- One of my favorite things to do growing up in Hawaii was to spend time at the absolutely beautiful Kailua Beach. We searched for Japanese glass fishing floats at night. We bodysurfed all day. And we spent many hours catching, chasing, and digging for sand crabs. This is how we would dig up the bigger crabs out of their holes.

Omg brings me back so many memories. Me and my cousin’s, at night would go out and catch crabs and get coconuts 🥥 from the beach for dinner for the family. We all went camping over the weekend like every weekend so much, fun miss the old days.

nice back home in Puerto Rico we use to catch land crabs near the rivers using traps constructed of wood. brought me some good memories.

Whenever I'm walking on Waikiki beach these holes are really common. I've dug them up sometimes but never bothered after a few minutes.
go to northshore or barbers point pretty easy to catch em
going to hawaii in about 2 1/2 weeks because i have family down there. Itll be my first time and im super excited !

Me and my mom used to do this, we would get a bucket full of water and when we saw a huge crab go down a hole we would pour the water down the hole then dig till we saw it and quickly grab it. It was so much fun but I don't see me doing it again in the near future.

Used to do this a lot as a kid. When I got older I realized it's a pretty selfish thing to do unless you're gonna use them for something. Poor things have to retreat to the water, where they hopefully won't get eaten, then wait till dark to dig a new home for themselves. I hope this doesn't spawn a bunch of tourists to dig up all the crabs and mess with them for no reason other than their own curiosity and satisfaction, but it probably already has...

+Barrie Chan If the hole is there, most often there will be a crab at the bottom. If you can see fresh tracks around the opening of the hole, for sure the crab will be in the hole.
+Barrie Chan I used to dig them with the hand, but one day one crab bited me, I never did it again
best time to go is around 2200h low tide. and push your palm down on the back shell. then grip their sides with your index finger and thumb. these guys are ono with butter.
