    The Mauritius community has a deep connection with its lagoons, which are in a fragile state. What are your thoughts on the efforts being made to protect the lagoons?

    The fisherman themselves are the culprits here.. Mostbof them don't respect the rules and regulations.. most of the NEVER releases undersized fish..
    Authorities are so corrupt that they close their eyes over this matter.. Also most of them never repect opening and closing seasons.

      Industrial fishing is the problem, not artisanal fisherman, they are poor people trying to get by

      I visited Mauritius like 4 years ago. Its an beatiful island but I was shocked, that there was soo much rubbish on the beach, ocean, streets and even in nationalparks...
      It was just sad to see, that some people just didn't care for the environment.
      Besides that I was amazed by the unaffected landscapes with flying megabats at sunset for example and some endemic species.

    This is not a new story to hear. over fished waters, lack of environmental protection and enforcement of laws. Glad to see some fishermen taking responsibility for their waters, shame to hear the same poachers and entitled thinking persist.

    Nice video, nice music. But there's not much about what fishermen are doing here. Basically, on one island they introduced 2 month ban on catching octopus. The rest of the video is - everyone complaining there's no fish, law is not followed and there is a corruption. You need more on that Rodrigues island success ... if it is not only octopuses.

    • @guynadacius5636

      ChrisGHD Same... I'm like why do I understand some of these people. It's like an African Haiti. But I guess we hear the familiarity because Mauritian Creole and Haitian Creole are characterized as French Creole.

    • @Crichi404
      @Crichi404 6 років тому

      Indies Beauty yeah, but there's is a lot more closer phonetic relationship to French in Mauritian Creole then in Haitian Creole. Haitian Creole, to be honest, sounds like we shorten the word from french and change the letters but keep the same sound 😅 what a small world

    Too good of a climate and too easy access to food = adolescent societies that dont innovate or progress much. It suffice that the local oceanic current gets out of order or a tsunami event to wipe them all out. Not an ideal by any means.

    Too much space (no words), and music in the movie highlight. Boring enough to fast forward right through the point of it. Re-edit! Cut to the chase more.

    The doc does not show the whole truth. Octopus fishing on foot in Rodrigues killed the whole lagoon, not being able to swim most octopus fishermen/women walk on the corals during low tide killing all of the. Nowadays Rodrigues lagoon are deserts. In Mauritius they use nets and do training with nets destroying all the corals on their path. Boats and catamarans navigate over corals with higher speeds disturbing the corals. Boats from hotels to satisfy tourists also destroy the corals. Why not legalize spearfishing, it is one of the only methods where you can visually choose and kill an adequate prey and also not damage the corals if trained. Tourists walk during low tides also killing the corals. Mauritian opens channels in the lagoon changing the ecosystem, change of currents within the lagoons, change of temperature and incoming of invasive specimens. No, I am not an expert, but nobody cares about it unless they get big $$.

    Its not said enough, fishermen.women and hunters probably do more for conservation efforts then most people. But they will never get the credit. Some loud entitled college kid from the suburbs will get more credit for doing nothing more then holding a $2 sign in front of politicians that don't really care.
