We have been using the same outhouse since 1967, we keep a bucket of wood ash next to the hole, every time you dump you dump a cup of ash on it. Also we have a hand stitched cover made out of red squirrel hides to use during the winter. Great video!
We have since added a wood stove to our camp so we will be using ashes too. Squirrel hide sounds luxurious! KPO
How big is the hole that you dig?
love your reading material! Nugent and Favre!
40 pound bag of lime is about 6 bucks from the big box stores. 5 gallon bucket with a lid for storing it, an old cup WITH A HANDLE, and a note on the wall "DROP ONE CUP LIME POST DUMP". Check out my privy and outdoor shower on my channel.
I added insulation and siding on the inside of mine, but great tip about the baking soda. I had been using saw dust, but will add this too! Having lived in the Yukon for a while I already knew about using the foam board as a seat in the winter!
G, insulation would be great. I have been known to light a propane heater in the outhouse for 10 minutes before use. Also ashes from the wood stove work good down the hole. At the time of this video we hadn't installed the wood stove yet. Hey thanks for adding in, KPO.
We kept a 50 lb iron block on our seat cover when leaving for the week. We kept our toilet paper in a ton can with a lid so mice could not get at it to chew up and we had really fun and funny items in plastic tacked on the walls to read and entertain us. Our family used that outhouse from 1963 until 1974 when dad sold the farm. I was a year old in ‘63, so they had a little potty chair indoors for me. I never thought anything bad about making the trek down to the outhouse. Later in life, I bought rural property and it had an outhouse. Same thing! Now my next adventure...you guessed it. I will be digging out my outhouse hole in the next couple weeks. By the way, I read where the moon on the door signified “ladies”, and a star = “men”. Later it just dropped to unisex and the moon remained because of obvious reasons.
Yes we have since added a tin for the T.P. Thanks for adding in those memories, KPO.
The only other thing I would add to the outhouse would be some handicap rails to help some people with weak knees the ability to get up off of the potty a bit easier. Oh and the tip about the T.P. is dead on!
Ray, that's a good idea. Thanks for adding in. KPO
This dude makes my day.
Michael, now you've made my day, thanks. KPO
Don't throw chemicals in for the smell. Use natural absorbents to cover the waste such as straw, sawdust/chips, dry leaves. You want to promote composting and not a smelly cesspit of dead material.
Dirt!
Would you be able to answer some questions for me? 1. How deep and wide is the whole suppose to be? 2. How do you empty it or dispose of it one it's full? And if the grid is doen and you can't call a truck out.
We dug about 4 feet down. We don't use it enough to fill it. It just turns to compost. Others who have filled theirs seem to just dig a new hole and move the outhouse over it.
@@KnettersPracticalOutdoors Thank you so much for getting back to me! The information is very helpful. Much appreciated.
I put a 4" vent pipe with solar power fan keep lid down.
Also use a metal mail box to store t.p. no mice.
Thanks for adding in Steve, KPO.
also you can use ashes out of the wood burner or fire ring to keep the smell down. Make sure they are cool and just dump some down the hole.
James, I will definitely try that this deer season. Thanks KPO
Use Perahna brand RV tank ensigns for biodegrading and odor.
Add vent stack and an RV draft cap. These turn with wind and cause a vacuum.
cool
i loved this man! great stuff
Glad you enjoyed it!
In Sweden Scandinavia we use Sawdust to reduce the nice flower smell :)
Thanks for sharing!
Ya may not get them as an endorsement HIGH LEVEL of RESPECT for telling the TRUTH I subscribe for that reason !!!
THANK YOU !
Welcome to the channel! I try to keep it fun, KPO.
It was a joke…
put lime down the hole and a vent stack out the back, you will never know it is an out house.
Matthew, thanks for adding in and thanks for watching, KPO.
Legit?
Matthew Prestine really? How much? I’d like more information on this.
How do you vent an outhouse ??
@@primalfury2011 All I did to vent mine was cut a 4" hole through the back wall, about halfway between the bottom of the wall and the seat level. Take 8-10" of 4" ABS drain pipe, stick a 90degree elbow on it, add however much more 4" ABS you need to get it above the roof line.
Back side of my outhouse faces the sun most of the day, so the black pipe helps create an updraft most of the summer.
Looking for a 4" solar fan or wind-driven turbine fan for the long cold winters out here on the Raggedy Edge.
Happy poopin' :D
I keep all supplies in metal ammo cans.
Nothing can chew through them.
Great idea! KPO
Reading material should you run out of film for the brownie?
LOL!
Pro Tip:
Invest in an old person portable toilet and just take the tray out so the shit goes straight through. Just dig a hole and bury when done. The one I have is foldable so it’s easy to pack to camp etc. the first year I brought it the guys made fun of me until I let one of them barrow it now we all have one. It sure dose beat just squatting over a hole. In the mornings I just take it and find a nice secluded spot and take my shit as if I was at home.
Thanks for adding in, KPO.
How deep is the hole. Must be 5-6 feet? Lots of great tips here. RV holding tank deodorizers , foam seat, tp in tin cans ,, a vent pipe from above roofline to where?
I think about 5 feet. We dug it 20 years ago and it's got many left, KPO.
Dave Thanks.. love the foam seat idea. and yes, close that lid and door. and the lil racoon in the pooper rescue... while yea, probably a life changing experience.. ya lets just not ..lol Jimmy in AZ
Thanks for watching guys, KPO.
Good vid Dave.
Glad you liked it, KPO.
excellent advice!
Thanks for watching Jet, KPO.
Is anyone else sitting on the toilet watching this?
How do you clean it out if it starts to get full?? Can I pour a few gallons of water and toilet deoderizer as well??
For the amount we use it, it will probably never fill up. It composts quicker than we fill. Or at least we might only lose an inch of depth a year but that's just a guess. I know some camps that have to shovel it out periodically or some camps will just move it over a new hole. Water would help settle everything in the hole to maximize hole depth. One thing we have been doing since this video is putting the wood stove ashes down the hole. That works pretty good for the smell. Thanks for watching, KPO.
In you're open pit toilet, use a little scoop of lime after poopy time.
No order no flies. Age 65.
nice
Nice video. I was wondering what is the best remedy for a smelly outhouse. I'll try the baking soda. How cold does it get where you are? I've never heard of using styrofoam on the toilet seat. Cheers!
Baking soda or wood fire ashes. It commonly gets 10 - 20 degrees F during deer season. Sometimes it will get below 0 F. The styrofoam helps a lot.
LOL good sound advice my friend. LOL
Hey John thanks a lot. KPO
You know I’m in an odd frame of mind when I’m watching a video about our houses when I don’t have one
Well, hopefully it was fun anyways! KPO
I got a shitty olfactory (there's a pun in there somewhere) sense. I would love it if my sense of smell could notice a miniscule 5% decrease or increase of pleasant or not-so-pleasant aromas.
Yes, adjustable smelling sense would be perfect! Thanks for the input.
Does it have to be a deer camp? Do they work in a regular camp? 😭👍
Yes, these work at regular camps! LOL, but you might not have that scent killer around and you might not be on that steady diet of beer and curled meat at a regular camp! Thanks for watching Pam, KPO.
Add a 3-4" vent from the pit to above the roof line, screen the top and paint it black so it wil draw and odor problem will be athing of the past! Start using lack lime instead of baking soda! You want a high PH and baking soda will low it!
Correct! Correct! and Correct! Thanks for watching, KPO.
Thats it Buddy.
Wood ashes are recommended as they are pro-decomposition but slightly less effective in controlling the odour than lime, but lime halts decomposition.
Ty for the tips, I have a campground booked for a week and was thinking it's worth my while to clean the outhouse on day 1. Last time i camped it was stinky, fly infested because window-lickers leave the seat up and shit stained near the top of the hole i guess someone had projectile diarrhea.
The beer and meat made me laugh, I haven't had either in 2 years and my shits might stink but they're rarely messy. Is baking soda safe for every septic system?
Not sure, we only use it in our pit toilet.
See you pick that sent mover from the wrong shelf, right next to it was the stink remover.
I'm not sure what you mean in the comment, but I like the screen name, KPO.
@@KnettersPracticalOutdoors The name just came to me.
Haha ! I like the diet comments
thanks
Also, have plenty of good reading material!
BCDWALLEYE, you saw the awesome reading stuff in the vid. Thanks for the comment. KPO
Use sawdust or wood shavings
Good idea, thanks for watching, KPO.
Oh since your thinking super charged scent killer won’t endorse ya your going for Scott toilet paper aye. Haha
I'm hoping to be the Scotts TP spokesperson, LOL. KPO
Nice
Thanks Ralph.
Fresh scented bleach down the hole. Only gets used during deer season, so 2 gallons is more than enough
j bair, sounds good...…………………….probably smells good too! Thanks for the add in, KPO.
thanks
I don't know why but I always picture an outhouse as literally just a room with a hole cut in the middle for you to sit on or squat over to take care of business, like it doesn't look like a sear whatsoever
Thanks for adding in, KPO.
How about using the deodorizer and break down solutions for RV's? Its just a thought, but it may help
We have been using the ashes from the wood stove lately. That seems to work pretty good also, KPO.
@@KnettersPracticalOutdoors , yeah it is charcoal so it would make a good filter
I'm glad I finally learned how to go 💩.
LOL!
Worse than a raccoon is a porcupine in the hole!
TRUE!
What an extreme Canadian accent lol
Actually Upper Peninsula of Michigan, but we're just across Lake Superior from Canada. Thanks for watching, KPO.
@@KnettersPracticalOutdoors oh cool haha
Ha ha ha! 😂
Hey, glad you enjoyed the video! KPO.
What did I do in life to wind up here ? 🤦👀
I hope something good, KPO.
sulfur down the hole
Thanks for watching! KPO
I'd rather shit in the woods then deal with cleaning that thing. Watch your step .
Cool
Use a mr heater fire up when u wake everyone takes a shyt and is toasty also had an old hunter die on the throan my first yr
Great advice!
Why am I here
Because of your undying interest in outhouses? KPO
