  • Have you ever been to the North Sea? 🌊 The North Sea, notorious for its wild storms, towering waves, and unpredictable tides, is a perilous challenge for sailors. The harsh weather, coupled with dense maritime traffic, hidden shallows, and oil platforms, turns navigation into a nerve-wracking dance. Captains constantly face the threat of collisions and groundings as they battle the forces of nature. In this maritime arena, the true mastery of seamanship is revealed, where only the best can safely navigate the raging North Sea.

My dad works on the North Sea. The weather is indeed almost always this terrible and it is indeed very dangerous. Accidents, sometimes even fatal, are unfortunately very common and only a moment of inattention can lead to being thrown overboard from the deck or getting seriously injured by the ship's machinery. Several of such cases took place as recently as last month.

I went through the North Sea while being deployed for Desert Shield/Desert Storm.
Our battalion loaded its equipment on to merchant marine ships in Bremerhaven Germany. Upon completion of loading our unit was picked for volunteers to accompany that equipment along its journey, I volunteered. I spent 32 days aboard a merchant marine ship laden with 5 ton, 2.5 ton, 1/4 ton vehicles, tanks. APCs etc. We left Germany the day after Thanksgiving, dinner at port was THE BEST I’d ever had in the military, we sailed through the North Sea and around all the way to the Gulf.
I did not experience one bit of sea sickness, but my buddy did. I did not know people could actually turn green whilst still alive, but they can lol.
As soon as we got into calmer waters the captain of the ship had us join his crew and learn our duties during emergency operations such as putting out a fire, deploying life boats etc.
There were male and female sailors on that ship, and at the time they were all making over 100 grand a year. I chose the wrong career, as an E4p I was earning right around $1300 a month with base pay, BAQ, and hazardous duty pay.
The food aboard the ship was the absolute best anyone could ask for, and was available 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
The ships store opened 1 time a week, and as deployed soldiers we were allowed to write checks to purchase whatever we wanted, which I was very gracious for. I bought every carton of Marlboro 100 reds they had and 1 bottle of Jameson, which I snuck into my duffel bag and did not open until the end of hostilities, which we all toasted our success and drank IN SAUDI ARABIA, which is a huge no no in that country.
We sailed through the Suez Canal to reach the Gulf eventually and leaving the country of Germany in November reaching the Middle East in December I was literally shocked at the difference in temperatures, it was HOT.
We spent a week and a half at port unloading equipment and then finally rejoined our unit in a giant warehouse at port. 2 days later we boarded a bus and traveled for hours out into the desert eventually being basically dumped onto the side of the highway and then boarding deuce and a half’s and traveling miles into the desert before setting up shop along side MSR Green.
2nd CosCom 2nd ACR 7th Corps. The rest is history.
But I will NEVER forget that 32 day trip spent aboard a merchant marine ship as an Army E4P, and from what I was told, I’m glad I volunteered as the rest of our unit flew to SA and spent that month on cots in a hot warehouse waiting on us to arrive.

@@thecannaiseur1535He's referring to his balance and his inability to maintain it on dry land. When you're working out in the ocean, you eventually become accustomed to constant movement of the waves, in order for your body to remain upright and not constantly falling over. This is colloquially known as "Getting your sea legs". Subsequently though, if you've been at sea for lengthy periods of time, when you actually return to dry land, the lack of movement under your feet can cause some people to have to face a readjustment period where their balance is continuously off-kilter for awhile as their mobility adapts back to walking on dry land. Hope that helps.😊

My Father, Grandfather, and Great Grandfather were all Naval Captains. My Grandfather was part of the Atlantic Convoys in WW2 and torpedoed twice. My Father worked with the North Sea oil rig divers (and the Special Forces divers) ....... When I was 16, he got permission to take me on board for two weeks because my mother was too ill to look after me. I couldn't believe how insanely rough the sea was. So much kudos to the men that work here.

My Grandfather was first Atlantic Convoys and then was moved to the convoys into Russia. He always described the Russian people as "brave, hard working, and kind".

Remember, an amount of water the same volume as you is about the same weight as you. Water has a lot of strength and can push you around easily!

    • @whats0my0agenda
      @whats0my0agenda 8 місяців тому +1

People's densities can vary greatly depending on factors like body composition (muscle mass tends to be denser than fat) and air in the lungs (air has much lower density than water). So, a highly muscular person could be lighter than the same volume of water while a person with high body fat could be heavier than the same volume of water.

It doesn't withstand all the time. I had a family friend that worked on board ships like this until on a stormy night it tipped over. Him and a few of his crew members lost their life that night; their bodies never found. I'm good staying off boats/ships.
