These two tunes are more like "Satriani" inspired. Good basic rock songs with nice melodies. Perfect for a car cruise. If you want the "prog" and the Dream Theater-esque tracks, check out oddfather, gemini and temple of circadia
The ultimate absolute best piece on the album is The Oddfather. One of the most fabulous guitar solos, and a showcase of pretty much everything that can be accomplished on an electric guitar. You should definitely review that too someday!
It sounds so much different because it's all John's music. Sure there's input being provided by Dave and Mike during recording, but they are there as friends and session musicians in the studio for the solo work since the melodies are all written. Since it's lacks the writing inputs of the other DT musicians, it'll never sound like DT. This album made a lot of us older, long-time, Dream Theater fans really happy, knowing that John and Mike were having so much fun recording this... it's actually palpable.
Fantastic album. Hell, both his albums are fantastic. I still listen to them constantly, I was actually listening to TV when this video went up. I'm glad you're reacting to Happy Song, one of my favorites.
I remember listening to this album the day it was released while on my drive home from work and i had a good laugh when hearing "Happy Song" for the first time. I hadn't noticed the title and remember thinking what a really fun and happy sounding song it was, then laughing when i saw the title on my phone. Have been lucky enough to see John with DT, G3 and other live events, just a brilliant performer and musician. Enjoy the show and thank you for the reaction!
Thanks for the reaction, Doug. Going to see them at the Keswick in PA on 10/14. Some may say there is no feeling in their degree of technical expertise, but Petrucci’s guitar work combined with the compositional genius of DT often brings tears to my eyes! They are among the best.
Seen DT many times over the last 30 years. With all respect to Mr. Mangini ( I’m not a hater), Portnoy and Petrucci bring out the absolute best in each other. I will also see this tour, but not until November. Big fan of your channel.
This is my 5th time through this video. Thank you for sharing it with us all. It's so good to see you rocking out to it. I'm off to see the Petruchmaster tomorrow evening in Toronto. First time as solo and 4th time in total. Never gets old
I'm a reasonable guitarist, but I can't even imagine some of the pieces he creates. Incredible. Sure there are other styles, but musically there's just no one as perfect. Timing is unbelievably perfect.
Insightful as usual. I really enjoy watching you go down these guitar rabbit holes. It's nice to hear your dissections and the respect you have for so many fine instrumentalists ranging from John Petrucci to Yamandu Costa. Thanks for the great work Doug. It's always a delight to listen to at least one of your reviews whilst having a break from guitar practice. Cheers.
Met John at a meet and great in Olando. He signed my copy of Images and Words and them signed an official poster. So cool of him to do that and what a gentleman
No one can play the guitar like John Petrucci. Back then you have Blackmore, then Yngwie, and then John Petrucci came! That was it for me. Portnoy is great too!
Please react to Acid Rain by Liquid Tension Experiment live in LA. John Petrucci, Mike Portnoy, Tony Levin and Jordan Ruddess. I can listen to it infinitely
You should check out Bombay Vindaloo from the Dram Theater: Live in Tokyo concert. That was when I knew Petrucci was cut from a different cloth than any guitarist I had ever heard.
There is no one that's sounds like John he is a guitar god! Definitely enjoyed your piano addition, would be really cool to hear you do the whole song!
Dave LaRue is a legend. If you haven't already, it would be great to add some Dregs videos to your channel or perhaps something from Steve Morse (one of Petrucci's idols) who LaRue also plays with.
Alamar, what a great suggestion! The Dixie Dregs album Bring Em Back Alive is in my all time top 10 albums. I absolutely love Rod Morgenstein on drums!
Have a great time Doug! The first time I saw Mr. Petrucci was on the 2018 G3 tour as well and the song that really struck me live and made me look it up later was Glassgow Kiss. That song is such a beautiful arrangement. Also Dave LaRue is a killer player and fun to watch.
Thanks Doug, that is an album I meant to check out, so checking it out via your reaction was a bonus. PS I saw today that another (slightly lower profile) guitar hero of a similar generation - Vinnie Moore - has a new album coming out in November. It would be nice to have a reaction for some of his earlier partly neo-classical work, like The Maze.
Thank you as always for the DT-related content! I really hope he plays Damage Control for you off of his first album Suspended Animation. Amazing piece
I think you finally understand. And with my utmost respect, you heave heard many songs before but have never really known the interior binary srar power of Mike & John. Welcome to the family
Following this instrumental route, it would be interesting to see a reaction on a Tony MacAlpine piece. He is both a talented guitarist and pianist and I guess he deserves some attention from your channel.
I saw a show on the same G3 tour you spoke of, Doug. At the concert I attended, John played my favorite song that was eventually added to Terminal Velocity called "Glassy-eyed Zombies". Should check it out. Although, I do prefer the live version of the song he played on that G3 tour compared to what made it to the album.
I'm taking my son to see them in Nashville soon, he likes the Happy Song also! I'm sure it's going to be a masterclass and a wonderful evening of music. My son has played around with my guitars, and taken an interest in drums, so hopefully this will spark him to pursue music in some fashion. I also showed him the Psycho Exercises videos of Petrucci, so I think he expects him to do the funny voice. haha
I saw here on Monterrey, México, 2002 to John Petrucci on a G4!! Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Tony McCalpine...! and Petrucci with Portnoy on drums....! (they play songs for Liquid Tension)
You did end up picking the two most "classic" Petrucci compositions. There is actually quite a bit of variety on the album. I actually really enjoy "Out of the Blue" which as its name implies it's John playing the Blues, but in his own way.
I too saw the G3 gig, but here in the UK we had Uli Jon Roth instead of Phil Collen, unbelievable musicianship and guitar playing of the highest order.
If John Petrucci was paid by the note I would happily hand over my hard earned cash. Enjoy the concert Doug. I wish he would visit Australia so I could go too.
Try to react sons of apollo sir, please. Band member are Mike Portnoy on drum, Billy Sheehan on Bass, Derek Sherenian on Keyboard, Bumblefoot on Guitar and Jeff Scott Soto on Vocal. Their music is Progressive Metal like Dream Theater.
The overall tone of the album reminds me of Dream Theater’s 2nd album ‘Images and Words’. I guess it’s more melody based and more open chords then the newer stuff by DT. I recommend you listen to ‘Take the Time’ (actually every song is great).
Amazing reaction, and I love the insights that you have while listening to these songs! I know that you're more into progressive music, but there is one song that I would love to see you react to: Elysium, by Stratovarius. It's an 18 minute Power Metal epic, and it's one of their greatest tunes (which I bet was influenced by Octavarium in some degree)
Doug should get an interview with Mike Portnoy on the channel. I have a strong feeling that Mike would be happy to do so.
Great suggestion.
Yeeaa... agree. And Petrucci himself
100%. Mike has done interviews with far smaller channels than Doug. He is very supportive in that nature. And he is such a fun person to listen to
Yes please
Yeah.
The chemistry between Petrucci and Portnoy is second to none. The groove in these songs. Stunning.
These two tunes are more like "Satriani" inspired. Good basic rock songs with nice melodies. Perfect for a car cruise. If you want the "prog" and the Dream Theater-esque tracks, check out oddfather, gemini and temple of circadia

Please!!! The Oddfather is godlike
The Oddfather + Gemini!
Hell yeah baby! Petrucci!

Happy Song is the most Satriani song of Petrucci, and i love that!
PHENOMENAL musicians! Petrucci, Portnoy & LaRue~~WOW!!! Awesome tour and cd.
Fantastic album. Hell, both his albums are fantastic. I still listen to them constantly, I was actually listening to TV when this video went up. I'm glad you're reacting to Happy Song, one of my favorites.

Love your reactions. Love Petrucci and DT. I have seen them twice in the last 3 years. Phenomenal!
I hope you had a terminal uplifting musical evening Doug! DT and Petrucci solo are..... amazing!
Portnoy’s drumming in this album is so amazing. Was so happy they played together again on this. And of course the nee LTE album as well.
anyone else hear Scotty Doesn't Know in Happy Song's verse sections? nice little punk homage :D
Lol yup
Seen DT many times over the last 30 years. With all respect to Mr. Mangini ( I’m not a hater), Portnoy and Petrucci bring out the absolute best in each other. I will also see this tour, but not until November.

Greeting from Taiwan. Love John Petrucci and those songs. E major always gives a cheerful feeling. Love seeing Dough play air drums like that.
Temple of Circadia and The Way Things Fall are absolutely amazing from this album.
@@brazwen Yes
I was in the second row of the tour opener in Providence. Absolutely epic! JP's picking is second to none - he's so clean and always in perfect time.
I'm a reasonable guitarist, but I can't even imagine some of the pieces he creates. Incredible. Sure there are other styles, but musically there's just no one as perfect. Timing is unbelievably perfect.
He still practices his ass off.....
Have a great night!! I'm going to see them Nov 13th, i cannot wait! Havent seen Portnoy since 2008 so I'm stoked.
Insightful as usual. I really enjoy watching you go down these guitar rabbit holes. It's nice to hear your dissections and the respect you have for so many fine instrumentalists ranging from John Petrucci to Yamandu Costa. Thanks for the great work Doug.

Met John at a meet and great in Olando. He signed my copy of Images and Words and them signed an official poster. So cool of him to do that and what a gentleman
Hope you enjoyed the concert! I watched it too and was completely blown away.
Check out his older stuff! Jaws of life or Damage control. Jaws of life i love Dave Absolutely kills that song on the Bass
I saw them on Friday in Boston at the Berklee Performance Center. You’re gonna have a blast
Enjoy your John Petrucci show this evening Doug!!!! You have to tell us how it was 😊😊😊. I absolutely love Dream Theater 😁😁😁.
Love the open string stuff - hope you had a great time. Get your lugs onto Glasgow Kiss
No one can play the guitar like John Petrucci. Back then you have Blackmore, then Yngwie, and then John Petrucci came! That was it for me. Portnoy is great too!
Jeff Beck has more soul in his playing , more emotionally powerful.
@@firewizzard86 Definitely. Speaking of soul I should also mention Gary Moore.
Please react to Acid Rain by Liquid Tension Experiment live in LA. John Petrucci, Mike Portnoy, Tony Levin and Jordan Ruddess. I can listen to it infinitely
Thank you, for the great review I hope you had fun at the gig!
Watched him, Mike and Dave the other day in Orlando. Simply amazing
Ok , not only technical but melody living together in harmony.
I have my tickets front row! Can't wait!
Enjoy the show Doug! I'll be seeing them next week in Nashville- can't wait!!
The GOAT
Love the dual camera setup with the piano! JP is in my city of Richmond, VA tonight!
Hey great video Doug. I'm super jealous. I would love to go see these legends live man
I really enjoy to see " the whirlwind" transatlantic in the background
You should check out Bombay Vindaloo from the Dram Theater: Live in Tokyo concert. That was when I knew Petrucci was cut from a different cloth than any guitarist I had ever heard.
There is no one that's sounds like John he is a guitar god! Definitely enjoyed your piano addition, would be really cool to hear you do the whole song!
JP’s show in Red Bank was awesome! I spotted you wandering around. 😉 Glad you went and enjoyed the show!
If this is your JP future album keyboard audition, I think you’re killing it
I have tickets to see John and Mike on October 17th. Super excited to see them together again live.
I went to his concert in Boston, it was amazing to watch and hear!
I was in their Albany show last Sat and that was amazing and extremely impressive.
Flying Colors with Steve Morse, Dave LaRue, Mike Portnoy and Neal Morse are already on his list! 🎸🎹🤘🏻
Hell yes! I'm going to the Orlando show. Saw DT there for Distance Over Time. Can't wait for this one.
Saw JP with G3 in 2001
Can’t wait to hear your review of the show, if you decide to share it. I just saw them in Buffalo on Sunday. Awesome stuff.
Whole album is amazing, Oddfather and Gemini are must-listens!
If you're going to review Petrucci, you should review his idol Steve Morse....Maybe "Tumeni Notes"!
Have a great time Doug! The first time I saw Mr. Petrucci was on the 2018 G3 tour as well and the song that really struck me live and made me look it up later was Glassgow Kiss. That song is such a beautiful arrangement. Also Dave LaRue is a killer player and fun to watch.

whole first LP is a masterpiece
@@andrejz8954 For sure. As much as I like Terminal Velocity, SA will always have a special place in my heart and remain my fav.
Seeing them today and I can’t wait to see JP and MP together again!!
I think you finally understand. And with my utmost respect, you heave heard many songs before but have never really known the interior binary srar power of Mike & John. Welcome to the family
Very much hope John will continue his tour in Europe!
I am going to see them 10-13 nyc, cant wait.
Following this instrumental route, it would be interesting to see a reaction on a Tony MacAlpine piece. He is both a talented guitarist and pianist and I guess he deserves some attention from your channel.
I'm coming to NYC tonight to see them too
Amazing album, the production, the precision, the quality of composing, just incredible.Come back to listen this album👌🏻…
JP's new track "Temple of Circadia" released just 3 weeks ago... silly video but incredible music!
Thanks Doug 🤘Enjoy the show. Maybe do an album review. I will definitely listen.
i think doug would love Acid Rain or When the waters Breaks from the Liquid Tension Experiment
Love it!! My favorite on the album is The Way Things Fall.
I absolutely adore you Doug!

Aside from the cigarette smoke at The Keswick, one great show. As good as I've seen in many, many years! It was a privilege. really.
You are lucky to have opportunity to see JP on stage with his solo staff. In France we just have to wait each Dream Theater tour.
Please give a report after……will be seeing them on the 21st…..can’t wait!
Th Oddfather is awesome! You need to check that one out. Then move on to some FATES WARNING...
You did end up picking the two most "classic" Petrucci compositions. There is actually quite a bit of variety on the album. I actually really enjoy "Out of the Blue" which as its name implies it's John playing the Blues, but in his own way.
Out of the Blue was probably my favorite track of 2020. And my favorite of his solo career. (Lost Without You is also amazing for similar reasons.)
it is indeed a happy song
I listened to the whole album just yesterday
I too saw the G3 gig, but here in the UK we had Uli Jon Roth instead of Phil Collen, unbelievable musicianship and guitar playing of the highest order.
PETRUCCI IS KING.. !!!! DOUG go Meet John tonight; get backstage; you'll love this guy..
Dave LaRue there. It seems time to react some Steve Morse tunes has come. Any Dregs' composition?
If John Petrucci was paid by the note I would happily hand over my hard earned cash. Enjoy the concert Doug. I wish he would visit Australia so I could go too.
Funny that there is a song from Billy Sherwood (bassist from Yes) with the same song title and Jordan Rudess plays keyboards on it.
From this album i like the "odd father" and "gemini", you should react to these.
Love petrucci! Glasgow Kiss is 🔥🔥🔥
Happy Song is what DT + Blink 182 mashup sounds like
Never heard Happy Song before myself, but part of it sounds like "All The Small Things" by Blink 182
I was thinking something similar, sounded like Prog Pop Punk to me.
and part The Who - Baba O'riley
Try to react sons of apollo sir, please. Band member are Mike Portnoy on drum, Billy Sheehan on Bass, Derek Sherenian on Keyboard, Bumblefoot on Guitar and Jeff Scott Soto on Vocal. Their music is Progressive Metal like Dream Theater.
Hey, Doug
It would be amazing to see you react to some early Dream Theater.
A few humble suggestions:
Scarred
Take The Time
Voices
Learning To Live
Petrucci, Portnoy and LaRue should form a trio and make music together as a band
These people actually SEE music!
SKY OVERTURE by Uli Jon Roth!!!!!!!!🎸
the key E Harmonic major btw
The overall tone of the album reminds me of Dream Theater’s 2nd album ‘Images and Words’. I guess it’s more melody based and more open chords then the newer stuff by DT. I recommend you listen to ‘Take the Time’ (actually every song is great).
I’m so interested in your reaction to The Mars Volta! The song Cygnus... Vismund Cygnus would be fantastic.
"I've got my keyboard." Jordan Rudess now watching.
Do a Neal Morse Band tune Doug!
The oddfather is my most favourite ❤️
If they got paid by the note they would be Trillionaires
