That pumpkin seed fish is adorable. I can't believe I haven't seen that for aquariums! I'd want one. I would expect they get a lot bigger. I always liked Bluegil and Crappie when Bass Fishing with my dad. I was always sad everyone hated them lol. Way cooler and more fun to catch and see than a bass for me. Just not as impressive to brag about lol.
I would much rather catch a pumpkinseed fish or hybrid /sunfish than a bluegill or bass. It is far more exciting to pull in some beautiful colors in my opinion than saying "fighting a bass" is hard lol...we are used to 40lb salmon out here...so a 4 lb fish is pretty laughable comparably . And the pumpkinseeds get 4 to 6 inches usually...not very large honestly

We had a Bluegill derby in the town I grew up in. All catch and release, prizes included heaviest catch (weight) and biggest individual one caught. Loved those every summer. Won it once for my age group when I was a kid. Fun times. Cookouts and contests, games and stuff.

They have been here for 100+ years though, so I call them "local" not native... which is true of so many trout, bass amphibians, gray squirrels, starlings etc. What I'm not sure of, is what year the first northern pike minnows entered the Puget sound/Columbia River basin, as well as carp and channel cats. Most bass and trout other than cutthroats and kokanee are also historically not native, but I've found accounts going back to the 1880s talking about hiking fingerling trout up to lakes in the foothills surrounding Seattle and mining towns... I'd love to find a mapped progression of habitat expansion by species, if you know of such a thing?

Dude, NICE. I live in the area between Mill Creek and Everett in Washington state, found a run off ditch type pond thing in an old Buffalo field next to an Albertsons. I find lots of crayfish there and have found some sort of juvenile pan fish there last year. I'll have to scope out these spots you've shown, pumpkin seed fish are so cool.
@@Fishtory Must have been interesting and a little saddening to see the area develope overtime into what it is now, I moved here in the mid 90's and used to have a green belt in my backyard. I would collect green tree frogs for fun back there and then let them go into the forest at the end of the day, now the green belt has been chopped down and there are multiple large sprawling subdivisions and neighborhoods and I hardly ever see tree frogs. However over the years I noticed a huge influx of Northern red-legged frogs which as a young teen in the 2000's I thought they were super cool, but now I miss those little tree frogs. I saw your stream on collecting at Ronald Bog and the Twin Ponds while I was out fishing with my net too (great minds fish alike lol). It looked really fun so I too plan on going out now with a camera to do something similar, maybe I'll stumble into you while fishing haha that would be rad. I used to work at a Greener Today on aurora a couple years ago and I always passed Ronald bog going to work, I always wondered if anything lived in there and was shocked you found fish in it.

Do y'all have reticulate sculpin up there? I can never tell whether it's a banded sculpin or reticulate, unless it's in a ditch, then they're almost always reticulate.
Yes it's in the state, but I think farther south *most the time*... but it's one of those really specific ones, where you have to count fin rays to be sure, since the phenotypes overlap
It's fun catching and keeping some species of native fish. They are hardy and free.😀
