    I think one of my biggest takeaways from this video is that efficient and practical research is more important than timing. Yes, don't cram and use your time properly, but that fact that you did most of your drawings in the span of a week, regardless of wether or not that week was the deadline week or not, just proves that doing effective research in a significantly short amount of time is more effective than having started a long time ago and being inaffective with your practice. I ses this coming to life as I'm applying now. Hopefully I make it in lol :)

    I've been feeling pretty down lately with how it feels like I'm stuck in one career path, but looking at your portfolio and reading how you changed career paths after so long because you knew it was what you wanted makes me feel a million times better. Don't know if I'll go into animation but I'm definitely committing myself to art, seeing this was a big boost. I feel quite a bit less ashamed for having these interests despite being in radically different fields of study to what I'm currently doing. Hopefully a year from now I'll be making artwork like when I was in high school. Here's hoping, and thank you for posting this.

      It's really humbling to hear that I was able to provide even a little inspiration !😭 Many of us are conditioned to think we have to pursue one field and stick to it from the start, but having varied interests and life experiences makes you a better storyteller and a better artist. I wouldn't be the artist I am now without having worked in labs and done bio internships, even if the surface skills are totally irrelevant.
      I wish you the best, and good luck on your own art journey!

I really really want to get into Sheridan, but damn, am I so shaken up that I wouldn't be good enough. The ones I'm most concerned about is the animation and character rotation. I've done motion graphics and done some hand-drawn animations, but not much and I'm certainly not confident in my abilities...

    • @driftingnovaart
      @driftingnovaart  3 роки тому +7

      There's no harm in trying! In fact, Sheridan's the only school I've ever seen (at least compared to art schools in the US) that gives you a graded rubric, which means if you don't get in, you can see exactly where you need to improve for next time! That's why a lot of applicants re-apply to Sheridan, and often see big improvements in their abilities+score each attempt. Many of my classmates didn't get in their first attempt: don't get too hung up on "not good enough", it just takes time and practice.

    Thank you so much for making this video!! I’ve always wondered how applicants handled the portfolio and it’s kinda comforting to know that I don’t have to panic that much until the deadline. I was wondering how long it took for you to make that animatic and storyboard in your personal section?

    • @driftingnovaart
      @driftingnovaart  3 роки тому +2

      The storyboard i made over 2 weekends. The animatic was made in a what I can only describe as a fever dream of a break week where I had 10 days off from class, and needed to finish it for an informal screening that month (but i had rough boards and layouts done beforehand. the 10 days was just to draw all the final animatic frames)

      2 years is plenty of time to keep improving!! And there's a lot of luck involved around how competitive the application cycle is each year. A lot of people don't make it in the first try: remember that I'm like...6 years older than my classmates lol. Even though i wasn't studying art, I've had more time to practice and mature critically. Good luck!!

    2) do I have to make the figure drawing in conte/charcoal or can I use graphite?

      I don't have any specific videos in mind, but definitely look up resources on 1-point/2-point vanishing points as a first step into drawing in perspective! And then practice framing and composition: obviously don't copy a photograph in your final piece, but I find looking at photos or movie stills of interior shots and doing a quick sketch of it for practice will help you visualize 3D space better.

    i've got a few questions, so I'm really hoping you see this comment--i'm a senior and i'll be graduating in may; i've had a huge interest in animation and character design for a few years now, and i'm thinking about going to a college in canada (mainly because the tuition is supposed to be lower) because i've heard good things about animation coming from there.
    Watching this video, i know i have a LOT to try and improve on in a relatively short amount of time, but as long as I put in the work, hopefully i'll get to where I want to be, eventually......
    Do you feel like you've learned a lot at Sheridan?? and do you think that what you've learned there so far would put you in a good position to work at an animation studio in the future, if you wanted to?
    What things do you think are the most important to emphasize in an animation portfolio? Are there specific things to avoid?
    I don't think there's any way I'll meet the application deadline for this year--I have way too much to learn and less than a month to apply for equal consideration, but I'm just curious to hear what you think; if you have any answers or advice, I'd really appreciate hearing anything from you

      The kind of technical director I am is a pipeline technical director, so I am on the more technical side than the artistic side (but I'm going to take some online courses to learn Maya, Katana, nuke) . Specifically, I use a lot of python and other scripting languages for example, MEL for Maya. If we're looking at 2D, Toon boom harmony has a scripting API as well. I mostly make tools for importing, exporting, and just overall quality of life improvements for the pipeline but that's just a pinch of the whole technical director job. I really want to go to Sheridan to study animation! There's something I read in their admissions requirements that is bothering me a little bit. It said:
    Sheridan has been granted consent by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities to offer the animation degree for a further seven-year term starting April 29, 2019 and subject to renewal thereafter. Application to the Ministry for renewal of the consent is a prescribed and cyclical requirement for degree programs at all Ontario colleges. Sheridan will ensure that all students admitted to the Honours Bachelor of Animation program during the period of consent will have the opportunity to complete the program within a reasonable time frame. Credentials earned during the period of consent remain valid even if Ministry consent to offer the program is withdrawn in the future.
    (I don't understand the paragraph below⬇)
    Prospective students are responsible for satisfying themselves that the program and the degree will be appropriate to their needs (e.g., acceptable to potential employers, professional licensing bodies or other educational institutions).
    Can you basically explain to me what they're saying? I'll really appreciate it.

    • @driftingnovaart
      @driftingnovaart  3 роки тому +1

      Hi there! That's actually pretty accurate. I paid 29k CAD (about 14500 per semester) for my first year of Sheridan: this includes tuition and program fees, but not residence since we were remote. That's the price for international students: Canadian citizens pay MUCH lower tuition fees, about 10k CAD per year!

    So since you already have a degree from Berkeley in biology, did you apply for the masters degree in film animation at sheridan?

    • @driftingnovaart
      @driftingnovaart  3 роки тому +2

      Nope! I was only interested in their Honours Bachelors of Animation. Most masters programs are for those that want to study animation as fine arts or independent filmmaking. Most of the well-known animation programs in the US and Canada--and the ones that focus on practical portfolio skills/ helping you get into the industry--are undergraduate.

    Some questions: When do applications start? When do they end? And when are you given your results?

    • @driftingnovaart
      @driftingnovaart  3 роки тому +2

      Applications officially start when they release that year's portfolio instruction PDF on their website: which was mid-October in 2019, and mid-November in 2020 (I think it was delayed due to covid complications). They're due during the last week of February, and I got my results on March 19th!

      Yeah my layouts were done in Photoshop! I freehanded the actual drawing tho. Using built in perspective tools tends to make things look stiff and traced.

    Hi if you don't mind I got a few questions. Are there mature students in the program because I'm insecure that I'll be the oldest one there and also do you think there's a part time course load?

    • @driftingnovaart
      @driftingnovaart  3 роки тому

      In just my year, I know of two people in their mid-20's (including myself) and 2 people in their 30's. I don't know how old you are, but it's actually not unusual for adults in their late 30's or older who want a career change to attend the program. Sure most freshmen will be in the 18-20 range, but there's always a handful of older students and no one would judges based on age anyway. Also, our schedules are pre-determined by the school: it's a heavy full-time program that doesn't leave much room for part-time jobs unless you are VERY efficient at drawing or are willing to sacrifice some quality on assignments ;-;
