Yes, cats can figure out how to open things. Especially if they watch a human do it. And if they are motivated. This was a motivated cat who had watched the human open and close the crate/cage.
Has more heart, empathy and ubderstanding of another animal's needs than many humans. To keep a dog in a cage for hours is not only unusual where I come from, it's illegal. Most guniea pigs, rats and bunnies have a larger cage than this. Solitary confinement is completely species inappropriate for canids, who live in packs, roaming miles and miles every day.

When camping in a stationary trailer on a small lot, our then fairly new dog used to chew the leash she was tied to outside only to then stay where she was. She just didn't like to be leashed like that. No issue with staying in the same spot.
@@camelopardalis84 my dog is very similar, he's much more stressed when on a leash. I'd let him walk without a leash (he never goes further than ~30ft from me), but where I live dogs are legally required to walk on a leash (excluding dog parks and private property) 🥲

I once had 2 dogs & 2 cats. I worked diligently training my dogs. I have had several cats, but had never tried to train one. However, due to an accident, I realized my cats were watching, listening and learning what I was teaching my dogs. I happened to drop a glass on the floor & it shattered. I told me dogs to stay knowing they would rush over to investigate & likey cut their paws on the broken glass. I expected the cats to run away upon hearing the noise. I immediately told the dogs to "Stop!" Then told them to "Stay". Both dogs obeyed. What I didn't expect was the 2 cats both obeyed me, too. One cat literally stopped abruptly, mid-step, holding her paw in the air and stood as if frozen. I was not surprised at my cats' intelligence. I was surprised that they were watching & learning the commands I taught the dogs. But most surprising to me was that they actually listened & did what I said! I think hearing the urgency in my voice, both the dogs & cats knew I was alarmed, and so they took me seriously and quickly obeyed.
Cats can definitely be trained. It just takes different techniques and time for many of them. My baby is food motivated and can do all things through the power of treats.😅

It’s amazing how the cat watched the whole time to see how it was done. Then after the cat opened the cage, he was looking all around, making sure that was nobody to get him in trouble. Amazing.

I had 2 female dogs, my parents had a male cat. They knew each other. Once, I was visiting my parents, having a bbq at the garage, my girls were in the porch. Suddenly, my eldest saw a mouse. She got up and with all the patience, came out, not even glancing at us, went directly to the yard, found the cat; the cat followed her at his own pace, entered the porch and chased the mouse. They all acted like, "nothing to see here, businness as usual", while all of us (6 adults) watched in amazement.

My chocolate lab/pibble mix came to me knowing the basic commands. A few months later, I was given a 4 month old "outdoor" black lab puppy. I don't keep "outdoor" dogs. They always live in my house and have the yard to play in and do their business. Within a few days, the 4 month old black lab puppy learned from the 2 year old chocolate lab/pibble how to be house broken without any effort on my part! Soon after, I told the 2 year old to *"SIT"* so he could have his treat. The puppy looked over at him and figured out, after ONE TIME, what *"SIT"* meant. Over the 11 years they've been housemates, *they have learned various behaviors from each other,* again, without any training from me! They understand subtle clues (like my putting my glasses on means I'm leaving the room, or picking up my keys means it's time for a car ride) and seem to communicate with each other on an elevated level. Just a look means so much. They're so much smarter than they want us to know! 🤣 And they've trained *ME* to accomodate their every desire! I learn quickly, too!
