She isn't serving as a judge on the show because it's not a court of law. But she actually is a judge in terms of her qualifications and the fact that she was actually appointed. If she were to stop the show and go back to being a judge, she has the qualifications. Furthermore, she chooses to behave largely as she would in an actual court-room, for which she has significant experience.
So it's not misleading to call her Judge Judy at all. It is somewhat misleading to say that "she's not a judge".

    • @struedel25
      @struedel25 8 років тому +32

Absolutely! It would be more correct to say "in her role as Judge Judy, she does not serve in the capacity of judge."

+eschelar Trillriff-axegrinder. I don't see your comment here for some reason. I was notified though.
Your claim is that she was an honorary judge, as if that puts her on the same level as an actor who receives an honorary doctorate which is otherwise utterly meaningless.
Apparently you failed to read what I wrote - she graduated with a degree in law - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judith_Sheindlin
Studied at American University in Washington DC, majoring in government. Achieved Bachelor - not honorary.
Studied Law at New York Law School, earning Juris Doctor in 1965 - not honorary.
She passed the bar in 1965 in NY - not honorary.
Worked for 2 years in corporate law.
Worked for (?) years in family courts.
In 1982 - appointed as a criminal court judge, where she served *as an actual judge in actual court* for 4 years.
Then moved over to family court as a supervising judge, where she served *as an actual judge in actual court*
Retired from her work as an actual judge in 1993, having heard more than 20,000 cases... *as a n actual judge in actual court*
The procedure for becoming a judge can be found here:
      www.wikihow.com/Become-a-Judge
It details things like getting a Bachelor of Arts, then going to law school, then passing the bar exam, serving as a lawyer for a time, then making an application - either to be elected or to be appointed, depending on the rules for the location and the position.
Seems like she has checked all the boxes there.
Now, as to the rocks in my head... well I'll leave that up to you to figure out how concerned I am about that. I'll take the fact that you probably erased your answer as concession.
It's always fun when someone tells you how stupid you are and that you're not using your brain, then they go and check your facts and realize that they're the one who executed the fail. Bye bye now. Thanks for playing.

Her job description now is _entertainer_ . She is not paid the reported 45 million+ a year to mete out justice that would stand up to review, but keeping an agreed upon number of television viewers from picking up the remote to see what _else_ is on. That's all.

    • @ddegn

+eschelar I also thought the comment "she's not a judge" misleading. Sure she's a judge. The TV show isn't a court of law but I don't think there's anything wrong with referring to her as a judge.
I personally dislike these sorts of shows but at least Judge Judy knows the law and is (for the most part) acting in a way one would expect a judge to act. I doubt she would say the things she says on the show in a real court. I think she has to be careful about what she says about the people she thinks are at fault so she doesn't get sued with slander (or it might be "libel" I'm thinking of). In the few cases I've watched, she has called people "outrageous." She uses the word with a negative connotation but it could be argued "outrageous" isn't necessarily an insult.

    • @eschelar
      @eschelar 8 років тому +5

+Duane Degn insults aren't slander. She knows the law man. Libel is slander in written form. You can't sue someone for insulting you. You can sue someone for saying that you have done something that you didn't do.
Some corporations sue for slander for things that they actually did that are evil when people call them out for it. Kinda twisted and they sometimes win.
But not because of calling someone outrageous - or even stupid.

Judy Sheindlin has spoken openly in many interviews about people on the show being paid and that the show puts them up and pays the fees. She has been honest about all of these things and has stated that the main reason she thinks there is still a winner and a loser at the end of a case is because she shows them up for being stupid dishonest or reckless in front of her ten million plus viewers. As for calling her a glorified middle school principal, this statement is rather rude considering she is a college graduate as well as a law school graduate, not to mention she has decades of legal experience as a prosecutor and a judge. Also it is known she is no longer an officially elected Judge, she plays the role of a judge on television as she has already sat as a judge- doesn't this qualify her?? - It's a TV show... Calm down gurl.

My favorite part about Judge Judy is when she has scammers up there that are collecting unemployment and working for cash and/or under the table. Or, just working for cash and not reporting any income. Or the people on SSI for disability that are obviously not disabled and are just bilking the system. She leads them into admitting it, then calls them out. She claims that the IRS has someone assigned to watch her shows so they can catch these idiots. That's really the only redeeming thing about the show. The fact that she exposes these dopes. She gets it wrong way too often. I will admit she has more info in her hands than they explain on the show. But, it is obvious that sometimes she just won't let someone present their case 'cause they ticked her off. It's a reality show! Wapner went on record of saying she was very unprofessional. But that's what makes the show. She's the Boss!

More untold truths . . . Judge Judy usually treats one or both of the litigants on her show with utter contempt, often resorting to insulting or abusive language such as name calling, and yet, she wouldn’t have a show without them! People can easily stop her cold by refusing to appear on her show and subject themselves to her abrasive personality and bogus sense of justice. Take your case to a legitimate court. The $100 appearance fee is not worth the public humiliation or vilification you will likely suffer regardless of the strength of your case. Don’t assume that because you have the necessary documentation to prove your case, you will win on Judge Judy. She may refuse to even look at it.

None of it surprises me. I've known how it works for years. I've explained it before to people. Yes she is a judge as far as the fact she was employed as a judge for several years before she ever even thought of starting the show. I've got tapes from 60 Minutes showing her when she was a tough family courts judge. I'm not sure if she's still licensed as a judge or not but it doesn't really matter anyway. On the show she acts as a mediator. Both parties sign an agreement not to further pursue the case. That agreement IS legally binding. If either party tries to bring the case to a real court later the other party can show that judge the document signed by the complaining party agreeing not to take further action and the judge will dismiss the case. I’ve also known for years that nobody goes on TV without some sort of compensation. I never thought for a second the people who lose the case actually had to pay out of their pockets. Judy doesn’t have the power to order legal action against either party any more than you or I would - by calling the police. It’s true, she’s not an acting judge on the show. She makes reference to that fact sometimes when she talks about cases she would refuse to take in a real court but does on the show for entertainment purposes. Her decisions though are the real decisions a judge would make in a real court of law and that’s what really matters anyway. Just enjoy the show and hopefully you’ll learn a little about the law in the process!!

So what's the point of a defendant getting upset if the plaintiff wins there case, if they don't have to pay any money. I mean I could understand if the show paid the plaintiff there money, then went after the defendant later on to pay back the show it's money, which would make more since. One thing I can say that is true about these TV Court shows is that they don't play by the same rules as a real court does in a REAL COURT HOUSE. In a real court house if you step out of line the Judge has the option of threating you with putting you in jail, even for small claims court. On this TV shows all they can do is ask you to leave the court room.

Judge Judy is one of the biggest legends in today's society. She is such an inspiration and she is an absolute lady behind the scenes and in her every day real life. She's also a total anti-feminist like myself and that gives me some reason to believe there is some hope left for us women yet. I wish more youths were given women like these to worship and idolize rather than the likes of the Kardashians and the Lena Dumb-Dumbs of society. Judy Schiendlen, Elizabeth Smart, Michelle Knight, Holly Willoughby; these are the real women of the world who we should be plastering over our magazines (I know Holly has a bit of media attention but not near enough for what she deserves) and enticing young women to research and follow instead of allowing our TV's and social media to raise our children and instill immoral values in them because we are too arrogant and ignorant to admit that we need to have one of either parent at home to properly raise your children and bring them up to be stable, happy, truly confident and unconditionally loved. Stop thinking it's ok for someone else to influence your child when you don't even know what the influencer's ethics and opinions are. It's not fair to your child and it's not fair for you to think you can do it all when it's clear we can't do it all. It's funny how much our younger generations have changed since women were allowed to work. I'm not saying women shouldn't work and if you think that you obviously didn't even bother reading my comment properly as I've already stated that one of EITHER parent needs to stay at home to bring the kids up, NOT the woman. The sooner we get that into our thick skulls, along with proper parenting skills and techniques that don't involve negative reinforcement, violence, fear-inducing comments and unnecessary aggression, the quicker our children will grow up to be all-rounded, stable, self-assured and self-motivated, responsible and sensible individuals instead of the rude, vile, thoughtless, highly-confused, aggressive, violent, irresponsible, ignorant and arrogant feckers we have in today's first-world societies. I don't know why we can't admit we went wrong as a nation and as individuals and aim to fix it instead of sticking our thick heads up our own arses to get away from the harsh reality of what we have allowed to happen. There's nothing wrong with admitting failure, sincerely apologising and working extra hard to make up for all the short-comings we've caused with our self-entitled and lazy behaviour and attitude. It's easier than allowing this bollocks to continue.

I had a friend who was on Judge Judy way back in the first or second season. Judge Judy didn't award any money to either side so they didn't receive a dime for their troubles. She ignored the actual law and photographic evidence. The show flew everyone into LA in the morning gave them a crappy cheap lunch and then put them all back on planes by the end of the afternoon so they didn't even get to enjoy LA for the day. So in the end no money, fun and just made the show and Judge Judy richer. Great deal!

Actually, the decisions she makes are legally binding, as are any contracted arbitration decisions. Meaning that once the ruling is made and the monies accepted, it is illegal for the plaintiff (if he or she loses the case) to again go to small claims court and sue again. The decisions are legally binding, period. And you're right, it is a win/win for both parties. Plaintiffs who are suing poor folks have little to no chance of receiving the money even if they win the case, so going to JJ is a good way to be guaranteed the money they're owed. And for the defendants, if they lose, it doesn't matter because none of the money is going to come out of their pockets, plus they get paid to be there, so what's not to like? A free vacation, paid attendance, and no money coming out of their pockets if they lose. You'd be dumb not to take it if the opportunity comes up. Unless of course what you're being sued for is so embarrassing that you don't want a nationwide audience to see it.

Exactly. You can tell some of them don't care. But then some of them really do- especially if they're suing for a lot of money or of they just don't want the other to win on principal.

the show does reward criminals... and the mastermind of columbine did openly mock people like her in his diary.. he got caught breaking into a car and did the whole i'm sorry dance publicly... but in his dairy.. his real thoughts... he mocked the court, he mocked the victim, he mocked the system...
think about it... sometimes being ''understanding'' is NOT the way to handle things... some people see it as weakness...and take advantage.... maybe if they locked him up sooner... he wouldn't of went on a shooting rampage..

Yeah I guess people will believe anything on tv. Duh, different laws for different states. People clearly come from all over to sue, she don't know all the laws in all the states.

    • @brandonwithnell612

+Henny Lopez some of the cases are actual real events, but the people involved would rather not go to a real court where they would have to pay if they lose, in tv court there is no losers unless the judge decides the case is simply ridculous and throws you out

Most of this isn't "untold" but readily available information about the show. And, paying litigant costs (including judgements & travel costs) is standard practice for courtroom reality TV shows.

Lansana Camara I was just surprised but it really isn't that deep, I haven't watched the show in years. Over here in the uk they only show the old ones from 2005 to 2008
