev pero ive been using custom rom since xperia neo, ang advantage ng custom rom today 2021, tweak/debloated w/c mahirap gawin kung di unlock ung bootloader mo o di ka rooted, for me mas marami pa ring advantages kesa disadvantage, anyways kudos sa youtube channel na toh, super lit mag explain, noob friendly ang content 🥰

Easy talk lang yan. Kapag di bihasa o di pa gaanong computer-literate, risky. Either softbrick issue or security concerns may occur due to lack of testing sa kung anong perfect na ROM sa specific model. Matagal nako nag ko-Custom ROM. So far so good naman. Kahit nga sa iOS, jailbroken rin ang gamit. Yun nga kase bihasa.

sir, safe bang iuninstall updates ung system service plugin at security ng xiaomi redmi note 9 pro ko?nung inupdate ko kasi ito nawala ung other files sa storage manager ko tas nagkaroon ng shared files sa lowest part sa loob ng apps and data ko. mamats sa makakasagot.

I ditched MIUI dito sa Redmi Note 9 Pro, and installed corvus os android 12 official.Swabeng swabe ang performance and did some tweaks sa magisk, for dolby atmos sound module and gpu enhancements.
Magisk (Zygisk) also helps in tweaking and enhancing the performance of your smartphone,Mag research lang ng modules na bagay para sa smartphone mo. Yun lang, more power idol and God bless :)

Nakakamiss mga bugs noong 2013 nung nagsimula ako sa ganyan. Highschool pa ako nun cyanogenmod. Buti ngayon umaayos na ata mga devs naiiwasan na masyadong bugs. Android ko ginagawa kong IOS interface. 😂 Sana kumalat knowledge mo sa mga tao. More power sayo lods. :)
I would like to mention that lineage os is open it means the source code is completely open to public anyone can make their own port lineage os official it means made by the original developer lineage os unofficial is a port from the original source code and also to everybody custom operating system android ubuntu touch mobian windows 10 on arm windows 11 on arm

Custom ROMs are safe as long as alam mo kung anong ginagawa mo. I highly doubt yung 2nd disadvantage mo since custom roms release their source codes as they are open source.
Pero malakas ang security ng open-source software kasi madaling makita ng mga programmers ang mga bugs at mga vulnerability.

Wag mag custom ROM kapag lag yung phone? Baka marami lang apps? Malamang kasi yung stock ROM madaming bloatware kaya nga need mo ng Stable and Official version ng Custom ROM na para sa phone mo kasi de-bloated na yun and mostly core apps na lang yung naka install. Low end si Redmi 6a ko but until now eto malakas pa rin using a stable and Official Nusantara ROM. Nega neto.

Naka custom rom naman ako poco x3 nfc working fine naman kaso nung nag install ako nang stock camera nya may naka lagay lang nang something wrong with my android device at yung error po yun ay naka base po yun sa messenger pag nag try kayo mag picture sa messenger may lalabas na error yun lang naman yung error or bug ata. Working fine naman talaga custom rom ko.

Naka Custom Firm ako. Sorry to say, but in a custom BUGS has been removed everytime security patches updated, also find a custom that is already stable because they tested it. On the backdoor, you can actually remove their function in the developer fully and even can remove logs. In a stable custom, no hardware issues actually, it ends very smooth and performace way better than its original state. Speaking of incompatibility, all apps in store is available, this is due to Magisk in which you can actually off the backdoor of it, make sure of security - always.

naalala ko dati ung naka cherry mobile ako.. nag install ako ng custom rom then na bootloop ako tas 4 days lumipas before ko naayos ung phone kasi wala tlga ako maintindihan non. and now nagiinstall na ako ng mga custom roms sa phone ko kahit kaka kuha ko lang minsan ineenjoy ko muna ung rom then pag nagsawa na ako sa skin saka na ako papalit ng rom. problema ko lang ngayon is naka Nova 5T ako and di na nag poprovide si huawei ng bootloader code para maunlock bootloaders. so sad to say di na ako naakkapag custom rom sa main na phone ko pero sa phone ng gf ko na dating phone ko which is Lenovo Z5s is lagi ako nagiinstall ng rom don pag napapansin nia na buggy ung rom na gamit nia.
