A couple of times in Vietnam we were served Horse at the chow hall back in the 70's because there was a meat shortage. It is not to bad but you need to cook it to med to med well because it is bloody but it is very lean with a decent taste of course they were making burgers and meat loaf most of the guys did not know and I did not have the heart to tell them what they ate. I know because I am a country boy and could tell the difference. Nathan remember that the Russian meals limit preservatives and so they tend to use a lot more fat and grease to preserve with than we do in the US Thank you for NOT telling Phil what it is until after he had the horse! That was the type of true answer and taste response I have been asking for. Great job guys. Keep it up
Thanks for your service. My father also served in Vietnam and said there were times when food couldn't be brought in and you would eat whatever was available and be grateful for it. I think I would take horse meat over the S. Vietnamese rations that were shared with him, or the dog meat some of the locals sold in sandwiches.
@@charlestaylor253 I actually have! I thought it was hilarious back about '71 or so I went into the chow hall for lunch. Everyone was saying how bright a color they were and how they did not think it was beef, maybe buffalo. I just kept my mouth shut. Being an old farm boy I knew right away what were were eating and I am sure 1/2 the battalion would have lost it right there at the tables if I told them. The only thing I ever said was the following day to a couple of the grunts ...I asked them if they knew why cowboys never name their horses..smiled and walked away. Still don't know if they ever got it. Thank you for your service my brother. as you know never ask questions you might not want to know the answer to
well. Is make sense, when you add beef in casha. Dry buckwheat porridge and juicy beef stew. No one eats this separately. And no. It's not horse meat, it's just beef stew. Why you can be sure? Horse meat cost more.
Funny I have a friend who served in the Soviet army and sometimes we get together and watch these ration reviews but his son from his first marriage is still in Russia and serves in the army tho is kid is approaching retirement age he was talking to him and said about watching ration reviews firstly that's how we got our Russian rations he sent us a case of them but he also told me about his trick to heat them he keeps a metal spatula that he cut off handle and threaded the end so it screws into a nut in a hand carved wooden that he puts the tray on and put it over the stove or fire that way you can easily get if off and on the heat this is his invention when he trained troops in survival when I was easting alot of the rations
Rather than heat those rations on a stove, chuck them unopened into water and boil for about 8-10 mins. Nothing burns and it's an urban legend that they explode. Water doesn't get over 100⁰ unlike an actual fire which does, and will explode unopened ration cans lol.
I really liked the look of the ration package. Overall this one seemed lower quality then some of the others maybe they cut cost on this run. Mystery meat is always fun lol. Awesome review Nathan.
I had a horse steak in Brussels and it was literally the best red meat I've had to date. I actually liked it better than Australian wagyu, although I haven't had the chance to taste Japanese wagyu yet - and I assume Japanese wagyu is the best red meat there is.
Your assumption is correct as verified by 2 of my friends that have been stationed in Japan. I have also personally had Japanese A2 Wagyu burgers and it was the best burger I have ever had.

The fat is a preservative but it is also a huge caloric intake that is really needed in the northern parts of Russia and the former Soviet Union cold climate. They eat a lot of fat and would be drinking that. Since that’s horse this pack was probably meant for the Mongolian side of Russia.
I thought you were going to add water to the kasha to rehydrate it while it heated. Maybe it needed some of the seasoning or to be paired with the stewed meats. Keep them coming. Good review Nathan
I always remember the color difference between the alcohol wipes as White is the color of your skin (many of us, anyway) and the Green is color of the plastic ware
Yes, that's a stewed beef - тушёная говядина or говяжья тушёнка. Surely not a horse meat which is eaten in some regions of Russia and can be тушёнка as well, but hardly you can find stewed horse meat in those rations packs. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tushonka
If you do not insist that you have to use the matches provided in the ration, you could use a lighter designed for pipes - the flame-jet will light the fuel-tab much easier.

I'd have a hard time, with the horse meat. But,I've eaten venison, elk, and bison. Rabbit, squirrel and so on. So it wouldn't be too much of a difference.
From my experience up here, deer meat but scaled up makes horse meat. That includes the taste variables changing. Moose though, that's where we reach the goal, creamy stew of moose and potatoes and I'm in heaven, the fresher the better mm mm. Love horses but their meat isn't very universally able to make food with, it's best masked like that, put in lasagna or whatnot.
Venison when prepared and cooked properly is fantastic, I actually love deer jerky, its super lean and filling. Bison is pretty good too, sweeter than cow interestingly.
I ordered a Russian ration and didn't even know it would come with that chocolate thing. So I was excited to find it then beyond disappointed when both of them were broken. And there was weird dishes in there I haven't seen in other rations, I just wanted to try that buckwheat kasha. The apple jam was great, the rest was a disappointment.
I hate to admit it but horse is better than beef. In the 60's before they outlawed it in California the schools used it in their lunches. buckwheat porridge normally should look like this. it must be dry and crumbly. butter or other fat is added to it to soften
A great ration for when you're out horsin' around
I see what you did there 😏
my google translator (on an android phone) says that " "говядина тушеная" is "stew beef"

In the Kumamoto area of Japan, raw horse meat is a specialty.
The beef patty was just rough ground with more gristle and such in it.
No, it's just bad beef.
Horse meat is actually pretty good.
