I think that the mandatory use of all 3 tire compounds during the race should be adapted for every F1 race, not just Monaco! The track could also be widened or altered between the tunnel exit and Rascasse to create at least 1 good overtaking opportunity. These 2 changes could dramatically improve the excitement of this race and save the Monaco GP!
One point on the Magnussen Vs Perez incident, KMag actually bounced off the wall slightly then into Perez, before the latter moved to stay in the racing line, but as these happened in quick succession I think it's something that's been lost.
One will point out that when was the last time Red Bull lost on proper track and not a street circuit? Silverstone or Austria in 22? Monaco is a one off race that offers no passing.
It would be sadly ironic if Williams performed poorly at Monza considering they have traditionally been very strong there. Here's hoping they shed all that unwanted weight by then.
I know the cars are much wider now than the 2000's and early 2010's, but is the tunnel thinner than it used to be? Have they increased the pedestrian access on the sides or something because it looks more congested in there than I remember it being.
On the topic of the Red flag, I know that changing the rules because of a single event(race) isn't very practical, but like the race abandoned rule; where you need to have completed a certain % of the race for it to be valid/allow full points. I think the rule to allow teams to swap dry compound tyres under red flag conditions should only be allowed after a certain amount of the race has been completed, for example 10%. That way they couldn't swap until lap 7/8 and we would still have some excitement in the pitlane for the race instead of that snoozefest. And that's a snoozefest even by modern Monaco GP standards.
Perez looks at Kmag 3x in that moment. He never once looked left so if anything he had no idea Hulk was there, but he definitely knew where Kmag was and started moving towards the wall to block him out but Kmag was already in there. So yeah I can see why it was deemed a racing incident but it’s also confusing why Kmag didn’t back out. You could see the gap was waning it wasn’t worth the chance to hang in there. He can’t *expect* Perez to be accommodating or polite and move aside so they could drive side by side and be overtaken.
Make a mandatory pit stop during racing conditions with same 2 compound rule. They COULD change tires during a red flag, but they’d still need to pit since that doesn’t count towards the mandatory green flag running pit stop. Well, green and/or yellow flag running. You know what I mean. A special Monaco customization heh.
By 26 cars will be smaller and lighter. If they further reduce them then Monaco will slowly become better. But yeah, mandating using all compounds just in Monaco is a good idea
I know it's a big deal for somebody from Monaco to win their home Grand Prix, but it shouldn't surprise many people that a country the size of a small city can't possibly have enough home drivers in a grid of 20 drivers to win a home race often, despite the fact that many f1 drivers call Monaco home (their kids would probably have the resources and mentorship to become top tier drivers)
How cost effective/ efficient would a second spec car be for monaco only? Im thinking you give teams a small budget where teams have to make smaller cars, smaller wheels just for monaco.
I'm not too familiar with Monaco as far as city layout, but I refuse to believe there isnt some pavement somewhere that could be incorporated to add a more raceable bit to the circuit. Something has needed to be done about it for a while
I don’t understand this quickest over one lap comment. If he’s the quickest over one lap then surely in the right car he should be the quickest over an entire race
"Struggle" is probably a bit of a stretch. They won't be as dominant as they were in 23 neither will they be clearly the fastest with some exceptions as they are now, I think they will still be at the top, together with Ferrari and McLaren. But 2026 is the year I look forward to, because there we'll see how they can cope with it.
I think the "second formation lap" counted as race lap because of the technicalities of the timekeeping system. At least that is what F1 always claims as the reason why backmarkers have to physically unlap themselves before a restart with the safety car ending instead of race control simpy letting them line up behind the SC and adding a lap to their count.
With the red flag, you should be able to change tyres but only if you then go to the back of the grid on restart. It creates jeopardy but if everyone changes there tyres then the grid stays the same
No disrespect to Yuki, glad he’s got some good points, but why does everyone say he had good race? On the better tire strategy he fell to over a minute behind Hamilton on track. How?
25:20 It's one thing for the FIA to treat the situation differently. They are allowed to change their minds and they have stated they will be less lenient this year....lol. It's another thing for the team to treat the drivers so differently. Gasly destroyed both cars at Australia last year. Unlike Sunday, they were both on for solid points, too. Then the team argues with the FIA, so Gasly can avoid a race ban. Ocon made a mistake. It was foolish. At the same time, I don't understand why everyone is coming down on him so harshly. Sidenote, I'm not a fan of either driver.
Only in F1 are teams allowed to freely change tires and fix damage with no penalty. A red flag is suppose to be a stoppage. If you want to change tires, they should have to pit after the red flag is lifted.
I may be wrong but I think the idea behind changing tyres after a red flag is due to the possibility of damage to tyres by debris picked up off the track before the red flag was shown. The FIA could make a rule change and require teams to fit the same compound at a red flag, that would maintain the requirement to make a later pit stop to change compounds.
inb4 someone falsely quotes Senna (as always) - because Ayrton said this to justify torpedoing Prost out of the race in Suzuka. i liked the move, but he didn't even try to brake haha
@@aaaargl Absolutely, people who use that quote are not aware it was because of a move that would likely result in Senna losing his 1990 title with the current rules.
@@aaaargl Senna said that quote to save his ass from a disqualification. Senna had zero intention to race that day and simply take Prost out to become world champion. I still don't get how the FIA allowed him to be world champion when they have DQ'd Schumacher later for the same antics.
Verstappen has not the best car anymore, now Ferrari and McLaren are in the same level. And Newey is leaving Red Bull, wich means Verstappen will not enjoys a great improvements.
He broke the curse by getting pole.... Thats enough in Monaco nothing else is needed. Just go round round slower than possible and reach the chequered flag.
You poo poo the idea of removing Nouvelle Chicane and having a long 8tth gear run down to Tabac, but I think it bears proper consideration. DRS could come in, say, 30-50 meters before the end of the tunnel. That allows enough space for a large, straight, high speed run, requiring a significant braking zone before Tabac. I think its clear this would allow a following car time to get alongside a leader before the corner. Tabac is medium speed, which reduces braking length. And there would be safety concerns. I think both could be addressed by tightening Tabac a little, reducing its speed and lengthening the braking zone. The result would, IMO, be an overtaking spot with legitimate feasibility. It wouldnt be the best, but it would be better than anything around Monaco now. I've no doubt the number of overtakes would increase massively. (That said, personally, I'd prefer to keep the historical track as much as possible...but I think there is a clear and feasible solution if youre looking to increase overtakes at Monaco.)
@soundscape26 I think apart from Canada, the races after that will be redbull tracks and while Max won't have the title wrapped up, he will have a very comfortable lead by the end of monza
It's not that simple. Max will be fighting 4 cars. The WDC will go down to the last two races. Unlike last year, RB have to use the engine at full capacity like everywhere else. So, we should expect a grid penalty and a DNF from Max... The question is how close are the others in RB tracks..

Here's my silly solution to artificially make the race better: ban slick tires. Nothing like a chewing up a set of inters in 3 laps on a dry track.

Test running here for race pace kinda seems silly. I'd focus entirely on single lap pace and then just manage the race accordingly
Great podcast guys, and for the future Monaco races, F1 drivers should race this race in F2 car, all the same spec, 😊❤❤
