BRS down plays the incredibly useful and educating information they put out weekly, and even confesses that it's a sophisticated marketing/sales technique. But this info is on par with grad level chemistry and marine biology! :) They may be selling the stuff they're talking about, but they don't take any crap from the vendors and if the product doesn't live up to the hype, then they get booted. BRS holds the manufacturer's feet to the fire and that goes a long way in developing trust. Way to go guys. Keep that integrity going. Good recap of of the last few weeks.
Finally! I have been out of the hobby for about 8 years, and just now getting back in. I am currently working on a 125 custom setup, with a 60" TV over the top. I started watching video #1 of the 52 weeks of Reefing on Tuesday (03/08/16), and just finally caught up with everyone else on week #33 (It was like a weekend marathon of a favorite TV series). I must say that these video are great, and have offered tons of support and insight to my setup and design. I have about 8 pages of notes, and some great information now, that I truly believe will only help me be successful. I just wanted to say a huge thank you for taking the time to produce and share these insightful videos for all of us in the reefing community, especially me! Cant wait for the next video to some out, BRS rocks!
BRS this is insane, I am a marine Biologist and an Aquaculture scientist and some of this stuff is really well done and, most of all, spot on for the audience. I am about to start my first reef tank and a lot of your content is super useful, especially to get an insight into the technology in the hobby. I am in Scotland though so won't be able to buy from you....for now!
Your videos are amazing. I am learning so much from this series and your other videos. I just keep them playing non-stop as I am doing all kinds of stuff.
Not dosing trace yet. Have a channel on my pump for it though. Once 2-part gets automated, it'll be time to dose. For now, I'm managing dosing manually.Great video. I wait every week for your next one. Just got an order from BRS. You are not just about great videos. The products are great. You site is my #1 resource for information as well. Keep it up!
I plan to run on Triton. A simple and well balanced approach and easily adjustable when the needs of the tank change. it takes a lot less time than calculating the elements separately and the detailed test provides a nice insight in my tanks parameters.
I voted water changes, because that works for me. I like to keep things as simple as possible, and having a load of tiny bottles, along side all the test kits would take the fun out of it .. for me!
BRS 2 part kit was purchased about a year ago and I hooked it up to a dosing pump only to realize that my consumption is not great enough. Between monthly water changes and kalk in my ATO my parameters stay pretty stable with only minor adjustments needed weekly. I also dose aquavitro fuel weekly.
I've noticed no mention of Triton, is this because you feel it's not as established as zeovit, or because it's mainly sold by unique corals in the US? I've had great results with triton! my system has been insanely stable and all 3 parts are dosed at the same rate. As I said 3 part! For everything!
Great work.. Great info on C02 and trace. I'm at WAR with C02 in my set up. Glad to know I'm not alone. I think there is a complete Vertex Ca reactor set up in the BRS slightly used area maybe? How about hook me up with that? I came running to the computer to watch the newest episode as usual. Cheers guys. Again great info.
great video as always. im i the uk and run the triton method. i was wondering if you guys would ever plan on doing a video realted to the method as i know triton us is becoming more popular.
Great idea, drawing air from outside for your skimmer to help maintain ph. I bought the Tunze 9004 in-tank skimmer and it is very convenient to modify it this way because its air intake tube can be easily extended to pass through a small hole in the wall using air pump tubing. You gave me a great idea, guys, thanks. Is drawing air from outside going to help keep the ph stable during the night as well, even if the tank has no refugium?
I recently purchased the reefer 350 and was looking to start a LPS/SPS (more LPS) reef tank. I have not had much lucks with bugs tanks as this is my 3rd attempt; however, it's my first tank with an internal overflow and a sump. I've had the best luck with a 14 gallon bio cube. I will be setting up the tank this weekend. I am using the light I purchased 4 months ago (aquaticlife 6 bulb 48" T5). I've been getting the most help watching/following the BrS160. I found out that I'll need kalk wash plus good to run a small media reactor. Going to take the steps in the video and keep reading.
Ryan, I am so confused as to what you said at the intro of the video. "Throw PH buffers in the trash..." Does this mean KH buffers aswell??? As I have been accustomed to believe they are the same thing... The KH buffer dosage method is now considered "outdated" and should be superseded with "kalk" and or calcium reactors or 3 part "component additives"... ??? Please clear this up for me. Thanks in advance.
Hey guys, would it be possible to do an updated video of the staff's office tanks. They keep popping up every now and then in videos but I'd love to have a good look of an "before&now" type of thing.
Hi I recently read an article when Randy mentions Fauna Marin to not be a balanced system and for this reason does not recommend this product . Is this still the case ?
I wonder if you could find some sort of solenoid that, in conjunction with a controller, could switch the air inlet on your skimmer from normal air to a canister of CO2 scrubbing media based on pH. Seems like it would slow down consumption of the media, and also eliminate the daily pH swings more precisely than just running fuge lights at night.
You'll almost never get away with adding nothing to the tank on a long enough timeline, but soft coral tanks will require much less attention in the dosing department vs tanks with LPS or SPS.
great video. i found that one the mg level is where it needs to be the kalk and alk tend to balance out. The tank is coming along great. how much 2 part are you dosing per day?
for me its water changes, kalkwasser, and ill use seachem fuel once or twice a week for aminos and some trace replacement. other than that just good food like reef chili.
+BulkReefSupplyCom I guess I can not vote =( I'm on a 2016 Macbook Air using Safari without any adblock and I do not see an (i) icon.. ohwell. Anyone else with this issue??
Why doesn't anyone ever talk about lowering PH? I have always had an issue with high PH. about 8.45-8.5 I maintain strict levels of calcium/alkalinity and magnesium. I do, do water changes. I do not over aerate the water, just what the protein skimmer does and whatever effect the overflows have. I have a small refugium with a little bit of chaeto that i do trim as it grows. I also have a 4x8x8 bio media block. I only light the tank for 8-9 hours. I was keeping the huge light on 24/7 I will probably use my RKL to only run it a few hours. Thoughts?
Is this titled wrong? Its all about ph and not trace elements. I have seen this video before when I was researching raisng ph..I am wrong its a combined ph and trace elements and trace didint begin until 7 minutes of the other. I change water everyweek and use Fritz rpm, do I need to be dosing anything else. I jhave 6 corals frags, no new polps in 6 weeks! Blasto looks like heads are getting bigger them selves but no new ones! Is this bacause I have a new system. I feed reefroids an d mysis and weekly water changes. Is that enough? I read that dosing 2 part counts as food and raises nitrates as well, s o My nirtes have risen since I satered feeding corals. They are between 10 and 20. Ihave no skimmer so thats why I change water weekly. I read a new tank should have nitrates below 5 Ithink it
+Jake Bentley I used the red sea program but had to stop due to a nitrate spike. I'm now running bio pellets and plan to return to the Red Sea. I changed my dosing of reef energy A&B to align with the coral colors instead of daily dosage. About once a week. You must have perfect parameters to use this system.
+Jake Bentley I have a 150 Gallon mixed reef with a 40 gallon sump. 190 pounds of reef saver Rock and a 1.5 inch layer of live sand. SPS and LPS Corals. Acropora and Milapora for the SPS. Lots of different types of LPS. Large clean up crew with hermits, snails, starfish, and craps. My fish are in quarantine bc of an ICH outbreak that I think came from some inverts I didn't quarantine. Tangs, Gobi's, and Clowns are my fish. I didn't use the nopox from red sea but I did use vodka dosing until my bio pellets started working. I had no nitrate problems until I started the Red Sea Program. They offer more info than the Zio Vit but still could use some more tutorials on using the product. Their videos are kind of hard to watch in my opinion. I wish BRS would do a how to on the Red Sea Program.
+Jake Bentley "Does anyone use the Red Sea system?" I do, and have for quite a while now. The only deviation is to move from their 2 part to Kalkwasser in my ATO. I'm about 1 week into the conversion. I didn't think I'd be a fan, but I've become quite impressed with Red Sea. I like the nitrate control way more than using biopellet carbon dosing. "Reef Energy" seems to be effective, easy, and … did I mention easy? I'm not using products for color development, or their AiptaisiaX - I have no problems to address which those products could help. My tank is a 72 gal bow front stocked with SPS, and a few euphilia and a very small population of finned friends.
+Robert Nadeau I too have started using kalkwasser in my ATO for a higher PH. I use either my the red sea or my BRS two part to get back up to parameters if low.
BRS down plays the incredibly useful and educating information they put out weekly, and even confesses that it's a sophisticated marketing/sales technique. Another week of priceless information. Thanks BRS!! Go BRS you number 1!! Woot!!!
"There's no reason to pay for hardly noticeable." Ain't that the truth! Kudos to BRS for that statement.
"There is no reason to pay for hardly noticeable".
So much truth in this!

A tip : you can watch series at kaldroStream. Me and my gf have been using it for watching lots of of movies lately.
@Griffin Enoch Yea, been watching on Kaldrostream for months myself :)
@Griffin Enoch Definitely, I've been using kaldrostream for since december myself :)
@Griffin Enoch Yea, I have been watching on KaldroStream for years myself :)
@Griffin Enoch yea, I have been watching on kaldroStream for since december myself :D
I used Seachem Reef Plus for a long time. I just switched to Red Sea Colors program and so far i love it.
Half way head spinning week 33, but I have a feeling I should really pay attention to this one.
Your videos are amazing. I am learning so much from this series and your other videos. I just keep them playing non-stop as I am doing all kinds of stuff.

I'm getting ready to run the mcd-3-m. The 2-part I run is Randy's recipe #2. www.advancedaquarist.com/2004/4/chemistry
I plan to run on Triton. A simple and well balanced approach and easily adjustable when the needs of the tank change. it takes a lot less time than calculating the elements separately and the detailed test provides a nice insight in my tanks parameters.
+BulkReefSupplyCom About 170 gallons (650 liters). total system with the sump will be around 800 liters.
Thanks for all this information BRS.

Simply phenomenal! Great info and well done. I currently use BRS 2-part but may try the Red Sea coloration system with it. Love you guys!

Oh this will take some learning. I want my reef to be epic. This have me reconsidering

a punch in the face for pH buffer products

Love all the Vids! Great Job.I notice a 60 Gal cube(which I have). Could you give a breakdown on what filtration and lighting is being used?thanks !!
Could you Triton test the out put of the calcium reactor to see what the elements actually are?
Hey guys, would it be possible to do an updated video of the staff's office tanks. They keep popping up every now and then in videos but I'd love to have a good look of an "before&now" type of thing.
Hi I recently read an article when Randy mentions Fauna Marin to not be a balanced system and for this reason does not recommend this product . Is this still the case ?
2 little fishies acro power has given me amazing polyp extension and i would say improved growth and health
Does this work for sps and softies as well?
I really would love to have such a trustworthy supplier here in Europe.
I understand. And Europe is a pain with all the different regulations etc. Ah well.

Derp, I probably already saw that video when it came out and completely forgot about it. haha Here I thought I had an original idea.
Is it possible to have a soft coral reef without adding any elements?
You'll almost never get away with adding nothing to the tank on a long enough timeline, but soft coral tanks will require much less attention in the dosing department vs tanks with LPS or SPS.
great video. i found that one the mg level is where it needs to be the kalk and alk tend to balance out. The tank is coming along great. how much 2 part are you dosing per day?
+BulkReefSupplyCom i love the progression of this series.
can we see the 160 tank?
for me its water changes, kalkwasser, and ill use seachem fuel once or twice a week for aminos and some trace replacement. other than that just good food like reef chili.
Thanks
I still do not see where I can vote!!?

does water drip from a lid affect ph?

How would you handle a nano reef with a few corals and 2 fish that has a PH of 7.8, Alkalinity of 5.5, and Calcium 500+?
BulkReefSupplyCom I use a Red Sea kit for all but calcium. I had to go with API because of cost.
Russell Garcia how often are you doing water changes
Can anyone ID the starfish at 1:29? I inherited one a while ago and never found out the name.
+BulkReefSupplyCom I thought so! seems so tiny. thanks :)
What do the human body, and calcium reactors half in common? What goes in, must come out.
+BulkReefSupplyCom Can i use RO DI water for my freshwater tank
3:57 full house?
What trace element supplements will you use for the BRS160?
What fish at 00:18 ?
