- Two moody slip jigs from the north-east of England, perfectly suited to this dark and wintery time of year. The first tune is a song melody "Gan to the Kye", and the second is a three part tune known as "Kissed Her Under the Coverlet". Both trad. More cittern music here louisbingham.b...
excellent what lovely tunes to wake up by, Thanks!
absolutely gorgeous stuff
Thank you!
Awesome, have to learn this
Great!
Good one
I remember watching my sister dance to music like this. Never could get the hang of slip jigs myself.
Me neither! There's something with the rhythm that's hard to get!
Brilliant! Adding to my Cittern tunes-to-do list!
Phenomenal
Many thanks
Nice!
Lovely tone off that.
You play it well

Cheers Fin!
Top stuff! Bravo👏
Many thanks
Thanks Louis. This is hypnotic. It would have been great to hear while smoking pot in the late1960s.
It's pretty good now 😁
♥️🤘♥️
Top notch stuff, getting inspired to buy a bouzouki....
Cheers, aye the bouzouki family of instruments are great fun!
Love your stuff. Where could I find scores for this kind of music?
Many thanks, not really sure about scores I'm afraid. I'll post on here if I ever get round to making some myself...
what tunings please? absolutely beautiful
Many thanks. I use GCGDG tuning with octave strings on the lower three courses
Hi Louis, the tuning I use on my Cittern is GDGDG. Can I ask why you have the D down to C? And any benefits you find or if you play in the GDGDG tuning. I really enjoyed your playing and the tunes. Thanks!
Always enjoy the art of someone playing nice music on a bouzouki or if you like a cittern. Not always sure what is the difference between a bouzouki and a cittern or an octave mandolin etc is. I own a Fender Irish Bouzouki, he owns a cittern and that one over there owns a octave mandolin and you can get about the same off of a 4-string tenor guitar. But set us down together with the same song in the same place on the same Sunday and lets have a go at it and see what makes noise and what makes music? I think it's all very much the same...but sometimes different, yes?
At my death I'll bleed out little musical notes all in a red form of color, maybe....maybe not! But my bouzouki will be sold and I really hope he or she plays the Cr_p out of it far beyond my ability to play as an old man today. Yep, he he just love music, don't you?
You're right that it's fundamentally the same instrument as a bouzouki or tenor guitar tuned GDAD - though I think a cittern has a shorter scale than a bouzouki, and an extra course of strings, either a low C/D or a high A/B depending on player's preference.
Great playing. Who made your cittern? I play guitar and mandolin and I’ve been thinking about getting a cittern
Many thanks. It's a Fylde, standard model arched top cittern. I played tenor banjo and guitar before this and have found it a great middle ground :)
@@LouisBinghamMusic thanks! I may end up saving up for one
This is better than Al Jolson singing 'Mammy'. Stringed instruments are essential to the West.
Anything is better than Al Jolson singing 'Mammy'.
Well except maybe Bob Dylan singing 'Must Be Santa',
yep that is the low point in modern musical history, no contest.
what kind (brand/model) of cittern?
Tis a Fylde, standard arch top cittern
What kind of string set are you using on your GCGDG tuning? Is your cittern a 560mm scaled?
No it's 596mm. The lowest three courses are octave strung so I've worked out my own custom set which I order from Eagle Music Shop.
@@LouisBinghamMusic Most cittern players custom their own particular sets, I do that too. Was just curious to know the actual widths of the strings. I don't use octaves on lower strings, since I find the lighter ones to miss the capo too often. I use 0.56w, 0,44w, 0,28w, 0,18 and 0,12 on my 650mm cittern, with DGDAD tuning.
Couldn't remember my gauges offhand, just had a look in my notebook:
52/24
42/16
26/10
16/16
12/12
@@LouisBinghamMusicthanks 💪
How is it tuned ? GDAD or GDAE ?
This instrument has five courses of strings, the tuning is GCGDG
@@LouisBinghamMusic ah ok ! Thank you
@@LouisBinghamMusic Are all the pairs tuned in octaves?
@@jonathanbanks9500 No, the highest two courses are in unison. I don't think you could get strings thin enough to have octaves above those
