- Exhumation of 25 German soldiers from a forgotten field cemetery on the eastern front. Most of the soldiers still had their identification tags. Several bodies displayed signs of medical treatment, such as the presence of splints or of tourniquets on fractured limbs. 14 of the 25 bodies had been buried in coffins. One amputated leg was also found with the bodies. Also found were one half body, one severely mangled body, a wedding ring, a campaign ring, a death head ring, shrapnel fragments, condoms, coins and buttons. The exact location of the cemetery was found thanks to an elderly period witness.
The point of the excavation was to recover these bodies buried in unmarked graves, to identify them, to rebury them in an official German war cemetery, and to inform the relatives of the soldiers of the location of the bodies.

In 1995, the body of an American pilot whose P-47 was shot down in in the spring of 1945 was returned for burial in the Yarmouth, Maine. He was an only child whose parents never learned how and where he died. The grief of the woman he was engaged to and of his surviving friends was as raw as if he had been killed the day before. Distant relatives born long after the war traveled to the funeral. It's a small town, and many residents attended out of respect, as did many veterans and active duty military personnel from the area. Each of the men buried in that field mattered, and even 80 years later, there will be people who will grieve for them. Even their former enemies see only young men who died painful deaths in a wasteful and tragic war.

What are you on about? Every item has its own bag and number. We dug every one but the first one by hand. We used the excavator cca 10cms from the top of the coffins but some were more shallow than the other. Also what valued items could i get from graves? Rusty and oxidised medals? Cmon please.

I would like to see how you would do it, with time barrier and pressure from the owners of the fields and such.

There a documentary on UA-cam called “what happened to U boat U55” it’s a U boat that mysteriously sank once they located it they found it was hit with a underwater mine. They took a former crew member down who served on U55 with his friends but wasn’t on the U boat at the time it sank as he was sent off for Kriegsmarine officer training on land. They took him down at 96 years old in a mini sub and when he seen the U boat he said “my friends are all in there” and just burst into tears. After all those years it was still raw in his mind. So sad they had to take him back up to the surface as he was so upset.

As a war veteran, when seeing these men laying in their natural state, these men, regardless of religion, culture, political ideals, ambitions, regrets. This is the final resting place free from this material word. At the end of the day, the only people who will remember you in a war zone are your family and these people who sacrifice their energy and time to dig and uncover what happened to these men. From dust we came into the Earth and dust we shall return. I think about a lot of the people I have seen who have died in the war and question what is it all for.. offensive wars just waste human lives for the sake military objectives, men on paper.... this is the truth of war, there are no heros, only the dead, who are burried under the ground and these people work tiresly to show us the real consequnce of what happens in war.

@@WrenchWhacker ---- The medical care in many of these field hospitals located in or near active areas, was not for the very seriously injured. I had read in several sources that such seriously injured were left unattended on a floor mat with a loaded pistol nearby for them to use on themselves when they realized the greatly overworked doctors would never get to them.

Hearing that the bodies get damaged by the excavator is weird at first, but then you realize, the important bit is that the bodies are exhumend and returned to their home country and be buried there. Some of the dogtags might even reveal the fate of soldiers previously merely considered MIA, cause the reports of their deaths were lost in the latter days of the war.
It's a very good thing that people look for lost mass graves.
Just out of curiosity (and mind you, I ask this out of total respect), why were a lot, if not most, of the skeletal remains, purplish in color?

Yea I thought the same thing after they made a few comments about excavator causing some damage but then came to the same conclusion as you. Watching the whole video the bodies were fairly deep and they did a ton of digging by hand once they got to closer to the bodies. Hard work with little thanks. I hope some people find some peace learning the fate of loved ones or family their parents/grandparents talked about.

My grandfather was a Polish NCO who saw action against the Germans and refused to join the Communist party after they "liberated" Poland.
I think, most would understand If I, an American and descendant of a Polish soldier and whose mother's family were American combatants, was gleeful at such a fate of those men.
Yet, I feel sadness. Perhaps, because as you pointed out, their progeny never knew them.
The other half of the ID tag would of been kept on record and sent home for notification purposes ?!

I was thinking the same thing. But I guess if no one else is willing to find them, identify them, and give their families closure, then it’s better than nothing.
They really should have done this without the heavy equipment though.
People like these guys have brought so many closure. Shortly after the Berlin wall came down my mother who is in Canada got a call thanks to a group like these guys her brothers body was found in a mass grave in a park in East Germany. There were several body's all shot in the head. My Oma died long before her son was found but both his sisters were so thankful to the guys finding him and giving them closure. Thanks to all groups that have and are doing this.

The Death Head ring was given to this soldier personally by Heinrich Himmler. Maybe that can be given to the family for them to display and be proud of.

My grandpa was a German fighting on DDAY. My family tried to talk to him but he was full of regret and guilt possibly of fighting on a losing side. He'll always be my hero though. Our family keeps his uniform locked away in a special box when he passed away. Love you Grandpa H

I tend to agree with those who say that this recovery of deceased German soldiers was performed in the best ways available to those willing to do such work. War is awful, and its effects are lasting. If any German families were able to recover the remains of their lost loved ones, I count this as a success. I saw no disrespect here at all.

It was a bad time in general. Lots of men were entangled in something they hardly comprehended. I know your Grandpa was a good person, because he showed remorse, (whether it was warranted or not.) Should circumstance leave you unable to care for it, make sure you donate that remarkable artifact to a museum.
Whatever side of war you fight doesnt define the man you are. It is despicable when people think the Nazis were just bad people, they were people and were no better or worse than an American soldier or any soldier.

@New York to UK My Grandpa was able to move to the US years after the war even though he was German soldier. He met my Grandma during her studies abroad. He found the Lord and was baptized after their wedding. He always said he regret fighting for the German Army and almost burned his uniform but my Grandma and Mom saved his uniform. I have no idea what we will do to his uniform in the future. He found peace I think on his last day.

I appreciate the dignity you afforded these men. The suffering was incredible, the shortages of pain medications, antibiotics were not available, and orthopedic surgery was not what it is today. A simple fracture could easily spell death or amputation.
It is difficult to imagine how any sort of surgery could even exist without antibiotics.
Yea it was a bit rough doing field surgery’s when a million russian soldiers where breathing down your neck followed closely by the NKVD , that’s a scary hit parade coming to town & certainly a tough environment to do delicate surgical procedures on pulverized limbs .

Many, many, many German troops and the people in Germany believed in the base beliefs of the Nazi party. It's kind of how they got into power and took over.

Public citizen (eg. a non-veteran) and FULLY appreciate/understand/digest,...that these soldiers were LAWFULLY & LEGALLY....called to bear-arms against the Allies,...by their RESPECTIVE LEADER....(unfortunately,...that was Hitler). It's a WELL KNOWN and WELL DOCUMENTED FACT,...that outside of only the highest of military/political figures in Germany at the time, virtually NONE of the...."grunts" and/or average German soldiers, were aware of the atrocities which were unfolding in the various camps around Germany & German-occupied regions. I said I know this is weird (our grandfather was a Polish soldier) and I told him how this German soldier could tell that a particular Englishman who was part of the wave that overrun their position was filled with rage and hatred for him. I told him how this man's storie left me rooting for them. And my brother, seemingly with no second thought, said, of course, they were facing overwhelming odds.

I agree with Sarah's comment: there is a powerful distinction between 'grave robbers' and historians. These people were careful (well, careful as can be with the gear they've got - excavators aren't gentle, but only hollywood archaeologists have radar screeners) with the artifacts, and more notably recorded their original location, condition, contents and the process of digging them up. This shares the fate of those soldiers with everyone in the world, makes them the real people they once were (like the condom guy). Grave robbers DO NOT record their excavations, they don't care about the history and they're just in it for the paycheck. So be respectful, these guys do good work all over the world, no matter the war, disaster, or even normal fate forgotten grave residents may have had. Keep up the good work, people - interesting to watch history unfold in ways we never learned back in school. [Edit] Also the teaching aspect - I never knew the old German dog-tags were serialized by rank (order of receipt), so I learned something new today.

Nazis murderous monsters, there is nothing to be troubled over them. It is great to look at broken bones, at least they suffered before death. It is a pity that we did not know what they were. One in 100% was from the SS unit, it tells us the signet ring with the inscription of the skull.
On the film, you can see the coffins, so officers were. Everything indicates that the hospital was close. People here not have, what was the SS and what terrible crimes he did. People did not know that SS and Wermacht were mass exterminating civilians only because they considered them to be lower than themselves. As everyone was from the SS, murdered women and children. They were monsters and they have no dignified burial or compassion. Leave the bones or throw them out on the trash, that's all. Do not glorify the murderers, do not sympathize with them. At least they felt the pain of the coming death. I hope that they have suffered a long, long time. They deserved themselves.

This is by far the most interesting exhumation video I’ve seen. Now these soldiers will be interred in a German war cemetery with their brethren.
They're lucky. Think of all the people they "cleansed", piled into heaps, and cremated. Interesting for the purposes of archaeology and history and for just appreciating the cost of war and the loss of a fellow human being, but we can't forget the context of all the lives these people may have taken themselves and the ideas they fought for.

I'm fascinated how these sites are found in such nondescript looking fields that look like any field from anywhere in the world. It gives an idea of the magnitude of the war. I imagine all of the unknown graves still out there and the graves that will likely never be found. I would like to know what kind of research goes into finding likely spots to search. That must be an enjoyable part of the process.

Anyone that finds war glamorous should watch this video first. There was a lot of suffering surely endured by this small group of twenty-six men. Even a leg injury is devastating. 70-85 million deaths are estimated for WW2. Unbelievable.

Obviously a lot of people have never operated an excavator. I’ve seen operators that can excavate an egg out of dirt without breaking the egg, but that’s probably one out of a thousand or more. When your digging, you have no idea whether a water/gas/electric line or a body is until its uncovered. Especially with bodies where the jaw may be sticking up a 1/2” above the rest of the skull, or a knee is 3” above the rest of the leg. You can’t see where the things your trying to uncover is. There’s no camera at the teeth of the bucket, or the edge on a flat edge instead of teeth. And actually, I’m impressed the way the bodies were laying there was not more damage to them. I can almost guarantee you, every time he did a little damage, he winced and felt a tug at his heart for doing so. None of it was intentional

Dallas DautermanDallas thats fine. Have you ever operated an excavator, a backhoe? I have. I used them to uncover water and Ed electric lines. You learn that if you dig into them, you just cost your company mite money and more time, which is even more money.
These soldiers they are digging up, were never truly buried by their families. They had no body to bury. And when you just “dig” because you believe there are bodies, or what is left of the bodies, and you dig with no care, those bodies belonged to someone. And that someone had family and friends, other soldiers that fought and died with them.
I don’t know where your from, but I live in the US. Before working at our state park, I was in law enforcement for more than 35 years. When we had a fire and people perished inside, we just didn’t go in with shovels and start scooping through the ashes just because we could. We carefully moved ashes and burnt material, sometimes with our hands, because we knew that body had people connected to it. Same way in police work, if you have reason to believe a body has been buried, you just don’t take shovels and stand on the blade just because that’s how you normally dig, or even with an excavator, without abandonment, just because you have a very powerful machine that can scope up big buckets of soil. You dig carefully so you don’t ruin evidence, but even more so, the dignity of the person your trying to find, to dig up, because you want their family, who likely someone will want to see the body, and can you imagine finding out a family member of yours that was ripped apart by a machine, just because someone didn’t care? You would be livid.
When 9/11 happened, and after a certain time, there was little left to be identified, the biggest thought people had, was if I get something, that really is so little and not even recognized, the loved ones were concerned that other people’s remains might be intermingled with their loved ones remains.
What these people did was inexcusable. Now when the remains are given to the family, they can tell if the skull was broken long ago, or recently. The break or the cave in of the soldiers skull will have a different color than where it was in contact with the dirt, and where rodents and bugs had eaten the skin and muscle off the skull. I don’t know about you, but I first off should be upset if I saw that, even more so if I saw the breakage or cave in of my sons or brothers skull, and then watched this video. As someone who worked digging as I said, accidents happen. Sometimes you can’t see where your digging. You’re supposed to have a person watching for signs of what you’re digging for, which they did. You don’t just out the teeth of the bucket into the ground, pull back in the lever to make the bucket dug in more and using the other level to pull the bucket back towards you with abandonment. That’s exactly what they did. And when they did, they broke bones, they caved in skulls, and intermingled what remains there was.
I’m glad they cared to search for the soldiers remains. It will bring closures to many families, and what weapons and other gear, both personal and owned by the military branch, will tell stories that may not have been known.
As a father of a son that joined the military and fought in a war in Iraq, and was buried and later the military found out where and dug him up, and did what they did, I would be upset. Yes I would be heartened they found him so we could bring closure to our family, but still, I would be upset if his body was mangled because they didn’t take care in making sure his body wasn’t desecrated even more.

I've been to Italy three times and on my first visit at age nine, in the cemetery in my mother's village (tiny place) I found a grave of 3 unknown German soldiers who had been buried there. From memory, I believe it was from WWI, also my mum was born in 1935 and doesn't remember any burials of that kind in her youth. Anyway, each time I visited, I always went back and put some flowers on the grave. You don't see things like that in Australia, and it seemed so sad, they were far from home, their families never knew what happened to them etc. I wanted to leave a little something as another human and I've never forgotten it (There are also so many war memorials in Italy, the loss of life is staggering!) Thanks for putting up with my rambling memory!☺️

Theres tens if not hundreds of thousands of bodies buried on many fronts from ww2 that many families never knew exactly what happened to there loved ones. This is to all the idiots making jokes about finding condoms among the bones. Condoms had many uses to a soldier in the field not the least of which was to cover the rifle barrel to keep dirt out. The condoms can be used as a tourniquet if needed and to keep things waterproof like matches. Another use was to blouse uniform pants above the boots. My dad was in the 101st Airborne and he told me this years ago when I asked how they kept their uniforms looking so neat.
These soldiers fought and died for what they believed in and some were forced to fight. When you have gone for months on end slogging through cold, heat, mud and rain where someone is trying to blow you up, shoot you or starve you to death, then you may laugh but I doubt you will want to do so. Even though some soldiers may have used condoms for what you said, this were exceptions. They were surely not given to soldiers to cover rifles, but to rape women!

My father was a decorated American solder and became a POW of the Germans. My mom is a 1st generation American born citizen of German parents. She lost a cousin who was a Panzer Grenadier on the west bank of the Dniepr River. He was from a good family, brought up with good values and was a human being just as much as the Russians he fought against. Both Russians and Germans need to be found and re buried in a cemetery with an identity.
Dont listen to these assholes. You guys are doing a great job recovering bodies and maybe bringing them home to their families. Peoppe expect you to have endless resource and money to do this for 12 months. If the bodies left here some are being destroyed by farm machinery. The most important is the identification and burial in a proper site. Some people just love to criticize and complain. Dont see them out doing this work. Good job guys,sad to see
I did NOT see any body reburying ANY skeletal remains from this grave site. For ALL we know they are just thrown away into the garbage once the valuables are all robbed away. I find this whole video very upsetting. The German Government should step in and do something about this trade in German Soldiers grave artifacts. It is an evil trade.

What family's ww1 was more then 100 years ago. No one in there family's are still alive. Even there kids are all dead. Maybe even there grand kids and if not there probably in there 80s or older.
