You have talent. I’m surprised you’ve never done this before because a lot of your art is very good. If you stick with this you have the potential to develop superb skills.
Thank you for sharing your journey in practicing drawing and urban sketching. Your sketches are wonderful, even the ones you said you didn’t like!!! I fell in love with urban sketching about three years ago as I was teaching myself to draw. I like to look back at my initial sketches and see how much I’ve improved over the years. Consistency (drawing everyday) is most important when learning. I tried too many times before to learn how to draw, but it wasn’t until I did it consistently that I started to make progress. If I can teach myself to draw in my late 40’s, anyone can do it. To anyone thinking about learning to draw, just start. Yes your sketches will look crappy at first, but keep at it and don’t throw them away. You want to look back at your progress. It is very satisfying.
I LOVED this video. Inspiring and informative. I really loved the one with the building on its own with the sky. So cool!! Loved all the Mila sketches as well!!
I usually skip the first blah blah blah in these sketchbook tour videos, but your blah blah blah really got me because urban sketching is making me draw everyday as well, not because I feel like I need to, but because I want to. I'm just having fun and it seems like you had it too
You do great for just starting up. I have been plugging away at this for about 1 and a half years now and I still struggle. I try to follow different people and just can't paint like them. Urban sketching is my focus. I have yet to get out there and do it tho. So my favorite in your sketchbook is one of them that you don't like. The first one of you painting the buildings out of you window. I really love that one. Anyways I think your doing great. Keep it up. You have the potential to be a great urban sketcher.
wow thank you so so much. i really appreciate everything you said. it’s always difficult to paint EXACTLY like someone else - especially with something as free and loose as ink and watercolour. it’s almost impossible to replicate. so that’s good to remember :)
Well done and thanks for sharing. Have you tried black fineliners and marker pens ( instead of the watercolour) ? It also seems to a common medium for urban stretchers.
Good question!! Personally I haven’t exclusively. I was thinking of getting some more faber castell pitt artists pens (I have currently the 6 gray shades) in different colours to try that though. Currently am too in love with watercolour to have given it much thought though. Feel free to recommend some markers if that’s a medium you like :)
haha i know what you mean! somebody described my style as it looks like i make the painting and then scrunch up the paper and open it up again :) thank you for your words and encouragement 😊
