  • Learn how to catch trout in this beginners’ guide to fishing. Shrimp and scuds are popular food sources for trout and other fish in British Columbia’s freshwater lakes. TV personality and fishing icon, Brian Chan, covers the lifecycle of the caddisfly and fishing strategies for targeting trout feeding on the shrimp and scuds.
For more information on freshwater fishing in British Columbia, Canada, visit www.gofishbc.com
Brian shows some examples of shrimp and scud patterns, the optimal gear set-up, and retrieval techniques. The angler’s goal is to imitate the behaviour of shrimp and scuds so that trout will snap up the tackle. The largest trout in B.C. are usually found in lakes with large populations of shrimp, so shrimp patterns are an essential part of an angler’s tackle box.

One of the rare sightings of Brian Chan in his natural habitat, not landing a monster trout.
Yes I know, this is an instructional video, but still, I think we were ALL expecting to see a hook set here!
    Thx B

Worked like a charm, was super tough fishing threw on a scud and threw it close to shore where I noticed some fish feeding. Retrieved it just like this and bam, fish on!

This technique of using full sinking lines and going deep can only work if you are on a boat. If you are on the bank and casting beyond the drop off, you will be guaranteed to snag or collect vegetation at every retrieve.

From Brian: I would be fishing them on a floating line, no indicator and upstream presentation with mending as the line drifts back. Also using weighted scud patterns in the appropriate size of the naturals.
