Don't do rallies, don't do charity rides or poker runs ...too many riders that just don't know how to ride in formation or folks that ride intoxicated.
Was there on my Harley, (2009) riding across America back to Nova Scotia and enjoyed the roads, Deadwood, Custer, great weather and reasonable priced hotels. Met the locals left before all the crazies showed up and continued the ride. Got the Sturgess TShirt! I totally agree with your comments! Also, mixing alcohol, bikes, inexperienced riders, (who many towed their bikes there) and a crazy wild weekend warrier attitude ....i just decided to avoid! Great ride down to Tennesee before heading North. Love America and the freedom of the open road! Gratitude to the service men/ women for our freedom.
Grew up in Sturgis in the 70's and 80's. It was a whole different time. The money stayed local (for the most part) back then. Crowds were far less numbers. Those that went (generally) knew how to ride. Locals were far more inviting. Vid is spot on for todays Rally. Too many dangerous inexperienced riders buying overpriced shirts whose profits end up in Hot Leather's corporate bank account. I stay away these days too and agree with your take other than the anti police stuff. Those undercover "feds" are there to prevent human trafficking, stolen bikes and illegal narcotics among other things. And if you're dumb enough to ride drunk then you deserve the DUI. I'm ok with all of this.
Nobody say you have to buy a shirt. I've stopped. If I buy it's before or after tge rally. I refuse to pay 3-$55 during. I can get 6-$45 or 50 after and 3-$35 before! Also look up and down the street. Last year 35 at one end 55 at other end.
I rode solo from Denver to Custer, SD last spring. I stayed a couple days and rode all the popular routes in the Black Hills. It was great, but it would have been no fun with hundreds of thousands of other bikers there at the same time
That’s exactly when you go. We show up a day or two after the event. If you’ve been to that event once you’ve been there enough lol. But there are some badass rides
I used to drink two bottles of wine every day, but cut down radically for similar reasons as you're describing here. Not hallucinations exactly, but false memories. Re-evaluating past conversations and imagining that someone meant something they actually didn't, or said something they actually didn't, then messaging them to demand why they said this or that. I guess I upset a lot of people and lost a lot of friends. Whatever you get out of alcohol, it isn't worth it. Brothers and sisters (and everyone in-between) take sips of the brew. Master your high and never let it take control of you or your life. Peace and love. ❤
The vendors pay to be there so the towns/area is making money. They also have to pay the sales tax and what not for selling there. That whole area probably wouldn’t be half of what it is without the rally honestly. It brings that whole entire black hills area money.
You are totally correct. During covid Sturgis was way into the red again and pushed for tge rally. They ended up with only $1.5 million in black at end of 2020 rally. Most of the rallies they make $15 mil
You made me smile! Only time I go to Sturgis is non-rally times. My neighbor's mom lives in Custer. So we want to have family gathering away from rally! I like visiting in spring time. In August get cold an rain in Sturgis, as seen now in 2023. Neighbor wants to take me to 2 story brewery in Custer he says they go to for class reunions. I'm not into huge pushy crowds these days!
When I was 18 in the 80s the campground didnt have a devider wall for the Showers. NO CELLPHONES. Life was crazy as Hell for a few Days. Its a old woman trailer ride now.
I went to Sturgis a week before the rally one year, and it was better than when the rally is going. I don’t do the rally’s or charity rides, there are just too many people that are weekend warriors, and I have seen all sorts of motorcycle accidents at these types of events.
I'm a Sturgis local of 33 years, born in that hospital on Junction, and raised. I avoid the rally as much as I possibly can. It's difficult yes, but I feel like the rally is like my crazy family member. I was told I had my first rally experience in a baby stroller. I really believe most locals, if they truly hated it they'd fight politically at the community center during city council meetings. Although the rally is more than just Sturgis, it's surrounding cities, and states as well. It might be a long battle. I'm in a love hate relationship with the rally.
Never thought about it that way , I've been through the area when there wasn't a rally , beautiful scenery. I live Florida , I won't even go to bike week Daytona basicly similar reasons . Last time I went asked myself, why am I here , I'm not really digging it anymore seems like a waste time& money . Maybe going once just to experience Sturgis maybe , but I'm not going out of my way for it. One of those the stars line up and I'm close by so why hell not kinda things. Maybe if they have a cool welding & fab show that might peak my interest. 😅
Been going every year since 95 and it’s changed alot but it’s what you make of it when you’re there, it’s “merica” and free people are gonna do what free people do,it is your choice to go or not
I have been to Sturgis twice for the rally and stayed two other times on the way to/from MT. The locals who I spoke with seem to appreciate the rally for the most part. I am near Louisville , Ky so the Derby ruins traffic here. Sturgis cops keep the traffic flowing to mine eye. SD state police are helpful as are Sturgis PD. I did have a interesting run in with who I believe to be an undercover cop who in Murdoo at the Pontiac Diner, he put me hip to the sex trafficking, that was 2016 and then I saw the arrests a year or so later. I rode out alone. Bizarre.
I am not big on rallies either, but for Sturgis I would have to go to the pre rally week because most of the businesses I want to visit are only open short periods during the year.

I don’t know a single business that doesn’t want people to attend. Except for medical, law enforcement etc. Some of the money may leave but 99% of the tax revenue doesn’t.
I'm glad a bunch of people don't come. I have tons of fun before, during, and after the rally. Sturgis makes their money off the venders fees! If your not doing anything wrong you don't have to worry about who is or isn't a cop. It's all on you and you alone. It's your choices! You have to live with them.
I live in Belle bout 30 mins from Sturgis and seems like all of this side of the state is filled with em I like it but a lot of bad riders cutting people off and stuff
Bro I watched about 2 hours of some channels videos. And if I didn’t see 25 people slam on their front brake and almost nose that mfr into the pavement. I was thinking the exact thing you said. Plus the prices are fucking ridiculous. I’m good you keep that 10 dollar shot
I love what you just spoke about. I worked in deadwood some years ago and the the entire black hills turns into.a circus full of clowns you know nothing about. I would never attend another rally again
It's sad but your pertty close to what a lot of people are saying now days. I went to Sturgis fist time in 2008 and every year since. I've seen the changes. I refuse to pay the prices so go and still enjoy but don't do any gathered rides and only early or late and then use caution for animals.
@@edwardfaris8516 I watch the UA-camrs covering Sturgis & it’s very sad to see what has happened to it… one Karen on main st was stressed out @ brushing pass a trash can cos it was dirty & too many flies I told her it’s bike week what were you expecting 😂

I think I'm gonna learn to re-sole boots next year so I can make a killin' on all the foot-draggers & duck-walkers😂
It's a lost form now days. We had a cobbler in my tiny town growing up.
I had a friend that was a cobbler. He loved it. He had to go into construction because there isn't much of a call for them these days.
@@BrianTurnbo I would imagine so, thanks Brian
Was in Sturgis 5 years ago the second week of September, great roads and nobody there, my type of riding.
As a Sturgis resident, well said brother

Right on my friend tell it like lt is 👍
I’m new to riding just started riding in June. Was thinking it’d be cool to go to a sturgis rally one day, but after seeing this I don’t think I will

If I ever get a Harley, Sturgis would not be on my bucket list. I'd rather ride out to visit a place such as Mount Rushmore or the Grand Canyon.😊
You don't need a Harley Togo to Sturgis or the rides you mentioned. Just go! It's all good. Many non Harleys go to Sturgis every year.
Could NOT agree with you more!
Depends on how much you like people, me not so much. 😂
8 dollar beer on main street. Fuck that
That sounds like good advice..... I'll consider it...
Hey Boss, I sent you a message on Tik Tok, figured I'd follow up here.
I’m going to go one day but not during the rally. Lots of cool places to visit, without the crazy crowds.
Smart.

What’s wrong with cops?
They are allowed to lie to you, but you can't lie to them. That's enough for me to not like that company.
