I had a friend who treated her four yearlings like pets their whole life. I never saw four more nasty colts. These were difficult for her to "start" under saddle because they'd been trained to disrespect her. Shoving into her, nipping, not wanting to be tied, bla bla bla.....so far as to shoving their way through gates and fences. It was awful. She basically did nothing right with these four through ignorance. Nice looking colts too. They could've been started off correctly and would have been nice colts. She sold them off eventually and got herself a 17 yr old broke TB who started out nicely for her but has since become somewhat cheeky as well, due to the fact that she never rides him. Some people just don't realize that a horse is not a bicycle. You can't just set it aside for six months, get on one day and peddle off into the sunset. Long rant. Sorry.
Thanks for sharing, Barbara 🙂👌
That darn cat is a movie star!
He is quite the show stopper 🤩
Mustangs are of course a bit tricky.
Mine - without a lot of desensitizing - realized that anything I introduce is of no danger.
We went out into her world and she felt that she was in charge.
It took me months to establish trust and true leadership.
One big step was, she was attacked by another horse free running in the arena. I stepped in. That was for her a huge step.
But then also a lot of walks where I knew a scary mountain biker would come and she learned that I will protect her.
So glad you made this video - I have a coming yearling who is okay now for the trimmer, fly spray, grooming, leads and I’m starting to work on hard tying - then kicking him out with my other 4 to grow and as you say - be a horse. Thank you for helping me not feel guilty for not doing anything with him in between trims!
I'm glad Kiowa was never the type of spooker who lost his mind. More wary than anything. Right now the horseflies are so bad, he runs to me for protection since I'd swat them off with a pool noodle. He really loves that pool noodle. But since he's come home, we have re established our relationship based on trust and he looks to me whereas he didn't before.
For the horsefly’s - best product ever is Espana Silk Flyspray - it’s all natural and does nothing for stable flys but whatever is in there repels horsefly’s like nothing I have ever seen - they virtually take a hard pass!
I've definitely seen this with my 3 year old (mustang cross). He was a bottle baby, and his original owners did way too much desensitizing. I think he's a very confident horse anyway, but I've had to work very hard to get him to respond to anything humans do. It can definitely be dangerous. Your videos have helped so much, and it's gotten much better over the last year.
100% agreed. When we work with horses, we always have to make sure that they pay attention to what we are doing. Not good at all if they ignore us / what we're doing while we're interacting with them.
BTW: I love the tail of that cat 😻🐈
So practical. As always. Excellent.
Good information, nice definition! Thanks
Good one!! Thank you!
I was very fortunate ,Lisa was always very good on the trails. Even after 10 yrs off (between my and her health problems) I was able to bare back her in the pen. My new boy has been just as reliable, so far. Thank you for the informative video.
💯
Over desensitization and poor handling are the reasons why many trainers would much rather get a totally unhandled horse rather than either of those.
Totally in agreement with everything said
My friend boards my horse as well as a couple others. One is a red roan grade in his teens. His owner has no business owning a horse. I have seen her beat him in the trailer when he paws from anxiety and on the trail. She talks about him and treats him like shit. She's also terrified of horses so I have no idea why she has him. She only trail rides like once a year and does nothing else with him. And he is a nightmare. He will run over people at the gate. He tries to steal my mare away from me when I go to catch her. You can't move his feet in any meaningful way because he's been so "desensitized" that he'll ignore everything you do. Truly a nightmare that I hope leaves soon since the owner is 6 months behind on board 🙄
Thanks for sharing, Lindsay 🙂👌
👍🏻👍🏻
Good day all. Agree 100% Tim. Thank you Tim & Melinda for video. 😄😇
Makes sense.
