I personally appreciate how he chose such an intimate and sensitive song for such a significant performance in his life. For this stage in the competition, a simple decision on song choice could make all the more difference in succeeding to the next part, or getting booted off the show. I feel like he appreciated Elliott’s music on a deep level, enough so to risk getting booted for not making a safer decision, like a pop song that’s more widely recognizable and favorable to the audience/judges.

I think Smith would have been happy that a global audience came to know his music. That being said covers lose a dimension from the original. It is a song about alcoholism and many covers change it to a song about romance. If it is about love, it is a dark and destructive affair. Elliot's nuance is able to bring it out, many covers simply don't. It might be his most intimate piece, like Lennon's Imagine.
Just let people enjoy Elliotts music why do people try to gatekeep
Honestly this rendition felt very much like a love song from one addict to another. The innocence of his vocals adds a different dimension than Smith's, but not in a bad way.
His voice fits very well with this mellow and sad Elliott song.
Non mais il faut arrêter cette prestation est réellement géniale : personnelle, juste, remplie d'émotion. Les deux candidats méritaient autant l'un que l'autre de gagner. Le reste, celui que tu préfère, ca n'appartiens qu'a toi ! Maintenant je pense qu'il est extrêmement réducteur de dire qu'Yseult a perdu simplement pour la couleur de son enveloppe corporelle, ou de dire qu'il aurait fallu qu'elle gagne juste parce qu'elle est black. Cette émission récompense le talent et la voix. On va pas commencer à élire les gens parce qu'ils ont telle ou telle origine !

Je ne connaissais pas Elliot Smith, et je remercie Mathieu pour m'avoir fait découvrir ce grand artiste.
En tous cas la victoire de Mathieu est amplement méritée, il a su se renouveler sans cesse au fil des primes, tout en gardant son univers si particulier. Bien évidemment, Yseult a également un talent fou, et je pense qu'ils peuvent tous les deux avoir un très bel avenir musical, et c'est tout ce que je leur souhaite!
En tous cas je continuerai de suivre ce farfadet qui est mon chouchou depuis le début de l'aventure!
A tous les rageux qui crient à l'injustice devant la victoire de Mathieu, criant au racisme puis prédisant avec leur boule de cristal qu'il n'aura aucune carrière : cette interprétation est juste l'ultime preuve de la sensibilité, du gout, et de la qualité d'interprète de Mathieu. Peut être ne sera t-il pas un chanteur d'une renommée extraordinaire, mais tout comme Elliott Smith il ne pourra que faire de la musique de qualité, faisant le bonheur des connaisseurs et c'est tout ce qu'on lui demande.

Si je m'attendais à entendre du Elliott Smith dans une émission grand public comme la Nouvelle Star... Je ne le dirais qu'une seule fois, mais bravo.
J'adore cette chanson, et je dois avouer que Mathieu l'a super bien interprétée ! Tout le monde s'en fout mais j'aurais mis un NS Bleu ^^
J'ai découvert Elliot smith et cette chanson dans ce style d'emission c'est juste énorme ; j'ai été subjugué , elle est maguifique .Encore bravo .

Je réécoute en 2020 cette interprétation qui m'avait touchée à l'époque avec tout autant de plaisir...je me demande s'il fait toujours de la musique, en tout cas je l'espère.

Le talent c'est de créer, de composer, d'écrire... et non de reprendre ce que font les autres.
Sauf qu'un télé-crochet ne marcherait pas avec des compos...

I don't agree. Mathieu did something else with this beautiful song. I can understand that his proposition doesn't touch you but I believe he did something very sweet and enjoyable. ;)

j'regarde pas du tout nouvelle star mais j'adore l'original et il l'interprète super bien pour un frenchy :D en tout cas bonne découverte ! il aurait du enchainer sur "Angeles"

C'est là où il est très bon, même si sur cette finale c'est plus un plaisir artistique qu'une réelle prise de risque. Mais on ne l'entend plus aujourd'hui, j'ai peur pour Emji du coup.
C'est triste mais aujourd'hui on résume la réussite d'un artiste à la quantité d'apparitions télévisées ou radiophoniques qu'il fait. Du coup on en vient à penser qu'un type comme Mathieu a disparu de la circulation alors qu'en réalité il sort de la musique, il fait des concerts, il a un public...L'échec c'est une notion relative au final. Certains candidats tombent dans l'oubli total oui, mais certains comme Mathieu continuent leur petit bonhomme de chemin sans forcément briller en mode strass et paillettes sur TF1 et NRJ :)
S² oui c'est vrai, et puis l'important c'est qu'ils aient toujours leur public et puissent faire ce qu'ils aiment. Perso je m'en moque aussi des chiffres et des apparitions tv. Comme tu dis, beaucoup d'artistes avancent dans l'ombre mais ils avancent. La musique s'écoute et perdure quoiqu'il arrive, en tout cas même si Nouvelle Star ne reviendra plus c'était pour moi le télé-crochet qui mettait le plus en avant la construction artistique d'un chanteur.
J'aime pas beaucoup la deuxieme guitare, je pense que c'est une meilleure chanson quand c'est plus simple

Truth is, before Mathieu came in the show, candidates did not even have the right to play on stage. They just sang. The show remains the master of the arrangement and stuff... but I think it was already a great victory to have them letting him play. But you're right, Elliott was into authenticity and simplicity above everything else. Yet, it was a good interpretation.
No one can do and sound like Elliot so yes he would and so do i
he would not of hated it, this is more like his version from "Good Will Hunting" that had the orchestra performing with it. Elliott was always rearranging his songs to keep them from becoming boring and old to play.

People who sing do all kind of faces to make resonate the notes they sing so it sounds loud and full, is just technique.

The guitar parts you hear are not what he's playing. Great voice but his guitar is probably not even on.

Per haps you're getting confused with the second guitar. But when he plays on his own it's easy to tell that he's playing. Of course he is, it's not a tough song to play, and he is a pretty good guitarist. Go check his other videos. Your doubts are unfounded.
