I think them closing took everyone by surprise and the most shocking is the fact that all their platforms have disappeared at the same time. I used to watch their UA-cam videos and loved Vanessa’s gentle and enthusiastic tone. It’s sad that they just left with no trace and makes me worried on the why it happened this way. If you have used No. 7 wax in the past, you will find that the wax manufactured by CalWax and sold as CB2 (Porter, Northwood, and Hive + Honey have it to have a few) is identical to what 16/17 sold as No. 7 wax. While Sixteen Seventeen’s other formulas were exclusive to them, this one was almost certainly not. Biochem major and fellow candle business owner and user of this wax myself. I’ve bought it from 16/17, Northwood, and Porter, as well as spoken with the manufacturer representatives at CalWax, their supplier. It’s not gone. Thanks for the great video, Jeff. I hope to do one outlining this more in detail for everyone too to get the info more out there because I know this is a popular wax.
I had called them with concerns. I was told not to worry, they were going to start purchasing their vessels from a US manufacturing company but they would be comparable to the current vessels. I spent a substantial amount of money on the sale based on that reassurance. The fact that there’s no resource available to print the Safety Data Sheets for all the fragrances and Perfumers base is concerning but a lesson to print ASAP. Overall, a huge huge learning lesson on so many levels for me. The fact that it was Women Owned and a Small Business (I live in a tiny town so always thinking about the importance of support to small business) was a couple reasons why I DID start to use them in the first place. Lessons learned. I do understand the concern for the owner etc but with that said, does not negate the fact that a factual explanation along with a place to get pertinent product information could have been established.
They reassured me a year ago they were replacing the lavender vessel they discontinued with a different lavender but they never did. I hate that they are closing. I wish them the best.

I have read in various places that some are upset at 1617 for how they shut their doors. I didn't order from them personally but I do understand how one might have feelings of negativity towards that situation. However, I would say from decades business experience , if a business disappears off the face of their known landscape overnight without any warning and becomes a ghost to everyone... then something fairly serious happened to the point that they don't want to be located. I've seen this business behavior caused by a few things such as key players having serious health issues and suddenly rolling up their carpet or if they have major legal issues such as bankruptcy or divorce and even from theft/embezzlement. We may never know why they did things this abruptly and so throughly erased themselves but we do know that both Business and life can be brutal . God bless them thru whatever trauma they may be experiencing and I truly hope and pray everyone in that scenerio is ok.
Their wax formally known as Soy Bliss (can’t remember which name they changed it to) is similar to CB2 wax available from Northwood, Sunshine candle, and Swans Candle . Also their Calle 23 FO is similar to Peche De Vigne from Scent Memory, and Black Tie Barn has dupes for Mojave (Death Valley), and Alastair (The Mob).
Last comment on this ..but as we face suppliers struggling with a difficult economy I do wish that suppliers would take into consideration they are part of SOMEONES business. Not coming down on them but suppliers know that they are leaving a business and should let those that buy from them get an end of business/order date to allow those most dependent on them to adjust. They did say on their site they were “catching up on orders and ready to have a great 2024.” Prior to the closing down announcement.
Great advice. Jeff, you were the first person I found who was willing to share information about candle making. This led to me purchasing wicks from you. Vanessa at 16/17 was the second person. She would share vessel, wax and wick combination suggestions. Wishing her and all her employees the best!
This is devastating to me. Their virgin jungle is a beautiful scent and a best seller for me. Does anyone know of another scent that is similar to virgin jungle? So sad!!!that
This is too much. I’m distressed by so much closures. This is why I don’t depend on small suppliers. I made the choice to only use vessels, fragrances and waxes that are available in multiple suppliers.
I wasn't surprised since they had been doing deep discounts on their vessels and didn't reply to any of my emails asking what was going on. And while I hope Vanessa and team are okay, there is a lack of transparency that I'm very disappointed in. I saw the writing on the all and had emailed asking if they were discontinuing vessels, no reply. I emailed asking how the change to a US supplier of vessels would affect certain vessel designs, and that our branding is significantly affected when we rely on specific vessels, no reply. They sent out a 15% discount email this weekj, and when I clicked to shop, their website said they weren't taking orders due to ' the amazing demand from their recent sales.' They said they were moving locations and that they have a new US manufacturer now. All of this does not add up and I wish we had been given a transparent update so we could plan accordingly and buy the supplies we need. But, I learned not get all of my supplies from just one supplier. Big lesson here.
As a newer customer it is sad to see them suddenly close up shop like this. Also local, just 25 mins down hwy 4 from them and have visited their showroom 2x. Someone in the fb group alluded to the business being in California, but more specifically in the San Francisco Bay Area and wondered if that contributed to their decision. Im sure it didn't help, (Vanessa - Martinez is still an affordable business incubator location with plenty of commercial space). Not gonna knock the decision, what I will say is it's completely unfair to your customer base to disable your digital footprint. To Jeff's point, it is hard to pivot or get creative when things like scent profiles are no longer viewable thereby allowing your customers the ability to search for possible comparable products or custom blends. So for that, I do find the action selfish. All the best, and I hope Rose lands on her feet. She's a doll.
So sad to find out about this. Their oils were so good, and I use a few of them. Thank you for these facts when it comes to our business, especially regarding wicks! Goodness, the whole testing again on figured out signature scents.
I was shocked to hear they were closing. I built my candle line with their vessels, wax and some of their fragrances. Unfortunately I could not make sales. I have given a lot of candles to family and friends. I enjoy candle making but I couldn’t make a go of it as a business.

I hope everything is okay with them but it didn’t give our small businesses time to adjust. I feel like they’ve known for awhile. Just a gut feeling. It has me wondering if I should switch my jars to a more universal one that I can purchase from multiple places. You never know what company is next 😩
This is extremely sad and something that just blindsided us. Especially when the last time I seen them was on IG Live promoting the new waxes. I remember she said she was taking a long awaited vacation to Europe I believe. I hope everything is ok and those that worked there can be able to sustain and find other work.
UPDATE: HIVE AND HONEY sent out a email today. They WILL be carrying TWO of the 16/17 waxes .. # 7 and #9. They are also working on the DUPES of the 16/17 fragrances.
One of my favorite Fragrance Companies closed their doors ( Natures Fragrance). They had several oils that were either exclusive to them or I am unable to find them elsewhere. The owner had health issues and needed to close. While I understand it..there are some really good blends that I have made from their oils. This wont be completely life altering as wax melts are not my full time job. But, I see how this could affect a business that depends on their products. Lesson learned and I will be looking for alternatives as I go along.

I was heartbroken. As a small candle maker I used their Grand Domme oil and literally, literally can’t find anything that resembles it at all. If anyone knows any oils out there that is familiar to 16/17 Grand Donme please recommend. It was my 2nd top seller in my business 😞
Extremely abrupt exit which leaves room for concern. I've always ordered products from them to make candles but recently I purchased materials (FO's and bases) from them specifically to make soap and perfumes. I don't know the safety ratios now to make soap and perfumes because the information has been wiped-out....just like that! I don't know how to use the bases so I am not sure what I will do with them. The fragrance oils I have I can always use in candles with waxes from other suppliers; however, I won't know the fragrance notes to inform customers. Crazy! It must have taken a tragedy to exit (vanish) they way they did so I am prayerful they will get through whatever it is that lead to this.
Depending on which fragrance oil, i have some of the IFRA guidelines documented. I built a spreadsheet of all ifra based on FOs i used and i have quite a few from them. if you send me which FOs i can send you the IFRAS i have documented.
Me being nosy it’s turns out they files for bankruptcy chapter 7 so which mean there is high chance they will be back. When you file chapter 7 you have to stop all sales. I have seen a business do this and opened again with a few months.
Hive and Honey is getting #7 and #9 waxes in they said as for #3 #1 they are still working on those. Black Tie barns Rebal Rose smells identical to Mayfield.

I am rebranding my 8 oz line due to supply issues. Switched to a jar i could find multiple places and on alibaba. Fragrances are rough cuz theyll all require retesting
I recently tested their No 1 wax (5 day cure) and it was AMAZING. I was really convinced in switch my wax to theirs and then this happens….suck but I hope that they’re okay
I purchased for the 1st time and they shorted me a package of Wickes and 25lbs of wax. How can I get my money back. I spent almost 300. I emailed them, and everything came back undeliverable. I am pretty mad.
Issue a charge back to your credit card company or bank. Include a copy of your order for documentation and copies of the returned emails and the email announcing their closure.
I am sorry that they were going through hardship but the way the handled it was horrible. I placed an order on 1/17, asked for status 1/23 and was told the order was going to ship “next week”. Next thing I know they closed. I lost my money and have no way of contacting them.
You can issue a charge back on the method of payment by disputing the transaction. Check with the bank/credit card statement online and dispute that way.

I was surprised by this when I got the email. I was under the impression that they were moving! Sad day ☹️ I loved their fragrance oils so much.

The M12 will be in the US and with more suppliers. I really hope its soon, I love that wax myself. I wish I had more details on it.

I purchased for the 1st time and they shorted me a package of Wickes and 25lbs of wax. How can I get my money back. I spent almost 300. I emailed them, and everything came back undeliverable. I am pretty mad.
Issue a charge back to your credit card company or bank. Include a copy of your order for documentation and copies of the returned emails and the email announcing their closure.

I am sorry that they were going through hardship but the way the handled it was horrible. I placed an order on 1/17, asked for status 1/23 and was told the order was going to ship “next week”. Next thing I know they closed. I lost my money and have no way of contacting them.

You can issue a charge back on the method of payment by disputing the transaction. Check with the bank/credit card statement online and dispute that way.
