To a certain extent, OTHERWISE was inspired by three artists:
From William Kentridge I was able to understand that anything can become something else. From Anselm Kiefer I was given to believe that no matter what their behaviour, people are for the most part seeking something higher, something beyond subsistence and self. Thirdly, in the work of Storyboard P, I saw that masterful technique hidden behind simplicity leads to expression as revelation.
In fact, the two different backgrounds of Storyboard P, the dancer,
and Hugh Levick, the composer, are relevant but overwhelmed by a deep past of shared unknowables. It is therefore not a coincidence that the two artists work compellingly together: the disjointed and discordant harmony that exists between the dance of Storyboard P and Levick’s music is a mutual reclaiming of common roots which have been eclipsed by Time and History. These ancient sources give the lie to banal polemics of separation and difference.
OTHERWISE also seeks to be the song of which Hans Jonas speaks: “Thus protected against both unreasonable hope and inevitable disillusion, I advance with a certain joy on the ground become desert, ready to meet the metaphysics already declared so often to be dead, so much is it better to be guided by it to a new defeat than to no longer hear its song.”
