Good job on the new antenna install . For local operations , height makes a difference. Just heard you under the weather, take it easy and wishing you a speedy recovery. 9CT376 in Ontario, CA . 73s
Just heard you are under the weather Shane. Take it easy and rest up. Get well soon from Tim CT2116 on behalf of myself and all on the Thursday night Southern net 73.
Hey Shane. I hope this message finds you well and on the mend. Take good care my friend and take it easy. You gotta make a full and complete recovery so we can enjoy many more great videos. God bless you and yours.
I've got the exact same antenna as you have the Sigma Venom Hy-Gain Silver Rod and I have had mine around a year or two and it works brilliant on the 10 and 11 meters and I can also tune it down on the HF bands as well and I can go on 15 17 and the 20 meters and the SWR is always 1.0 right through the entire bands every time which is good and I've spoken to Canada on the 20 meters and Brazil South America on the 10 meters just on the 10 Watts so I'm just letting you know that you can use a lot more HF bands on your new antenna and you'll get some really good results so I don't know if you know about all of this but I'm just letting you know that's all OK. Thanks and best 73's for now cheers. Stephen M3SNV 73's.
Just got hold of a new Venom 5/8 rod and assembled it to the marks on the poles. SWR well over 2.5 touching the red. Checked plugs, coax etc - no shorts. Tried lengthening and lowering from the bottom section - very little joy. God knows what’s wrong with it. :(
Got the same problem and asking around others have the same problem too.. nobody seems to have a solution, if you have found one please let me know.. also ive noticed that others who have this problem all have the same swr reading.
@@4444panther I binned it in the end and gave it away - wasted far too much time on it. Ended up getting a Sirio Gainmaster and put that on 2x scaffolds. SWR spot on after a bit of measurement of the lengths. The only way I could get the Venom down to a reasonable level was to shorten it about 2 feet!! I also earthed it - behind our shed is a 4 foot copper rod in the ground, so I ran an earth wire from the antenna to that. Helped a bit. Which is crazy really. The top section was literally half its length to make the needle come down. Not good! I don't remember my original silver rod from the 80s having bad SWR like this one. I did a video on CB before Xmas, you can see the Gainmaster in there somewhere! ua-cam.com/video/KG2jDr7u3Lc/v-deo.html
@@4444panther in all honesty I think it’s the same old story - you get what you pay for. The Venon was about £30. The Gainmaster over £100. I think the Venom is a cheaply knocked together thing with little attention to quality and tuning. The coil in the base is cheap nasty thing too. I pulled it out to check it was connected properly - it was.
@@TheRetroShed Thank you for your prompt reply.. What a coincidence i gave up on mine too, although i still have it but its been sitting in my shed since i too bought a Gainmaster 5/8th wave to replace it and reading up before purchase they don't need any adjustment for swr.. I know they say the GM swr is preset but i still have slightly high swr readings at 1.7. When erecting the GM i followed the paperwork and as illustrated measured the sections at 1800mm as instructed then let the top section drop in 15 mm as instructed.. is this how you put yours together ?? My Gm is set like this, my apartment is ground floor with two TK brackets on the wall and the GM sits on top of a ten foot steel pole.. the red coil is not quite clearing the roof but clears the gutter by around four feet, do you think if it was elevated higher my swr would come down.. for reference i use 213u military grade coax and my run is short at thirty feet long to my radio. I am thinking of buying an easy up steel telescopic mast.. they are pretty expensive so i didn't want to throw expenses on something that may not help. Any advice would be really appreciated, thank you.
@@TheRetroShed Seems this venom antenna has many similarities with problems like other people have.. my swr only dropped to just outside the red and the top section was almost all the way in to the next section and only sticking out the top by six inches, mine was the venom 5/8th wave.. i struggled endlessly for weeks before i gave up.. then i paid £130 for the Gainmaster.
Shane where did you buy your Shelley Clamps from ? They look ideal for my Antron 99 getting fixed onto cast iron clothes poles (Remember those ?) and may I ask if I worked wire between the other three clothes poles would that act as a ground plane ? thanks in advance.
TRISTAN LODER hi mate you can get them on eBay between 12 and 18 quid mate I need to buy some more ,, just type Shelly clamp and they will appear cheers mate

Make a small mark with a needle file where the black lines are .. in that way when they wear off you will still have marks!
