The New Religion of Guitar

- Guitarists and Rock n Roll are meant to often question the restrictions of society. But have Guitarists accidentally started a new religion?
Think Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, John Mayer, Jimmy Page.

I really like how you don’t just talk about guitars but subjects that link to guitars and why we think the way we do .
Brother you are onto something here! I'm always happy to get an upload notification from you!
If SRV was alive today he probably wouldn't have given a shite about any of this. If music is becoming a religion its foreshadowing that the current music world is worst than its ever been. We have all these old idols who will pass away and have become to some degree an icon and companies are trying to cash in on what iconography they can get because they know as well that the current music is also bad, they just don't want to admit it. The people who make money in music now are a bunch of intelligent individuals doing all the song writing and producing for the biggest artists that's about it.
This is, hands down, among the most original and thought provoking content associated with the (formerly narrow) subject of guitar enthusiasts.
Well done. We are clearly living in the era of peak ‘Substitution Hypothesis” - the 2011 proposition by Phil Zuckerman. Why would guitar worship be any different?
I find every topic you talk about to be very interesting. Wouldn’t mind listening to a 2hs history lesson from this man.
I love your channel buddy but I think you need to come up with a signature theme song. Keep up the good work brother. Your videos are so unique.
My personal reasons to obtain a signature guitar by a guitar hero of mine is "If it's good enough for them to use every show on a tour, it's probably even better than what I'd buy otherwise". Sure I'll play songs by that group/artist on it but I'll play other stuff on it. I see it as a well made guitar that is up to that artists standard, not really as a "status" symbol. I wouldn't even bring it up unless I was asked about it.
On its face, I think it's really cool to make an SRV silver sky... It's not the kind of thing I would buy, but I think it's really cool and good for the guy who does buy or has it done... But if it's pissing off purists, well now it's rock and roll
What a fantastic video have a wonderful day ❤😊
Well said. I enjoyed your discussion.
I remember seeing a les paul painted like an EVH Frankenstrat so anything can happen.
All the guitarist i know are too poor to buy Memoralia type guitars. So who buys them? People with good jobs not
related to the music business. i.e. Non musicians. I love your channel man, rock on !
Thanks man. Appreciate it
Guitar Idol worship can be fanatical to the point of Insanity. I like different players and styles, and coming from a percussion and piano, they all add to the sound I seek, but I don't seek to sound like, or act or copy anyone else. I play Percussion, piano, guitar, bass, and harmonica, and to me they're all like paint brushes that I pick and choose to create my vibrational Nirvana. Thank you sir, you're the swizzle stick the musical community needed to stir it's 'Grey Matter'. 😁🥂 Cheers!
Thanks. Appreciate your perspective and like how you framed it
Another great video. We humans have tendency to follow, worship and also condemn anything and anybody.Personaly I like your PRS SRV,looks great, not sacrilege to me.I do the same to one of my strats, from time to time it gets various looks depending on my inspiration(or who I follow).
The tremolo is wrong! SRV'S tremolo bar was on top!!!
Very nice way of looking at things. I like the guitar too, and grew up listening to bands and individuals of that era. The strange thing is, yes people treat this as religion, something they believe in so deeply that they cannot withstand any kind of change or deviation. I guess the guy would have done an equally good job with a fender too 😊.
BTW.. PRS are also good guitars and I am sure if you had given a PRS to SRV he would have played equally good.
Best upload so far, please keep this type of content coming. Haven't checked out all of your channel but really enjoyed the previous one on economics behind guitar prices. It's a different Asian perspective than other occidental GuitarTube commenters and as such has value IMHO 👍
Excellent video!!!!
Yes, I do!
You bring a different flavour to the guitar youtube community. ☺️
Interresting topic. I have players I admire, but not to a level that I care about them personally. I buy artist gear, but only because I like it. for example I had a Jimmy Page LP and I like JP ,but I also had a Jim Adkins tele that I liked and I don't even really know who he is. Somethings are so iconic like SRVs strat that I would buy a sunburst rosewood neck model, but not with SRV written on it ,that's were I draw a line.
I myself would feel a bit douchie' stepping out on stage with either the SRV or EVH guitar. I'd feel perhaps less tool like if it was a PRS SRV. But that's just me.
If I want a guitar that looks like Stevie Ray Vaughans, I’ll get it there, by playing it until years of playing make it authentically scuffed, scratched, & dinged. I wouldn’t buy an expensive new car with a brand new paint job, and tell the dealer to take a sander and hammer to it, to make it look “roadworn.” To me, the whole concept is ridiculous. But to each, his own…
As I see it, the guitar industry is going in two divergent directions. As you discuss in this video, there's the fetishization of guitars tied to the past; the making and marketing of precise replicas of the instruments the legends used to record iconic songs. On the other end of the spectrum, there's a bold breaking with tradition -- guitars with seven, eight, even nine strings, multi-scale guitars with fanned frets, guitars with 'true temperament' squiggly frets, EverTune bridges, guitars made out of beautiful, exotic woods or even made of non-wood materials, etc. UA-camrs Andre Flood and Darrell Braun often cover the more 'out there' guitar innovations.
Wouldn’t it be cool if people started playing like SRV after getting his copy guitar?
Hey Utkarsh, no need to respond, this reminds me a bit of the general brand loyalty that also affects us. I am not immune despite being conscious of it. There are tool brands I can't seem to avoid preferring in particular. Not to mention the Apple / Android thing, hoo-boy! I feel it's not just religious, it's tribal. We separate ourselves into camps without even really thinking about it.
Hopefully we dont have "holy guitar wars". . Or guitar "crusades".
I have a couple of signature guitars including a couple of evh guitars, but I immediately started sticker bombing them all and modifying to make them my own thing, I mainly bought the ones I bought because their good guitars and I like the specs for one example I have an Ibanez Paul Gilbert and I bought it mainly because it only has a volume knob and no tone and the switch and knob are out of the way of your picking hand compared to other Ibanez,, and it does look cool on stage , I think one of the things I get from my own guitar role models is to be yourself and not "worship" them ,but seeing other people around me I completely agree with srv is really great example as his style has almost become a separate genre and right on the line of the tribute band thing even when the players are playing their original music they're being gauged by how srv their tone and technique is.
Great video! I was thinking about getting a guitar made in the likeness of a famous guitar player. In the end I changed my mind because they follow another god and make condescending statements about the God I follow. They do this because many people are seeking their opinion out of curiosity and more knowledge about the person they are following.
Don't waste your time on what celebrities think, they'll believe one thing and profess another if it brings them publicity or a paycheck
Stevie was my favorite. He didn't only play Fender Strats either. I believe that if he was still with us he would have had a couple of PRS's by now. I get what your saying about religion and i don't disagree, however, this example would be almost like one religion paying tribute to another. Does that hapen in religions?
Ganesh. Gets head chopped off. Has elephant head attached to save his life. This new face of an iconic god could be a lens for the Hindu way of looking at all religions. It is just a mask for the underlying truth of reality. It is the way that these ideas are able to continue to survive in the mind. The music that we play is just an expression of the harmony that flows thru the galaxy.
The foundation of the Hindu faith is something like “All things in existence are expressions of Brahman”. You often see Krishna with a flute and sometimes a stringed instrument. So that even music is just an expression of creation/creator. This is my understanding. And so if you see a guitar that incorporates the form or aspects of another icon, this is a very common Hindu thing to do.
My question for you is : Is technology a religion?
make a video on how you cope with the first ding or small dent on your new $20000 guitar...
That makes me wonder. Does someone who's spent 20 grand on a 'relic' guitar handle it with care since they paid so much for it? Or does the fact that it's already beat-up make them less careful with the instrument.
Interestingly enough, while SRV had his beloved No. 1, he didn't exactly treat it with care. If you check out the El Mocambo concert, you'll see what I mean. 😃Also, I find it curious that No. 1 typically didn't appear on the cover of his albums. Did he think it was too beat up for that?
@@LXS-ud6yf you will NEVER catch me buying a relic... I had a master built Jazz bass made at Fender and I wanted it to be cherry perfect.. But, I suffer from mild OCD, so maybe I'm a bit different? I have one minor nick on my newest PRS and it's driving me nuts!
lol. I’d love to see that. Any guitar 20k or more is a collector item and shouldn’t really be played, as there is no actual way to justify the price other than looking at it as memorabilia. And anyone that says the guitar itself is worth that (and therefore plays it) is just diluted and probably not very experienced at guitar (except a few archtop players maybe).
@@Sams911can u get it filled in maybe? Maybe drag it behind your car a bit that should hide it too

Tribalism is an evolutionary adaptation designed to combat resource scarcity, the symptoms include hazing, and conservative _gatekeeping_ thinking. As we continue evolving the need for reactionary to insecurity becomes a mark of a frightened child and something than any gentleman would be ashamed to admit in themselves but as greater apes were all conditioned to aspire for the better while rejecting the lesser and there's alot of bad ideas born from that thinking. We would all be better off if we could just share our passions without judgment.
If someone had converted a squier or a glarry copy into an SRV Strat it would still have been fine - but to convert an already polarizing guitar (silver sky) is understandably sacrilege for the Fender Community. Vesay bohat time hai log ke paas, is frivolity ke liyay 😄
As long as it's a one off I guess it's OK. However I don't think it would be right to market something in a dead man's name, who never approved of the venture. I'm assuming that would be illegal anyway.
The anthem of this religion would be For the love of God
That’s a great anthem
unfortunately, you're right haha
Guitar players have been religious for at least 25 years; since the online discussion forums.
I find it exhausting that people are still arguing over the same stuff: tone woods, analog vs digital, and relic or no. I really enjoy getting into the details of amps and guitars but people have become gatekeepers for enjoying gear. Just mind your dang business and play what you can afford and like; you don’t have to be like everyone else. Reminds me of the gangs of Harley dads or road cyclists, with their uniforms
Wouldn’t it be fair to say that signatures guitars is a form of idolism? Some guitarists like John fruciante don’t have a signature guitars. I don’t think he is even interested in the concept because I’m sure he would have had one by now.
I guess the notion of don’t meet you “idols” is because fundamentally human beings are flawed.
Is it Religious, or obsessive compulsive programming ?

"'no religion" is a religion. Lennon was a pop star, not a theologian
The SRV PRS is ugly. I'm normally not drawn in to comment on signature type guitars but that looks nothing like what SRV would have played. I understand PRS has a strong customer base but this romanticising of Fender stratocasters and Gibson Les Pauls from the past is out of control. Looks like a ridiculous Chinese knockoff. Another marketing fueled money grab.
Guitar is so boring now. Everything that can be done has been done to death. I am so sick of hearing as many notes as fast as possible . The tones have been done to death. It's like a cartoon thing now.
Virtuosity is passe, as is the image of the "rocker" covered in tattoos and wearing all black...we need to bring back swagger and attitude and the sort of groove that makes people want to get up and move

Utkarsh, this made me laugh.
I get what you are saying but I think it more like hero worship of your favorite football or cricket player, not quasi-religious Jim Jones with a 6 string and here's some Kool-Aid.......
I love my guitars but not for who once played one like it, but because they are guitars I like to play.
Some were cheap, some expensive, but all are just metal and wood and plastic to be PLAYED.
They stay because something in their voice gives me joy. If that is not present they move on.
Tools for some and toys for the rest. For me they fit the toy category, I am not a pro, but a retired guy that plays out occasionally.
I could maybe name one or two famous players who played a guitar like I own, but I don't really care.
Haha I think sports fans can definitely have a religious fervour as well. If anything more so than guitar hero worship
