There were also prizes for the most original, beautiful and weird crafts I remember
yeah that makes sense
And alot of people just wanted to be on TV😂.
Yes multiple different prices not just the fastest time. So some might go for the fastest time price and others go for prices for the looks. As I remember there was even a price for the most unlucky and slowest time in some occasions. So that's why not every design was build to be fast but more for the looks of it.
And it started on June 22, 1973!! still can't belief it!!
Every summer it begins!! Big part of my childhood!!
Reading the subtitles while also watching the show apparently is a skill I never knew I had. We learn this from an young age because we don’t dub the international shows or movies.
Also watch the backwards racing with the DAF cars. Because of the variomatic transmission they could go just as fast backward as forward.
In some cases even faster backwards... they were/are fun cars!
This show used to be very popular here in Belgium (flanders) too. Used to watch it al the time when i was a kid. The first part(tobbedansen) was even filmed in Belgium (berlaare) and the contestants are belgian.😅 Happy new year!!
I looooved Ter land, ter zee en in de lucht back in the days! Nostalgia overload!
i enjoyed it!
Brings me back to childhood!..
This was so much fun to watch. The reason that some contestants put so much work into making something that looked good, is that next to the prize for the fastest contestant, the best looking one also won a prize.
The funniest thing about this show is that the contestants can be divided into two groups: the ones who take it super seriously and who have spent the better part of the year perfecting their contraption, and the dads who decided to participate during a night of heavy drinking at the pub. The latter are funny and are just in it for the lulz "yeah, we're dressed as chickens because we're chicken farmers, wheeeee!" but the first group are really the funniest, because they're at the start explaining all the wind resistance and aerodynamics and laws of gravity, only to sink like rocks in 2.5 seconds.
Also to explain a bit about the fancy ones, there was also a prize for being original/beautiful. So some of them focussed on that (and some others just wanted to be on TV with their fancy looking craft). So either you focus on efficiency or on beauty, it could both get you a win (in those categories).
ok that makes more sense now
The banner at 34:40 says:
No beam too narrow.
No slope too steep.
Maikey keeps it dry.
If everyone tried to win it would probably be incredibly boring!
Aahhh, man.. Childhood memories!
37:37 How you react is exactly why it wouldn't work in the USA.. it would be boring.. just folks going for the fastest time, not for the fun and decorating.. for the participation...
I agree! A lot of people were in it to show their creativity, even if they knew their craft wouldn't perform well, it looked good and they had fun. That was what the show was about, not winning.
And the beginning he is talking about 40 years of Te Land en te Zee en in de Lucht in 2012. So Red Bull is pretty late.
Hahaha, de zjiepkitten is a carnavalgroup from my home town. Ninof/Nienof/Ninove (Belgium/ east flandres) also the home of Slaghmuylders brewery by the way
This year was it in the Efteling😍😍
The last edition 2024 was filmed at the Efteling😊 At new years day they broadcasting the Winter Edition.
25:14 that cart was definitionaly floating. Safety is #1 on this show and they only do these stunts in sufficiently deep waters to prevent partakers from injuring themselves during a fall.
They make their own boat, some are very serious, some just going for the fun part.
I always loved watching Game Without Borders, a game show with all European countries competing against each other, also very nice to watch. Only it lasts more than an hour and without subtitles
Something from my teenage years in the seventes. Haven´t watched it after. Always great fun, not the least because of the commentary.
There where so many variants, some became popular and where repeated over and over again, some where too dangerous or not as spectacular, or just odd ones they would try once and never do again. I can remember people jumping off a platform and trying to glide as far as they could with self made flying constructions, a raft that had to be 2 by 2 by 2 meter, and that had to fold upwards to reach the bell. The boat launcher from the start of the video was very popular, and so was the small line you had to bike over (its harder as it looks). Some people made pieces of art with strange ways to propel themselves forward, ignoring the time. Most just made 'something', and joined in. Later on, some could produce really fast ones. Brilliant tv, done in all kind of cities, with lots of people watching, hoping that they would end up in the water. Not many accidents happened, I think once a dude broke his leg with a flying machine, and that was it.
29:12 Yep, it's actually considered standard over here in the Netherlands for children to learn to swim as soon as they're able to, i.e. around 5/6 years old, for safety reasons. This is also heavily pushed by government because of the many rivers and canals we have.
I've participated once with my friends...we crashed immidiatly without getting anywhere. But had a lot of fun.
I miss: De Lucht (Sky) "Vlieg er eens uit" The selfmade eehm "Aircrafts" were also a thing in this show.
You will find many of the events from this show nowadays with some Red Bull name event attached to it world wide. It is the American Soapbox idea made into the extreme. Probably the longest running amusement/gameshow on Dutch television ever, it aired the first time only nine months after the first "the Price is Right". There are actually a few people that became national celebrities because of their participation. Most famous and popular host of the show no doubt has been Andre van Duin
Hope you had a great Christmas mate, may 2025 bring you lots of good.
They started to make new show this year. They were recording it in the Efteling.
these games are now published by rtl 4. So it is back on the dutch television for like 8 episodes in a season, and only in the summer
Hi Charlie, I like your content, keep it up mate ;) This is really nostalgic for me, back in the day you had marco barink that always goes for the fastest time and won many times, unfortunate he wasn't in the video but you should see him, his creations were build for fast ringing the bell :P
You got the raison d'etre exactly with 'accessibility'. The point is that every village, sports club or scout pack can have a go! None of it is taken very seriously so it always has a 'village games' feeling. You gotta understand that winning' isn't the point. It's about fun and visuals.
37:22 there where two prices.. Most elaborate, most effort put in to making, and the fastest time..
A new series has started this year and was broadcasted from the Efteling.
let me tell you about oei, oei vogels, Or oops, oops birds. 6:14
Oei is translated in oops, I think that kinda fits the word. .
Oei, oei, birds are migratory birds and only occur in the Netherlands in winter. An important characteristic of these birds are the very short legs and the very long scrotum. When these birds land on the ice, their bals hits the ice and they scream OEI, OEI. Hence the name oei, oei bird.
Nonono.. The Oei oei bird is more accurately transcribed to oof oof bird which is the sound it makes when it crash lands on the ice due to its elongated neck. Of course trampling its own balls doesn't help.
The one with making your own airplane and jump from a high tower(it was somewhere in the 70s) to get as far as possible is my favorite. However, it was probably too much to ask to create a good one. many people jumped off with a bed instead, which became rather boring, going straight down obviously.
This year they organised ik in The Efteling.
20:02 the tractor thing they say "wals" wich means a compactor/roller
dont worry about the function, its for fun... some do it to make the fastest time, others compete for the funniest outfits.. they receive a price also. Its al for entertainment
I used to watch this as a kid. Belgian tv was kinda meh back then (I'm from 1972) and we watched a lot of Dutch tv. This was one of the programs we definitely always watched. It was so much fun to see what people would come up with.
Charlie, you're definitely missing the point of this show when you say that one "is just dumb". The whole show was more about being creative and having fun than winning. This show was about the form, not about the function. But I guess for Americans it's all about who wins... No one who watched it cared who made it. Was it great if they made the bell, yes. But it was so much more fun to see them wobble about on their beautiful crafts and wonder if they were going to keep their balance all the way to the end or if they were going to plunge in the water. It was entertaining and fun, not a sports competition!
After all it was also to have fun 😊😊
24:00 it's translated wrong, spring means jump and schapen means sheep.
Btw they made the stuff with things they have laying around so almost everything was second hand and things you get for cheap. first reaction. Ppl also did it for fun and don't care if they win, its like a club thing and also a stand alone thing, everyone was welcome. Back in the good old days.
Lovely to watch your face, while you watch the program ter land ter zee en in de lucht 😅
No it is from 12 sep 2024 ,it was this year.
Never mind , my mistake.
Omg I forgot about these shows! Many types of challenges...completely ridiculous and fun...an honour for a city when the show came to them...complete nonsens and great on a summer day, drink, food and goofyness...😂
You definitely watched with an American mindset. It is not just about being the fastest.
No, we don't carry cargo on our bikes. Or at least not too much. So also no couches. When we have to transport big cargo, we just use a car.
The best TLTZEIDL (stunt-shows) were "" Flying """( Vlieg er eens Uit (Ter land, ter Zee en in de Lucht) 21-6-1983) and ""Driving in reverse""( Achteruitrijden Ter Land, ter Zee en in de Lucht) 16-8-1983)
It wasnt all about being fastest. Seperate price for the best looking.
In the beginning, Andre van Duin was commenting on it, that was even more fun. ua-cam.com/video/e4fRIDkwHU8/v-deo.html
Wow, Robin really let himself go.
24:09 schapen are sheep.
very = erg very leuk = erg leuk
'heel' can also be used in this context, 'heel leuk' = 'very funny/nice'
Yaaay let's gooo:D
(Another comment for the algorithm) but I hope you had a great Christmas man. Much love to you as always.
Btw this show was a big hit for children growing up, definitely nostalgia for me. Pre-emptive like it is.
Also I still love your pronounciation of Dutch. Even if you don't know what it is supposed to be like, you still do it pretty good!
Thanks for the comment. I had a great Christmas, hope you did as well!
i need to get back on duolingo actually but i have been slacking lol
@@ItsCharlieVest Oh it was great, I need to recover from it for weeks (I ate too much oops):3
@@ItsCharlieVest You're already better at it compared to even some people I know (even some living here as I know many expats lol). You seem to be able to have a sense of the language/sounds, which is an awesome start!
You were trying to pronounce "leuk", which is pretty hard for foreigners. Try to pronounce it as "loyk" not as "loak", it'll be close to how we pronounce it. "A lot of fun" would be "heel leuk": "hail loyk" without stressing to much in the Y
OMG I loved watching this. My childhood came flashing by. We always watched this with the whole family.
Sorry, Sheeps
Brilliant and some older Ter Land ter zee: ua-cam.com/video/S7ipFApsFec/v-deo.html
1979 long before Red Bull copying it.
Dit ruimde lekker het oude autopark op. 🤣
This cleaned up the old car park nicely. 🤣
@@daphnelovesL red bull bestond niet eens in 79
@@racingweirdo-music7438 Maar ze hebben wel het idee gebruikt.
Upload might be bad because some of those videos are very old. A lot of the shown games sadly weren’t continued.
Friesland/Frisia/Fryslân is a northern province with its own language since Frisia is older then the Netherlands and used to stretch along the coast from Zeeland (southern Netherlands) to the middle of Denmark. The flag doesn’t have tulips on it. Those are Lily pads (pompeblêden) that are red for some reason.
The foam is just foam. Stop stressing about it. 😂
“Very” = “erg” in Dutch
@25:00 the water is deep otherwise there wouldn’t be divers. We’re just amazing swimmers and their contraption floats.
Greetings from Frisia, the Netherlands!
Schapen are or is goats
This show started back this year in august with a new season. Its not that good like the old series from 12 years ago
I like your channel, but why do you have that extremely ugly clock. Please take it down.
It's all just for fun.
