Squash leaves, or pumpkin leaves, are a nutritional powerhouse, containing not only typical leafy green benefits like vitamins A, B, and C, but also minerals such as zinc, iron, potassium, and magnesium. Squash leaves, trimmed and cut for the cooking pot.1
Also spray diluted appel cider vinegar add a teaspoon of the vinegar in the water spray on leaves will stop bugs and white milk spots

Just a tip or something I have found to be useful. Zucchini grow big... very big.. and you can use this as a shade plant for things like off season lettuce or brussels. They grow about 3 feet tall and can virtually block out the sun and I use this to sneak in some summer lettuce, which is hard to grow alone in zone 7 this time of the year.

I love the flowers more than zucchini, I fill them with mozzarella basil, and anchovy and batter them then deep fry them. This is the way we eat in Italy.

I grow 8 zuchinni in an 8 x 4 bed every year with no problems. Air flow can be control by heavily pruning the leaves. Up to 40% can be removed and the plant just sends even more nervy to producing fruit instead of leaves.

@@maricarcepriano just cut away the leaves at the base of their stem. Look for leaves that are damaged or have powdery mildew or if the have squash bug eggs this is any easy way to remove the whole patch of eggs and destroy them. Cutting back old leaves will send energy to the plants new growth 😄

@@maricarcepriano they may not be getting pollinated well. You can always do this by hand. I have a video on my channel ua-cam.com/users/RseAbv333 about hand pollinating cucuzza squash the process is the same. If your concerned that your soil lacks nutrition try adding some well composted cow manure like Black Kow around the base of the plant. Just mix a thin layer into the top soil.
@@maricarcepriano if those tiny zucchinis don't develop that's a sign of flowers that haven't been fertilized. This video explains it. If you don't have enough pollinators, you can pollinate them yourself. Use a Q-tip or a small paintbrush to transfer pollen from the male flowers to the female flowers
My kids planted zucchini and yellow squash seeds in preschool. We watched them grow then planted them in the garden. We had tons of zucchini for months from 2 little seeds

I stake my zucchini and tie the main stem every few inches up the stake with string. They take up less than a square foot of ground space with the roots. Prune off the leaves below your lowest zucchini.

Yes, you have to stake all courgettes, if you don't stake them then you run the risk of reducing the amount of pollinators that can access the flowers, this then leads to blossom end rot. That is a fact, end rot has nothing to do with mineral deficiency.

this year for the first time i am handling my spacing by growing them vertically and removing all the leaves from the bottom part of the plant as they grow. it is a lot easier to spot any squash bugs or vine borers that way too.
The best defense I have for the Vine Borers is to cover the stem with dirt/compost as they grow. Renew the coverage after a rain. This allows 2 things-keeps the Clear Wing Moth (Vine Borer Larva) from laying her eggs & encourage the Squash to put down extra roots.
I still have no luck.
@@Servants_Heart I watched a couple videos where people make a NYLON SLEEVE.
Just before planting their new plant:
1. Cut a women's nylon "foot" off (I didn't know women still wear nylons 🤷)
2. cut in 4" lengths (measure or eye 4" up, it doesn't have to be perfect)
3. drop the dirt/root ball of plant through it to create a nylon "sleeve" for the stem.
4. Using twine, or a plant clip, gently fold nylon just tight enough where it wont slip down - just below the first set of leave. (If you use a tie, make a bow instead of a knot because you will need to loosen it as the stem increases in width)
5. Place the squash in hole and pull bottom of the nylon down, about 2 inches below dirt level, fill in dirt - voila! Squash bugs won't even try!
If a squash bug has already infiltrated and if your stem is long enough, you can bury the stem up further from the damaged part (DON'T CUT THE STEM YET!)
Keep the soil most to encourage new roots - about 2 weeks. When leaf growth starts new, double check root production by gently brushing dirt away to see if roots have grown. If so, you can now cut stem below the new rooted part and remove the old dead root ball.
I also recommend STAKING and if leaves get so thick you can't see the stalks and flowers are blocked from sun, thin them out!

Those borers? I've always had a problem with them - until last year. Last year I cut plastic bottles in half and inverted the top part over the seedlings as I planted them. This provided a funnel through which the plants were able to grow with their stems protected by the plastic. I buried the lip of the top of the bottle in the dirt and the plants grew out of them, spreading their luscious leaves. The borers were confounded. They were confused. They were frustrated. They were angered. They started to picket. They rioted. They petitioned city hall. They tried to have all plastic bottles and funnels banned. They made deals with Hollywood for a documentary detailing their plight. But they could never penetrate through the plastic funnels to get to the stems of the squash plants to lay their eggs and, for the first time in decades, I hauled a huge harvest. I do believe those borers are now in psychotherapy.

I use any bottle whose mouth is at least wide enough to accommodate a plant stem - think of the mouth of a plastic milk jug. Anything like that. Cut the bottle a third of the way down, thread the seedling through, then plant the seedling and bury the wider part of the bottom in the ground - not the lip mouth of the bottle as previously mentioned - only because having done both, it works best when the wider part is in the ground and the smaller opening through which the stem is threaded is above the soil - about half an inch - confuses the heck out of those tiny little robbers of my green, eatable paradi9se. They land, look for the root and stem base to do their destruction, and can't. They fly away dismayed and deeply depressed. Word on the street is that they have started a self-help group for borers who were depressed over being foiled. They even started up their own bars - lots of drunk little borers complaining ceaselessly to the indifferent borer bar tender. It sometimes gets very noisy out there on the peripheral sides of the garden.:::)))

I have actually used old banana peels around the base of my plants for protection against the borers or after I cut one out I wrap a banana peel around it. I have even mounded more soil over the base and prevented the plants from dying early.

I am happy to report that my zucchini is the most successful plant right now in my summer garden. It's big, it's beautiful, and itr's flowering like crazy. I hope it produces some female flowers soon.

Great Video! I grew zuchini last year vertically, it saved enormous space for me, you just need to fix one stick next to the main stem and try to wrap the future growth around that stick, making a tower. I cut all leaves under the fruit so the air circulated and in 2 days I had a massive growth on top and more fruits. I had constantly 3-4 fruits( 100- 200gr weight) from 4 plants every other day.
Some people overthink their gardening and some people just let it happen. She’s a good mixture of both.
That's the way you gotta be in order to really enjoy your garden and not get your heart broken lol. In my garden I view every plant ad an experiment and believe everything is on loan and can be taken at any time. It's a lot less stressful this way than back when I gardened in the past.
I stuff the blossoms with cream cheese, sometimes I mix cream cheese and blue crab meat in with it. Delicious! And I only pick the male flower in the early season, I pick about 50% of the males and still have tons of zucchini. After I’ve had my fill of zucchini I’ll start picking the baby zucchini with the blossoms attached and stuff the blossom attached to the mini-zucchini .. this is the best!!!

I have two zucchini plants growing over top of eachother and they’re still somehow both thriving and producing like crazy but I do agree about the spacing. it makes it hard to get to the zucchini without damaging the leaf stems
Mrs Jolley, We planted 5 zucchini plants between some other plants and we didn't baby them at all----and I want to share with you that we found that these 5 plants would feed the entire country of Ethiopia---maybe Russia too! Thanks for a nice video--:-)

Aside from the borer resistant varieties, the best way to avoid the borer is to plant widely enough apart so the vines do not come together. I have used wooden pallets propped at an angle to help keep the vines as airy as I can. The vines just automatically climb the pallet and the fruit hangs down so they are easier to see and harvest.
So refreshing to see someone so passionate about gardening tips! I adore zucchini and summer squash, especially Zephyr, which is a hybrid between the two. Highly prolific! One reason I read about initial male flowers is to start attracting the bees and other useful insects, so when female flowers appear, bees are already visiting the plant to pollinate them. Smart move by nature. I also have a zucchini plant this year and gave it ample space and sun to grow.

This year was my very first time gardening and I did so much research about what to feed my plants and how to prune them and got my zucchinis looking absolutely beautiful, unfortunately I underestimated what pests could do and my big beautiful zucchini had its main stem completely ravished by vine borers. I'm going to try again with them at some point. Your videos are super helpful! Gonna do more research this time!

@Chester Zbytek, please consider container gardening. Earthbox and Emsco City PIckers may allow you to be true to your heart. I currently have 10 on a small patio deck. They are easy on the knees, space saving, grow more in less time and move on casters. Once they are set up, keep the water reservoir full and enjoy your garden. There's nothing like fresh air and sunshine to go with home grown goodness.
You should do those high raised garden beds, high enough that you can stand and garden.I hope you are never too old to do things you love:) best wishes

I always grow 5 zuccini and 5 yeallow squash in my 8 by 4 foot raised bed. But you need to prune out leaves once they get going good to provide air circulation and I get more than enough fruits! Also my squash always produce female fruits first! Been doing this for over fourty years now!

I actually nurture my Daddy Long Legs, as they help your plant grow healthy & even eat certain fungi, molds, insects, beetles, plant eating worms & caterpillars. I love your garden, Nicole! My zucchini are slow because of our cold rain & low temps. End of June and our low temps are in the 40's at night....stunting my plants. Ugh! I love in Southeast Idaho.

I planted by seeds direct sow and then pruned the leaves and I have huge amount of production but they are prolly slightly overcrowded but I made sure to prune leaves to continue the airflow pruning is so important

Surrendered in Houston. I don't use chemical pesticides in my garden. The vine borer has killed any squash I've tried despite my best efforts to remove them. Your zucchini look beautiful and I hope they're a big success.
I solved the spacing problem by only growing climbing varieties next to eachother, so the trellis allows them plenty of airflow. I have a couple of zucchini in pots also, with some flowers and they do great!!
I use 6 foot garden steaks that I tie up my zucchini as it grows I als prune my zucchini, and I plant corn in between zucchini rows. So nothing goes to waste

Brings me back to All the Spraying of Insecticides We Used to Do and what a Negative Impact that Had On All of Us AND on Our Environment (which includes the Birds, the Bees, those beneficial Insects ....) Its just a matter (at least for Us Home Growers) of just getting down to where the Plants are Growing and Looking at the Underside and the Growing Tips and Plant Bases to see if there are any concerns. I found 4-5 tiny cabbage worms on my Broccoli the other day and snuffed them out. Birds such as Chickadees help as well. They land on the plants and take them back to their nests for the babies to eat...

Very good information. Enjoyed the video. This year has been pretty crazy weather. Was pretty cold here in Texas. It switched to normal weather really fast but it already stunted alot of my plants. But finely there getting going well.
Hey! Here too. We were hit with some cold weather that kept me from transplanting. The plants were getting so big -- and stressed -- in their 5 inch pots. My zucchini started to flower as a result, so I picked off all the buds when I finally planted them out in the garden. Luckily they bounced back. Glad to hear that yours made it through as well.
It helps that you have the bee's to pollinate the flowers. And I will be staking mine this year.

Were I live, the zucchini borer is a red flying bug, They come after the plant is full grown. one thing to watch is when you see the plat starting to grow the zucchini, keep a good eye on them because they seem to double in size very fast.

maybe they sell some sort of self pollinating varieties back in the states but in the philippines, i have ALWAYS had to manually pollinate my gourds (squash, bitter gourd, watermelon, etc.) and the way we do it here is to rip off all the petals of the male flower and stick the rest of in inside the female and just leave it there.
@@spencerphilippinedream3706 Here we have big bumblebees that do most of the squash flower pollinating. 🐝🐝🐝 If you're doing the pollinating the hand way, you could tie off the flower petals together to seal out any pollinators once the male anthers are inside, and save the seeds! Or hybridize with other squashes and see what you get.🌄. Or raise bees... honey as a side benefit!
@@chuckkottke i hand pollinate when i can because bees let me down. i have had more bees this year and i see them every morning in my squash blooms. i also have gotten squash that shrivel up and fall off due to a lack of pollination because i left it to the bees to do their thing.

Of all plants to trust, Zucchini might be my last.
Vine borers were a huge problem when I lived in Louisiana. I tried digging them out but still missed some. My best solution was to cover very loosely with a spun row cover buried at all edges until the plants outgrew the slack, then just remove it. By the time the borers' attack was too damaging I'd gotten more than enough squash off the plants to care, and cleared them out.

Oh the powdery mildew has been horrible for me. Spacing hasn't been the issue this season. It rains here late in the evening lowering the temperature then morning is sweltering until the evening 🎠. I've managed to fight back with baking soda but not before the mildew took out three squash plants 😢. Powdery mildew is the bane of a southern gardens existence. Thanks bunches for your awesome advice. Happy gardening ❤

This is my first time planting zucchini. Already there are fruits are about 5 inches long. I did cut back some of the gigantic leaves as I read somewhere the fruits need sunlight on them. Did I do the right thing cutting back leaves and when do I know the zucchinis are ready to be picked?
@jewel amo philomena My first time growing zucchini this year as well and a big YES to cutting back the leaves, especially the ones that aren't green, w/powdery mildew and/or yellowing. The rule of thumb for zucchini's is to let them grow no bigger than 6 to 8 inches long for a mild flavor and it allows you to eat the skin. I know some people let theirs grow longer, but I stick by the 6 - 8" rule. Good luck!

As a practicing Sicilian, I fry and eat the flowers
My mom breaded them with flour after spreading them out and fried them with olive oil. They are very delicate and delicious. Its the only flower i’ve eaten( not counting broccoli, cauliflower,...)
Also it didn’t stop production of her zucchini. We ate it everyday in some form- frittatas , stuffed, sliced in circles and breaded, stewed in a light tomato sauce with other fresh veggies from garden like green beans, swiss chard, peppers, onions...My mom could grow anything from seed. Im just hoping to get some zucchini to eat from my pots on a deck. Thanks for info about male flowers come out first- that would explain why we ate flowers early in season. It gives e hope. I have mostly male flowers and one 5”zucchini that hasn’t grown. Is that because i am growing them in pots?( i usually only grow flowers and berries since huge trees surround my gardens. I’m growing veggies on deck - close-to prevent all the animals from eating them) they get 6 hours of sun. Tomatoes and cucumbers are growing but not any of yellow or green squash or spaghetti squash but tons of flowers. Do you think having too many flowers keeps bees from pollinating veggies? My garden problem this year was over seeding!!! In past years I’d have maybe 80% of what I’d plant actually grow. This year, 110% of what I planted grew! I didn’t know that was possible. 😳😫

You can plant them much closer, as long as you prune them
To prevent powdery mildew: Spray plants with water and milk, any kind of milk, BEFORE the mildew starts. It works for peonies, squash, tall phlox... Use 4 parts water and one part milk. After a heavy rain, re-apply. This also repels deer! They hate the stale milk smell, so I spray my hostas and daylilies as well. At this dilution, humans can't smell it.
