My rescue full blood healer has his tail. It's perfect for dusting the coffee table. He wags his tail & dusts for me.

I'm on my second ACD. You are doing the right thing with the pups. Not the easiest dog to raise, in fact probably one of the most difficult. Really good to start them early.
@Sunshine Baker I agree, super smart and eager to please but while they are puppies I find them needing a lot of attention. Their high activity rate is too much for some people. I myself know the time I put into my ACD pup pays off in droves when they are older. Not a dog that can be left to it's own devices the first year unless you want them to pick their own job which you probably won't like.

With the proper environment heelers are probably the easiest and most natural learning dog to raise..in the environment their intended for like farm and open space but their not good town or city dog's and it's not fair to them to be confined in small spaces for long term it's not their nature
I think of raising puppies like raising my kids. Consistency and positive reinforcement. I helped my mom with her dobermans. So much fun.

Great job desensitizing the pups from the beginning!
Desensitizing is our number one priority with all puppies.! I have never had anyone say anything negative about my puppy's once they arrive at their new home. Only positive things such as they are well-rounded and did great in the car.

I had a beautiful cattle dog. They are wonderful, smart, loyal dogs. He was not afraid of anything. However, he needed extensive exercise with me. 3 miles in the morning and 3 miles in the afternoon after work, every day. Then he had a pet door to go outside all day while I was at work. Be ready to be active. Don't buy if you want a lap dog, they are not lap dogs. My was not a chewer, but liked the healthy bones for teething and then as he grew I got him bones to chew. My did nip, but it is natural. He learned no very quickly but still tried to Herd me until he was 1 year old. Then he stopped because he knew I was Alpha.
I got an Australian cattle dog in March. He was 4 months old. He was the most calm of his litter. One sister was very energetic and the other was a little bit skittish. The people at the shelter said they were surprised he was the last of his litter to be adopted.
Same thing with my first heeler courage. She has an old soul.

@@car_editor1016 Yes. Australian Cattle Dogs like to be with their owners all the time. This breed should not be left alone too long. It should live inside with the family and it's owner(s) should be active people who enjoy spending a lot of time outdoors with their dog. A large enclosed backyard is definitely helpful.
These dogs are for people who like spending a lot of time with their dog. They're Velcro dogs. Anyone who tells you otherwise is not putting their dog's well-being first.

It's actually better to not clip the tail! They use it for balance, I've had a few without the tail and watching them work cattle you can really see the difference of self control and the ability to avoid getting kicked and even staying low to the ground and centered. You made a good choice leaving the tail....everyone has different thoughts on things but in my experience with "working dogs" they overall perform better and are more accurate in movement control and speed with the ability to have well balance bc of their tail, I noticed more with younger cattle that are more aggressive and panicky from not being used to the dog's that my dog's with tails were able to avoid kicks or stomping much easier than my dogs without the tail and another thing I really liked is with the tail they were able to stay close and low to the ground much easier and longer directly behind the cows wich I really like. My clipped tail dog's had to lay down more than hunker low to the ground wich put them in more dangerous situations. Idk like I said everyone has different thoughts on things but just with my experience with working dog's I prefer the tail and if you watch dog's work you can see what I mean about the balance, they hold the tail out and slightly up and it definitely makes a difference...to me any way lol
I can't understand why anyone would cut their tails. My 4 year old is a super star when it comes to fetch. The tail is a balance rudder when it comes to turning on a dime. If the tail was really long like on a Boxer I can understand the crop. Not on an ACD.

ACD with no tails in Australia are a special breed, called Stumpies.

How old is the dog? Do you know why it was surrendered. As long as you can offer the dog TONS of mental stimulation and you know what you are doing you should be good. Australian cattle dogs are a very particular breed that enjoy bonding and building a relationship with their human.

Hello! I raise heeler puppies as well and am trying to start training them young. Right now I have a litter that will be 3 weeks old in 2 days. I haven't started any kind of training with them. Do you start your training at 4 weeks? I tried picking up a puppy and flipping him on his back in mid air (for the first time) as you did and he FREAKED OUT. He started fighting trying to flip over... you should have heard his vocal chords. I tried keeping him on his back til he calmed down but he never calmed 😔 He was terrified and I felt so bad. What do you do in this instance?? Like I said, he'll only be 3 weeks in 2 days. He's so strong now, I could hardly keep him on his back. He'll probably be even more uncontrollable in another week. Help!

I wish I would have seen this comment earlier. you can really do this at any age it just takes longer the older they get. but I recommend doing it no matter what age the puppy or dog is.

Deborah Dishington they need a lot of exercise daily. I have a heeler/collie mix and we do 4 mile walks a day split in 2, along with play at the dog park for an hour or so.
Great dogs, as moonbot says, exremely energetic, theese dogs were bred to work on farms,.they need training and daily excercise for life
oh and you know why they are called blue heelers right?? be sure to do your research with this breed, i have owned cattle dogs for decades.......I will just add in Australia i have never heard of the tails being cut off...there are stumpy tail cattles but thats their breed, born like that

I am 59 yo have a 3 yo blue heeler. The image put out is that heelers have to run and the owner has to be a runner or mountain biker. My Amelia sits on the couch with her head in my lap and only chases the ball only as long as she wants. They are hard as puppies becuse they are gallots who scratch you and want your attention all the time, but it is all worth it. I think she is a great dog even for older not cool people...lol.

Oh no!! Australian Cattle dogs have a big personality. Growling and biting at your owner is unacceptable even in play. Have you tried a muzzle grab?
Oof this comment is probably too late but if you got the puppy younger than 8 weeks it may have not learned from its litter and its mom how to bite without so much force, my family was taking care of a friend's dog and I got bit pretty badly, we think it got taken away too early to learn so that may be the issue
They each have their own personality....watch a litter closely....you need to spend shit load of effort into this gorgeous breed and you will not be disappointed....be ,patient....do research and give it all your energy and attention....do not chain them....exercise heaps....after about 4 to 5 years you will not regret it....yes that long....lol.....but the reward of your effort and love will surprise you.....good luck..
our girl came home with us at 8 weeks. very early. milk teeth are really sharp and when she would play with her mouth, it could hurt/draw blood. first time she 'mouthed me' I rolled her on her back and bit down on an ear until she yelped. the bite was slow and gradually increased pressure. these are smart dogs. they get it. never had the issue again. but it IS about teaching them as much as possible in 'their own language'. these dogs will go as much as you want to go. but more than exercise: they are partners. they want to be with you. i took my dog everywhere and worked constantly with her for all her 15 years on training/reinforcing rules. but I never went anywhere without asking if she wanted to come along. she never ever declined the invitation. Loved that dog and she gave me so much more than I gave her.
@@kurtbecker9609 we are building a farm and looking at this breed. We also hike and horse back riding, our area has bears. I am thinking this is the perfect dog for our lives style. We're thinking two is better then one for defense.

Hey mate, unusual to dock the tails. Stumpy tails are a natural trait.

Yes! I personally prefer the bigger cattle dogs I like at least 50 lb :-) so all of our puppies are at least that!
They are working dogs. Dont require a lot of affection, and a college education is wasted on them coz they are already smarter than the average human.

I love your videos. I was told that female blue heelers are lower maintenance and males pee much more in the home than females. Is that true? I’m looking to get one in the next 3 weeks.

The only reason i do not own a male is because i have no way of separating him from my female if shes in heat and im not breeding that cycle.
I personally know several male cattle dogs and i do not see a difference. If you choose not to neuter your dog they have a tendency to mark territory once they sexually mature. Not all males do this but it is a possibility.

You aren’t suppose to hold dogs down, the reason they aren’t “panicked” is because they go into a complete emotional shutdown not because they are calm, the only way a dog will be calm is if it calms itself with your guidance not the force of your hand holding them still.
When they are under 8 weeks old their brains are developed differently. The mother also holds them down to gain control. Once they get older there are different ways but it is similar to a baby. You hold them and rock them and shush them. But when they are a toddler you have to reason with them.

I'd like to have one of your puppies for you do a great job with them. I did the same with all of my puppies. People think they make tons of money raising dogs, well if you put your time and money into your dogs you don't make very much money at all! It's about loving what you're doing for the breed, and because you love them not for money because you aren't going to make any money if you raise them the right way. Oh, I'm not saying you can't make some but it goes back into the dogs, because you have to take into account things could happen through any dogs pregnancy, then all check ups, through their pregnancy. It's not cheap raising them at all, people don't understand that and that's why we have so many dogs in shelters. 90% of backyard breeders, and puppy mills those dogs end up in shelters, fighting rings, running the streets, or abusive situations. We see and hear about it every day, true breeders that sell dogs don't give you the rights to register, and most must be spayed or neutered. All of my puppies were spayed and neutered before they went to their homes. I made sure of that, that's where my money went.
What possible reason would there be to cut a cattle dog’s tail off? They’re not excessively long. I’ve never ever seen that here in Aus and people would be confused as to why if they saw it. It’s a strange, cruel thing to do to any dog really and has been outlawed here.
It's crazy! We always keep the tails and few claws! I don't understand why people do it! It's getting less popular though so hopefully in a couple years everybody will stop.
In early days as working cattle dogs, their tails were cut to keep them from getting stepped on by livestock. I also think it's cruel and takes away some of their balance and maneuverability.
Yes! But that has even proven to make injuries more likely because of the balance issue. I don't know why anyone would still do it ever with the knowledge that we have.
Some are born with short tails, ( Bob tails) you can't cut a puppies tail when they are as old as hers are now it would be a surgery and not necessary most vets won't do it. The breeder will usually do it at 3- 6 days old if they want them to be bobbed
For show in foreign countries it's illegal to cut their tails, but if it's natural it's acceptable which sometimes they have natural Bob tails. That's the only way they should be I think is natural, I showed my Great Dane with natural ears and didn't have any bad comments from anyone.
If I could I would get 2 from the same litter, so they could grow up together.

I have heard it all as well. And at the end of the day it is purely about their health. Are they fit strong and healthy? I have seen people breed until 10. I recommend you checking with your vet first though. Just to make sure your girl is good to go. And of course temperament and a few health test matter as well :) courage is 4 and 1/2
BonneLife Ok great,my dog used to be slightly overweight but she is fine now, we are planing to go to the vet to check her out,but I wanted to have some insight form a person that's had a go at it!
