One thing I loved about the St Vincent model when I tried one was how unexpectedly comfortable it is to play. As odd as the shape seems, it doesn't FEEL strange at all sitting down.
I have the older music man one. Feels great sitting down, but might need to get used to how close the strings are to your leg. It’s a very slim waisted guitar.
The No. 1 thing you will notice when playing a Luke for the first time is how low and flat the frets are. No one ever mentions that in demos either. Definitely try before you think about buying one online. I was totally surprised when I first played one.
Steve Lukather was & is a very sought after union member session guitarist, it was his bread & butter before, during and after his time in Toto, Toto was actually born from session players meeting in gigs & forming the band.
I think a lot of these are available in their Sterling by music man division. Still not cheap or my idea of a budget price but they’re comparable to the electromatic range from gretch prices 500-1100
I own both the Luke III BFR and Majesty BFR. They're, without a doubt, the best guitars I've ever had. What I like the most is the playability and confort they provide, encouraging you to play more.
Hey Lee & Rab…Fascinating to hear you and Warren talking about Music Man in your store walkabout video this week, Lee…Particularly how they're small and comfortable so players that discover them feel more 'classic' guitars feel unwieldy, when going back to them!…Yet Rab, as he says, is a larger chap and still loves them. Now even more tempted, as a smaller man, I have to say…BTW Jakko's PRS vid this week is fascinating re piezo a pickup but his guitar has two separate outputs…Should Music Man consider doing the same?
Toto were top flight studio guys and played on tons of tracks before releasing their own stuff as "Toto". Luke played on a TON of Quincy Jones tracks in those days.
The " Beat it " riff was MJ's - Who sang it out to Steve in the studio (as he did all the riffs n parts to the musicians) - Lukather himself said in the Beato interview...
Not familiar with James Valentine but his guitar tone was my favorite easily! Also Frenzied Flame and Vileblood! Possible my 2 favorite games of all time, i love it!
The guitarist in that new band that is everywhere at the moment, The Last Dinner Party, uses the St Vincent guitar a lot. She's obviously a bit of gearhead. Interesting band. Should get her on Captain Meets sometime.
The St Vincent sound and look like Firebird PU. You can only get that chime with blade magnets inside the bobbins . HB's mini PU have just one PU flat across the base of the bobbins
Luke didn't write the "Beat It" riff; he played it and played the bass. Toto was basically the rhythm section and Eddie played only the solo. Steve and Eddie were great friends so this wasn't a difficult issue.
St Vincent designed her guitar to be conformable for a woman's body. That was the main goal. I wouldn't can St Vincent pop. Her music is wacky and not at all accessible to pop listeners. She writes very interesting music and uses crazy effects. You need to listen to her many times to start to appreciate her. She is a mad genius.
Some of those, if not all, need a bigger headstock. Not sure how much but an option would be nice, if i ever want to buy guitar from Music Man. In Fenders i quite like that bigger headstock, so i guess that's why Music Man guitar ones look so small.
I own a JP15 and love the small headstock and the directness of the strings from nut to machine heads, it makes the tuning awesome even with heavy tremolo use. Apparently the smaller size also means that most MM guitars will fit into the overhead lockers on aircraft whereas Fenders won't !
Great guitars that honestly leaves "some" other makers in USA in the dust. Superior quality and one of the first guitar companies that used S/S for frets on the majority of its models. Music Man may not be well known in the UK, but in the states their quality is well known ! Can't speak for the Sterling models (never owned one) reviews are great for that line.
Yeah- if you want to impress ppl and look cool you spend 3gs on a Gibson or Fender- but if you want to sound good and have an instrument that doesn't fight you, spend 3Gs on a Music Man.
I paid $765 and $1300 - ebay - used -both Lukes (USA older models) and sold them to trade up to two new Ibanez AZ prestige axes last year - best deal for a new guitar, plenty of used ones out there too. Deals are out there. Never paid $3k for a guitar and never will. Bought a FireFly from Guitarsgarden (strat) last week for $170 - those are outstanding for the money. Cheers !!@@stoneysdead689
Will always be a fan of JP and my dream guitar Majesty ! Kinda funny tho, every time Rabea puts his hands on those guitars, fretboard becomes small, hahaha.
It makes it kind of difficult to notice the different tones and nuances of each guitar with so much delay and effects. It would be good if they played each guitar with no effects, just straight to amp, in order to really have an idea of each one's particular sound
I hope we get a simplified Sterling Kaizen. Regular frets, humbuckers and fixed bridge. Reduce the back carve if it makes it cheaper. And keep the headstock instead of the ugly OG headstock of Music Man.
No one ever mentions how low and flat the Luke model’s frets are. Great sounding modern guitar with frets that feel like they have one level left in them before you have to refret
I know I had absolutely nothing to do with his decision, but I'm going to pretend that my comment on Rabea's video inspired him to name one of the finishes "Vileblood" 😂
Whats this BS about you being "just a youtube" guitarist? Whoever is saying that needs to shut up and go listen to fire by the silos right now. Your riff writing is amazing, your ambient work is on point and your music is great. It's on my go to playlist alongside Dream Theater, Megadeth, Sabbath and so on and inspires me to pick up the guitar when I get home. What more can you ask of an artist?
Actually, Music Man does make 400-600-dollar guitars guys- but they call them Sterling by Music Man- not just Music Man. I've never understood why- is Sterling a different company that just has Music Man make their guitars? Or are they like Squier? Idk- but looking at these for me is like looking at a Ferrari or something- it's amazing, and completely out of my reach.
@@lamech006 If I didn't already have a couple HSS Strats I would check out their Cutlass I think it's called- it's their take on a Strat basically. But- I want to try a Super Strat this time- and their Super Strats are pricey- out of my reach right now. They wouldn't be if I would wait about 3-4 months though-which is probably what I should do. Idk- I need to watch more reviews- depends on if ppl say they hold tune well or not. Ibanez in the similar price brackets have a locking nut on them- but no locking tuners. The Sterlings have locking tuners, no locking nut. I have no idea which is better.

Luke's story of the day his dad bought him a guitar brings me to tears every time. That Damage Control riff brings back G3 memories, that outro solo is just amazing!
Steve Lukather didn't write the Beat It riff, MJ sang it to him and he played it. And EVH's solo was already recorded. He says so in Rick Beato's interview
The lack of knowledge of St. Vincent music, even her genre & evolution is kind of a bummer. While she's gottena bit more into a pop sound, she's a winner of the Grammy for Best Alternative album...which is really her wheelhouse. Also incorrect about some of guitars spec.
So Very Cool, Thankyou. Amazing to have Rabea back, Man his playing is SO Awesome. And just his 'personality' is so amazing. I would love to see more Rabea and Pete together again ...... maybe my 2 favorite Guitarists and both awesome 'Blokes' too. Champions. The asymmetrical cut maple neck is slimmer on the treble side and thicker on the bass side and is just a pleasure to play for me. All The Best. Cheers
Michael Jackson wrote the riff to Beat It, Luke just played rhythm guitar and bass, originally through big Marshall's but Quincy Jones wanted it to be played across all radio genres so I think it's just a modded Fender deluxe. Toto are all over the Thriller album, everyone should listen to 'em!
I love that you considered the color of the nut. Black is clearly the color needed. I had my guitar tech cut out a new nut in black corian and I did final shaping and polish and my tele with oxidized carved paisley pick guard and ash tray pulls the eye to both ends of the guitar at the same time! I first saw Dream Theater in Glasgow at the Cat House club way back. John knows what a Glasgow Kiss is! Congratulations Bea, you're earned it and you belong there. And well done Lee and team for championing his talent.

I’ve played a full bore Albert Lee model one time, and had that exact experience. Became one of my most favourite and listed after models after that.
The pickups remind me of Firebird units...
Dying to try. The only EBMM model that interests me remotely
I have the older music man one. Feels great sitting down, but might need to get used to how close the strings are to your leg. It’s a very slim waisted guitar.

I like how Rabea has learned to subtly turn up and down the volume knob with a toe
While they are all out of my budget range, Music Man just really does beautiful guitar designs.
I think a lot of these are available in their Sterling by music man division. Still not cheap or my idea of a budget price but they’re comparable to the electromatic range from gretch prices 500-1100

We need the old guard back - Lee, Pete, Rob and Bea.
Bea’s Back! Love it
Interesting that 2 of the best smaller American guitar companies (Music Man and G+L) owed their birth to the late great Leo Fender.
Are these Elden ring references? I’m about it. Nice job Rabea and Ernie Ball
I agree with you about RUSH Lee. As much as I like the songs I can't listen to Geddy Lee for long before I have to turn it off.

A UA-cam guitarist? I feel offended for you. That said, this was a fun video! Great playing as always, an inspiration!
St Vincent inspiration for the guitar body was a dress... I think I watched something back when she released this guitar
Your hair looks great on stage!
The St. Vincent reminds me of the Eastwood Airline
Bea sounds like Bea on whatever guitar he plays. Cool to see him play a St. Vincent and still sound like himself :D

St Vincent pickup selection:
1: neck & bridge
2: all 3 pickups
3: neck
4: middle
5: bridge
The normal ones have that pickup selection, but Goldies have the conventional Strat-style 5-way selection.
