I think the look on Kai's face was actually disbelief. Kinda like the same look Eren had on his face from Attack on Titan when he refused to believe that Marco was dead after hearing about his fate.

The plot, it just is written so amazingly. I love character designs and voice actors are doing such an amazing job! You just know how to express your beautiful imagination. I need to rewatch previous episodes because there are many things that were hints leading to these situations. Although, there are many mysteries appearing in this series. And that one evil dude that looks similar like Adrian was his true form but he just disguise himself as kai. Y'all can see the difference of Adrian and that dude by the hair (Adrian's more messy), eyes, and earing
