  • So much of a retrievers success and performance in the field comes from the dog trainer. Knowing when and when not to step in plays a huge role and how you do it makes all the difference in the world whether it be in training time or on a hunt.
This week, Josh discusses body posture and whistle work. In your retriever training, you're not asking your labrador to do something, you're telling them to do it. If you want to train your retriever you have to show them you know what you're doing. Along these same lines is a handler's whistle work. Don't over do your volume when the situation doesn't call for it. Reserve the loudest for times when the dog needs it, not when it's nearby. Utilizing these tips will not only make you a better dog trainer/handler, but also your dog a better retriever.

Josh, I learn something new with every video of yours. I'm one that was using probably too loud of a whistle in close distance. Thank you for the help. Do you have a video that you show more on how to whistle train ?

Looking at the possibility of getting a pup from you... my thoughts are that this process could be over the next 2 years... why?.. I’d like to learn as much from you as possible before I start making preparations for the new hunting partner... do you have a complete guide on your recommendations on how to bring a pup along properly for beginners... I have some experience with hunting dog... but it’s limited... willingness to forget about all that to implement your complete approach!
