- The two existing episodes are the oldest surviving examples of a multi-episodic British drama production, and some of the earliest existing examples of British television drama at all.
During the telerecording of the second episode, an insect landed on the screen being filmed, and can be seen on the image for several minutes.

Came here from Professor Simon Holland...
Same : )
Same :-)
I remember watching this when I was 11. I remember the scene where he'd changed completely into a plant and was hanging in fronds from the ceiling in Westminster Abbey (I think). Scared me frondless.
Do you remember the broadcast breakdown during the final episode, in the Abbey?
Also, can you recall the cast taking a bow at the end of the story?
best you can do is seek out the script book published by Penguin. It is a great read, and includes a few stills from the series, including the creature. It should satisfy your curiosity! I imagine it's extremely rare now, but well worth the effort. All three books should be reprinted pronto with stills.
Very, very pleased to note that the insect has (very nearly) gone. Congratulations to whomever cleared up the tape. Oh for the other four episodes!
thanks - i didnt realise and what a shame - a brilliant series - i`ll never forget the melting arm sequence - dunno what version it was
Only two were ever recorded...see description above...thanks for your enquiry :)
They only ever recorded two Bill...thanks for your comment :)
There’s a reason why people call this the worst telerecording of all time. And to think, this is the digitally restored version!
Quatermass sounds like a typical weird name for a quark. Maybe that´s its origination.
The origin of the name 'Quatermass' is on record.. Nigel Kneale simply looked into the phone directory for a distinctive name.
I watched it so I can die in peace now.
sorry no i cant - it was in black and white and i think it was a geezer sat at a desk - but i know that doesnt help - ive downloaded most of the quatermass stuff but having not watched hardly any of it yet...will let you know if i find it - a defining moment of my childhood it was - thanks again
It's odd that it is said that the missing episodes were "lost." They were actually recycled for the minerals on the film. The episodes posted here are actually the ones that were lost, They didn't get recycled because they were misplaced at the time the rest of the episodes were binned.
Actually, the final four episodes were never recorded. The first two were recorded (possibly for a potential sale to CBC in Canada, for whom 16mm reduction prints were made) but due to severe technical problems with the second the recordings were halted. Be aware that you might view episode two on here and think "Well, it looks OK to me" but remember that you're looking at a copy ripped from a DVD that had extensive digital restoration work carried out on it.
Duncan Lamont playing Carroon, is in the film of Quatermass and the pit, playing the guy who tries to drill through the bulkhead of the spaceship and is possessed by the martian hive mind, i think. I'm pretty sure Peter Bathurst playing Charles Green also appeared in Dr Who.
09:48 The nursing sister is played by Stella Richman, who later became a very notable TV producer in the UK.
Can you remember any more details? I could perhaps search it out?
PRIMITIVE sets THE BBC Spent no expense or imagination on cardboard cut outs and the sets too!!
at 32 mins police inspector is holding a model rocket very like Elon Musk's Starship. this is in 1953.....
34:42 Why Hello, Posh Lady Announcer...
have you got episodes 3 4 5 and 6
they are lost forever unfortunately, they were never recorded onto tape by the bbc
The full storyline of The Quatermass Experiment was incorporated into the 1955 motion picture, right?
ragemanchoo82 they changed the ending for the movie and removed some of the subplots but in essence the story is the same
Where's the fly?
It appears at 19:15 at 10 o'clock and leaves 40 seconds later at 7 o'clock. BTW I don't think it's a fly. Any guess what it might be?
Heck, it reappears at 20:20 and 22:25.
