To be clear - when I say the games past SA2 miss the mark in some way, what I mean is they either have problems in the gameplay, or the story that keep them from being quite as good as the games I listed. A Sonic game can have great gameplay but a bad story, like Heroes or Colors. You might not care as much about story so your list of "best" Sonic games might differ from mine, but I want to take all aspects of a game into mind to decide which games I love most. Sorry if that makes me a bit of a purist, but I do still think most of the games post-SA2 are good. ^^

Ruby of Blue Have you played through Sonic Unleashed on PS3 or X360 yet? As an Adventure fan myself, it comes the closest to scratching that SA3 itch with a genuinely charming story, humans with good writing, gorgeous worlds and an alternate playstyle that is SEVERELY overhated by people who mindlessly buttonmashed through the game.
To be fair the boost formula is the exact opposite of the adventure formula. In every other way, it does scratch that SA3 itch but in gameplay it doesn't even come close to what SA3 would and should play like.

I personally have to disagree about the voice acting. I think all the english voices (except tails) are near perfect. They literally were the "dream cast" in my opinion. They were so expressive and brought out the characters. Granted they were synced poorly but I love their potrayals of the characters, mainly in sa2 and heroes imo. But its fine if u disagree.
I agree. I loved the original English cast. Ryan Drummond will always be Sonic, and the late Deem Bristow will always be Dr. Robotnik. David Humphrey will always be Shadow, and so on and so forth.
For me I find it necessary to change to Japanese voices only with the games starting in 2010 because of Roger's Sonic & other questionable VA choices in English that started there. Dreamcast & 4kids Eras were for the most part great with their English Voice Acting.
WaterKirby1994 Yeah, I only swapped to japanese after Boom. Since shadows current voice is miscast, not bad, just miscast. Plus the voice of infinite in japanese is both the voice of my favorite shonen protagonist and the current voice for Terry Bogard, both of which make him a perfect fit for a sonic game as a whole.

It's Rare to find Sonic Fans actually doing what a fan does, which is praising the Series and it generally makes me kinda depressed for this franchise

At least it was prior to 2010 when the direction became "Silly Cartoon Animal Series", which is why the 2010s were the worst decade for Sonic. We need that return to form & for the series to take itself seriously & not be the way it was misrepresented for the past 10 years.

@@vgames9207 Well I'm not counting crossovers. Although yes Sonic Colors, Sonic Lost World, The Boom Trilogy, Sonic Forces, & Team Sonic Racing were bad games. I'm completely unfamiliar with Sonic Dash existing, although Sonic Runners was supposed to be a cashgrab mobile phone game wasn't it? 2010s were easily the worst of the 3 Decades for the Sonic Series in terms of games.

Sonic Games generally had good stories in the 2000s decade, before the mistakes were made for the 2010s decade that turned the series into a complete joke. Pontac & Graff never should have been hired as writers because they had no knowledge of the series at all & have been ruining the stories in the series since Colors.

@Johannes Brahms Sonic 06, both Rush Games, Chronicles, & Black Knight are good examples of 2000s Sonic Games having good story other than Adventure 2 & Battle. I have never looked into either of the Rivals games & wasn't sure of whether or not I should count the 2 Riders games.
The reason why I love Sonic is because he's cool, fast, and heroic. When I was a kid, I used to think that a blue fast hedgehog who saves the world from a fat evil genius was way cooler than some plumber saving a princess every single time from a dragon, I still do. And his games were awesome. Sonic 1,2,3,& Knux, Adventure, Adventure 2, Unleashed, Generations, etc. I understand Modern Sonic is losing his mojo, but I'm pretty sure the next Modern Sonic game will be OUTSTANDING!
Yeah, while I am a huge Mario fan, too, I'll admit that he's pretty vanilla compared to Sonic (now Wario, on the other hand...). Mario himself didn't really become cool until the RPGs, ESPECIALLY the first three Paper Mario games (which I think did for Mario what the two Sonic Adventures did for Sonic, story-wise).
I saw a comment sometime back, that basically said "Oh boy, I sure do love that Sonic is not heroic anymore. he's much more entertaining as someone who in it for the compliments".

I think the only mariogames that compare to sa2 and sonic3 for me are galaxy1,mario and luigi2 and super paper mario.(never played the last one, I just really like the story. kinda hate the artstyle tho)
I want the next game to use the canon from the first 50 Archie comics, where humans and Mobians live on the same planet, in separate corners. I also want Boom's animation, Junio's design, and an open world that's kinda like a cross between Odyssey and BotW, where the regions all link together, but that's probably too much to ask.

I understand your preference for the Japanese dialogue in the Adventure games, which I won't argue with you on, but I personally prefer the English acting, partially because I prefer my characters to speak English, but I also prefer the English voices themselves. Also, the English dialogue got better as the series went on.
Woooooooow, I mean obviously people born after me have different childhood experiences, but... I never considered that someone might be young enough to *have a Dreamcast but not have yet heard of Sonic*.
Sonic and Sega are so intertwined for me I didn't know that was possible.

I really discovered sonic a couple years ago. I was always aware of sonic obviously but i just downloaded sonic 2 on my phone and I fell in love. Sonic is now one of my favourite video game franchises alongside metroid, Zelda and Mario.
I’ve never understood why but sonic just suits me perfectly.
Thank you! So much! Someone who finally realized that sonic games can't just have fun gameplay. It needs a story! People just seem to not care about the story and it sucks, because it was one of the things that made sonic great. I barely even played sonic games outside of the multiplayer, but i loved to watch the awesome stories and the great development. Sonic was so awesome and inspiring. I thought he was such an amazing character and had so much potential. I really hope sega will take more inspiration from the adventure games, and less from the 2D games, because i don't think they remember why 3D sonic was so great.
The problem is that Sega of America was left in charge of the series & without Yuji Naka's guidance they started screwing it up to please critics who were never going to be fans of the series. The fanbase got split by Boost Games, & then SoA made idiotic decisions when hiring for the 2010s Decade. From what I understand Sega of Japan has a much better understanding of the Sonic Series, although they abandoned it long ago in favor of other series like Yakuza. We can only hope we get to see a return to form for the series in the next few years with quality stories & gameplay with several characters controlling well in full 3D like we got in the Adventure Games.
The reason why I love him is not because he's a meme, but because he's an amazing, cool character, with great games. Sure, he had missteps (Forces, '06, Boom: Rise of Lyric), but so does every franchise.
I've always imagined Sonic's world as a combination of the American and Japanese canons. To me, Sonic lives alongside humans and anthropomorphs called "mobians", on a planet called Mobius. Mobius is actually Earth in the far future, after genetic warfare caused human-animal hybrids to be created and live alongside the remaining humans. Mobians and humans generally live in their own separate corners, and one such human, named Ivo Robotnik but mostly known as "eggman", wished to take advantage of the natural world the mobians live in to make profit. To do this, he captures local animals and some mobians and forces them to power robots, in order to search/mine for the Chaos Emeralds, powerful gems infused with energy left over from the bio-war. This mutating energy can cause life forms to become extremely powerful, but Sonic is more sensitive to it for some reason, probably to do with exposure to the emeralds early in life.
This arrangement allows for the coexistence of the Adventure games, 06, Forces, the Rush games, the Advance games, and the classics, with little to no conflict, and helps to make Sonic and friends feel less out of place in the Adventure games and 06.

I like SA2 english voice acting because it is so iconic.
I prefer cheesy English dialogues from Adventure series than jokes dry as hay from Sonic Colors and succeding titles (Ken Pontac & Warren Graff Era)

I love the japanese VA's as well but I usually keep English voices around because I like listening to the voices (and understanding them) more than reading. I wish that in the future we can have some better translations and a better cast (the 4kids and 1998-2004 cast were good though but I am not a fan of most of the current cast).
One point what made me love Sonic besides what you listed is these amazing cinematic moments Sonic games had, the intro for Egg Fleet or outrunning the truck in city escape are great examples. These add to the adventurous stories and levels in Sonic games.

Japanese Tails just made me look up what a Bernal sphere is.
And they say video games don't teach you anything.
Today I realized that the Ark is not, in fact, a Bernal sphere. It looks like it used to be one, but it got cut in half.

P.S. I also ran like Sonic in SA1 when I was 11.
Sonic has a lot of great characters if they’re done right and is one of those speed games that’s really fun and intense. That’s why I love sonic so much.

Your "how I got into Sonic" story reminds me of mine. Now, Sonic wasn't the first game I played (Super Mario World was, but it was Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest that made me a gamer), but Sonic Adventure was indeed the first Sonic game I really played (not counting an earlier, horribly botched attempt at Sonic the Hedgehog 2 when I was REALLY little, like 3 years old). I was instantly hooked, and, similar to your experience, that opening scene blew my mind a million times over. I was obsessed with Sonic since then, and I, too, came up with stories and drew Sonic and all that good stuff.
This is my story to a T. I loved playing StH 2 and Sonic & Knuckles as a kid but I was 3 and was horrible at it. My cousins and I still played at being Sonic, Tails and Amy though. My first real time playing was with SA2 and it blew me away. I didn't get to finish it until much later though because a freak storm killed our Dreamcast and I had spent most of my time playing in the Chao Garden instead of finishing the story lines. After that I dove into Sonic X and when that was over I ate up the comics like a starving animal. All of them. Even Fleetway. I just can't express how much this series means to myself and others yet it's always getting thrown under the bus cuz some Gen Xers prefer Classic Sonic gameplay over everything else this series has to offer.

This video really speaks to me, I loved this. Sonic Adventure was one of the first games I ever owned, and it absolutely changed my life. I think that game is a complete masterpiece, and to this day it's my favorite game in the series, and one of my favorite games of all time. The Adventure era games (SA1-Shadow) have meant so much to me, and they'll always hold a special place in my heart. It always makes me happy to hear other people's stories of what Sonic has meant to them.

I honestly think unleashed has great writing with sonic befriending chip, building up to dark Gaia and having a good payoff
I agree the Japanese cast is overall better, but man, I really wish Ryou Hirohashi had been cast as Tails earlier. She is by far his best voice, and much better than his Adventure VAs (and of course, the Adventure games had the best stories the series will probably ever have).

Actually the low routes are often better/faster. It's usually a mix of high and low that yields the fastest result that requires experimentation and multiple playthroughs. For example some people think Flying Battery 2 in Mania is a really long stage, but actually you can cut the length of the stage in half by always taking the bottom routes when presented with a split in the path. I thought it was really cool that they designed it like that.

Unleashed had a good story, it's probably the only modern Sonic game ( from 06 to forces) that had a fantastic story.
Sonic and the secret rings and Black Knight have has a better story than Unleashed.

Superhedgehog 64 I disagree. Unleashed has good writing but Tails is out of character in that game. There's also not much climax and plot in the middle of the game. It's simply just restore all gaia temples, nothing else to it. I felt like they went a bit top safe with it.
lennux ND1 yeah I do agree unleashed has more of a simple story compared to black knight and sa2 and secret rings and adventure but at least the story isn't confusing and too dark like 06 and shadow the hedgehog or childish and lazy like colors to lost world.
Superhedgehog 64 06 had a good story and wasn’t any more dark than SA2. You can’t get much darker than a child being gunned down and the storyline itself has the same epic and cool factor that SA2’s did. I can only think of Shadow’s story being particularly dark (as Sonic’s is a character piece on Elise and her growth as a person tied into the other storylines, and Silver’s doesn’t show enough of the future to be especially dark) and I don’t see anything in it that is more dark than SA2’s storyline.
The idea that 06’s story went too far whereas SA2’s story didn’t is mistaken. They’re equal in their tone.
I’d even say 06 has more light moments because of Sonic’s relationship with Elise having many peaceful and calm moments where they just talk and get to know each other.
06 still has plenty of funny moments in its story with Omega, Eggman, Silver and Amy and they are all just as well executed as the humor in SA2 is.
This video perfectly explains why I love Sonic. He's my favorite fictional character of all time and I've looked up to him and his friends since I was a kid. I fell out of my obsession with the series after 2010 and it wasn't until the beginning of this year when I played Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 for the first time that I started remembering why I loved the games. Here's to hoping the new Sonic game coming out in 2022 will restore the franchise to its former glory!
I can really relate how you felt. I was introduced via Sonic Classic Collection & Rush Adventure. Ever since then, I generally fell in love with Sonic Mania, the Adventure games & Heroes!

sonic adventure (pc version) was also my introduction to sonic too. So many fun memories. Then I would play sonic and knuckles 3 as well. Sonic and knuckles 3 is my fav game to this day.

I miss Japanese feeling Sonic series we got prior to 2010. So many of the characters & the overall tone felt like what you would encounter in Shonen Anime & it's unfortunate how all depth to the series was abandoned to please Western Critics. Tikal, Cream, Vanilla, Gmerl, Babylon Rogues, & anyone introduced in Rush Adventure were just abandoned, while Chaos was reduced to always being the villain taken directly from Sonic Adventure. Sonic & Tails were reduced to parodies of themselves, & I really want a return to form for the series.
@@WaterKirby1994 to be fair,Tikal probably wouldn't have came back even if the writers didn't change,and they tried to bring the Babylon rogues back in free riders but that Game was terrible
@The Sega General Returns I have been complaining about Sonic's Friends & how we haven't been able to play as them for the past dozen years. I have been complaining about the lack of serious plots for the past 6 years. At this point I don't think Sega even knows who Sonic is supposed to be anymore.
As for the glory days for Sonic that will always be 1999-2004 to me. Leaving the Adventure Way of doing things was a mistake & the 1 time they tried to return to it the game was cursed by leaving the safety of GameCube. Releasing exclusively for the console manufacturers that had yet to get the Adventure Games & were home to savage critics was at least 30% of why Sonic 06 failed.
The rest of why it failed was because of severe mismanagement that required it be severely rushed for what was then unfamiliar next gen hardware. We can only hope that Project 2021 learned from those mistakes & doesn't release for PS5 & Xbox SX or it's doomed as well. 06 was also being made with less than half a team, which the situation of near bankruptcy the series faces now is also causing.
The Sonic Series is practically on death's door now after an entire decade of being severely mismanaged. The "Just Sonic Mentality" was a mistake from the start that never should have been allowed to become the New Normal after Unleashed. Let's not forget the braindead decision of hiring lead writers with no knowledge of the series for Colors-Team Sonic Racing & letting them turn the series into a parody of itself.
2006 wasn't Sonic's downfall year, the big game of that year was just used as a tool to justify Sonic's real downfall that happened in 2010. Now it will take a miracle to save Sonic & Sega after how badly the 2010s hurt Sonic's reputation.

Around the time I started High School, I briefly lost interest in not just Sonic, but other video game franchises like namely Crash and Spyro, because I became more interested in music and bands, but got my interest in those 3 back when I turned around 15, which remain today.
I love the original English voice actors ya wish there was proper translation from Japanese to English. I wish the original the English voice actors would return to reprise their roles.
Next time someone asks me why I am a Sonic fan I'm showing them this video.
I copied and pasted this from another video but here are my thoughts on how to "fix" Sonic.
Actually speaking of Megaman I actually thought the best way to revive Sonic is to take a page out of Megaman's book and have multiple series/timeline that are handeled by different teams, this will allow some experimentation and risking taking, but at the same time each time can focus on one or two aspects of sonic instead of trying to cram all the gimmicks of the series into each game. I think Sonic Forces doesn't work because it tried to cram Classic, Modern, and Sonic Deviant Fan art (The create a character) All into it, and the pieces didn't mesh.
Speaking of timelines, I'd actually do a bit of soft reboot and make Full One Remakes off Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 similar to Link's Awakening, Resident Evil, and Final Fantasy VII. I think things started to go wrong with Sonic Heroes because Sonic Team wanted to branch out so they made that instead of Adventure 3. While I understand the desire (And personally like Heroes despite it's flaws) It started the trend of not making up the Mind of whether the lore of Sonic matter or not. So I think we should have remakes of Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 but THEN completely redo the timelime and do SA3. Maybe incoporate elements of the last game. (Like try a version of Sonic 06 that is actually finished and change some things around since I think of lot of people still like the characters like Chaotic, Silver, Blaze, Omega, Cream, etc.) This also means that if Sega does want different things (Like their desire to try Heroes) They have other Timelines and teams to do it, instead of Sega feeling they have to pump out Sonic Games from the same time Year after Year.)
I personally think there are some great gameplay and story possibilities from taking an Adventure Formula with current gen Tech. Like what if there was a mechanic where you can speed run the game, and skip entire sections of the story like a 3D Metroidvania but the mastery is in mastering Sonic's Momentum in a 3D parkour, (But at the same time you can enjoy the story by going the "canon" route.) Plus with Better Online and Mobile game connections the Chao Garden section of the game has huge potential as well.)
I'm with you to also try more Sonic Fangames being official as one of the "timelines." (Check out a Fan AU called "Sonic Skylines.")

Its so weird, the 1st sonic game i played was with my cousin on his ps2, it was shadow the hedgehog but my 1st sonic game that I owned was sonic and all stars racing transformed, it was back in 2012 and I just got a ps3 and oh lord I was very bad at it 😂 (at the time)

I did the same thing with the toys, only with random toys. I had Bob the builder as Sonic, a raccoon as Tails and Big Bird as Rouge. (Yes, Big Bird as Rouge.)
I don't know much about the 3D games, but I hold the Genesis trilogy, CD and Mania in high regards. I love what you can do with the physics and momentum, how well the level design complements them, how you have the option of exploring or speed running, all while doing it to awesome music and bright and colourful original stages, and what I'm about to say has nothing to do with the gameplay, but I love the inspiration Sonic took from old cartoons. His design being based off of characters like Mickey Mouse and Felix the Cat with the mussel, white gloves the rubber hose animations on him, Robotnik's old design resembling that of a hannah barbera character with his yellow neckerchief seperating his head from his body, the grey buckles on his pants, and his Russian name Ivo referencing the classic Russian cartoon villains and the new Sonic Mania Adventures shorts seem to be taking the classic cartoon approach which I love.
Honestly, I'm not a fan of the Mania Adventures shorts. True, you can't really complain too much about a free short cartoon but it seems to misunderstand Sonic as a Saturday morning cartoon comedy rather than shounen action Sonic has always been.

Why the heck do people see Classic Sonic as some Cartoon? I blame that 1 DiC Cartoon with Scratch & Grounder for giving so many people the wrong impression about the Sonic Series in the 90s. Now if you were to refer to Sonic as being a cartoon, it would have to be the Western equivalents of Shonen Anime like Swat Kats, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, & Spiderman series. The characters themselves feel like they fit Shonen Anime Tropes & we all know how common having Spiky or abnormal color hair was in anime back in the day. Tails is the kid genius, Amy the deredere schoolgirl who became a crazy fangirl after CD with hints of Tsundere for examples of the Shonen Tropes. Sonic Adventure only added more of those like Tikal being a priestess, Big being a fishing hermit, & Chaos became a Kaiju after obtaining all 7 Emeralds.
The Adventure Games were logical next steps in advancing the series after 3K, with the 1st Adventure Title expanding on that story from 3K. The Characters were given redesigns to no longer be bound by 16-Bit appearances & look cooler in 3D, & there was additionally a timeskip. Controls in Sonic Adventure for Sonic, Tails, & Knuckles feel like 3K moved into 3D with a few tweaks like Sonic having homing attack, Tails replacing Spindash with a Tailspin attack, & Knuckles replacing his spindash with various punching attacks. The number of playable characters was doubled & each was given their own playstyle to best utilize their abilities in full 3D. Personally I really miss the Shonen Anime tone the series had prior to 2010.

Now that would be interesting to see but that would essentially be a Sonic Adventure 3 honestly. SA1 was a somewhat open world type of game similar to Super Mario Odyssey. Well I mean technically Sonic 06 but uh... lol
@@decadentgamer3108 id still hope SA3 is different enough from the first two to be its on distinct game thats still in the "Adventure" style, but id still like a really good quality set of remakes of the first two SA games, for sure.
even 06 could potentially be remade/remastered to be somewhat decent if they actually did a good job. i mean, fanmods have already made the game much much better, so imagine a full-on studio working on something like that. it could be good, but im not super confident they *would* do it unfortunately..

As a Japanese player, I actually prefer the English voice acting in the early games lol. The Japanese voices are good as well, but the English voices match the characters a lot more. What my eyes see matches with what my ears hear more, if that makes sense.
Sonic IS my favorite franchise ever I don't care what people like IGN or Egoraptor say that "Sonic was never good" or "All the 3D games are trash" cause like you said that's not true. In my opinion the main series games that I don't like nor care about are 06 and Forces. The rest of the series have games that are Decent - Phenomenal imo incase anyone's wondering my 5 favorite Sonic games are 5. SA1 4. Sonic CD 3. Sonic3K 2. SA2 1. Unleashed.

Sonic gets to much hate nowadays which is a shame because Sonic has great titles also, People hate on games past SA2, while I do think 06 and Boom are terrible the games past SA2 are still great, I mean I don't think Shadow the Hedgehog is that bad of a game especially Unleashed, Colors, Generations and Mania are all great games, overall I love Sonic, and I hope he becomes amazing once again

SUBSCRIBED INSTANTLY. Well thought out and edited video (I might be biased, because I had the same experiences with Sonic you had). But this video really hit home for me.
SA2 was my first Sonic game on the GC. Then i had a roll with the Sonic collection on the xbox.
Regarding the voice acting, I think the English voice actors are largely perfectly-good actors; they were just deprived of context and maybe given poor direction. I've heard it said that for SA1's dub they were basically only given the lines, in text, in complete isolation from any visuals, and a very general emotional direction (i.e. "say this line in your character's voice and sound happy/sad/angry/etc."), so the dub of SA1 at least IS bad but I wouldn't say it's the actors' fault.
You're one of the few UA-camrs that speads praise to the Sonic franchise over spreading hate and that I truly respect that with a passion
