  • A pair of F2T Diaphone fog signals were installed in the Duluth South Breakwater Light in 1923. The Coast Guard removed the F2T's in 1968 and replaced them with an FA32 diaphragm horn. After learning that the F2T's previously installed in the Kewaunee South Pierhead Light were available, a local group known as Return Our Old Tone (TOOT) solicited the assistance of diaphone restoration specialist Jeff Laser, and installed them in the South Breakwater Light in 1995. The diaphones continued to operate until 2005, when the Coast Guard solarized the South Breakwater Light and disconnected the city power supply to the pier and reactivated the FA32. Members of TOOT removed the diaphone installation in the fall of 2005.

    Amazing how a sound can instantly bring back memories. Like I'm back laying in bed on a rainy, foggy night, growing up in Lower Chester in Duluth, that low, steady fog horn lulling me to sleep.

    I'm still depressed at this signal being removed. It really was the voice of Duluth. East Enders finally got their way I suppose

    I have always been a fan of lighthouses since I was a kid and have always dreamed of being a lighthouse keeper

      The only lighthouse I could be keeper of is Lizard lighthouse. i spent teenage summer holidays by it. Since my stroke, I've gained the ability to taste, smell and texturize every sound I hear. (sometimes a blessing, sometimes a curse!) this sound smells of sulphur, tastes of hot soft boiled eggs and has a texture of liquid soap to me.

    Diaphones gave lighthouses character. The Beepers that they use today are just boring and sad. Give us the Diaphones back.

      It was recorded on Cassette tape by a gentleman in Duluth around 1998. I received a copy of the tape from Jeff Laser and converted it to digital format.

    That is cool! Love that ambience of it going off. Wonder how far was that recording from the horn itself

      it sounds so cool but it sounds similar like the Diaphone we have In New Milford NJ but a Diaphone is a Foghorn its basically a fog signal for boats and ship around harbors on land Gamewell Diaphones work on principal like on oceans is more for fire calls and noon test

      +Thomas Nativo What about the sort you'd find on an organ?

    • @manga12
      @manga12 7 років тому +1

      ah glad you asked, the diaphone on an organ provides foundation, it uses instead of a slotted piston what is called a pallet that is powered by air, same concept differant configuration, also the symphonic organ was also created by robert hope jones that designed the diaphone as a signaling device, he was canadian, but he is the inventor of both.
