- Experiments showing the phenomenon of catalytic oxidation of acetone using copper oxide as a catalyst.
We will see copper coins, pieces of copper wire, cupronickel coins, etc., that when heated, their surface oxidizes to copper (II) oxide CuO. This copper oxide acts as a catalyst in the oxidation of acetone. The products of this catalytic oxidation reaction of acetone are: acetaldehyde, carbon dioxide and water. In addition, other intermediate products are formed such as ketene or ethanone (CH2=C=O) and methane (CH4).

Catalytic oxidation of acetone is a chemical process in which acetone (CH3COCH3) is oxidized to more oxidized products using a catalyst. One of the common methods to carry out this reaction is by employing a metallic oxide catalyst such as copper oxide (CuO) or chromium oxide (Cr2O3), often supported on a porous material like alumina.
The mechanism of catalytic oxidation of acetone generally involves the following steps:
Adsorption: Acetone and the oxidant (such as molecular oxygen, O2) are adsorbed onto the catalyst surface.
Desorption: The adsorbed acetone and oxidant desorb from the catalyst surface.
Reaction: Acetone and the oxidant react in the gas phase or at the catalyst-gas interface to form oxidation products. In the case of acetone, it can be oxidized to compounds such as acetic acid (CH3COOH) or acetone peroxide (CH3C(O)OOH).
Desorption of products: The reaction products desorb from the catalyst surface.
Acetone can be completely oxidized to acetic acid through this process, or intermediate products like acetone peroxide may form, depending on the reaction conditions and the type of catalyst used. The efficiency and selectivity of the reaction can vary depending on factors such as temperature, partial pressure of oxygen, acetone/oxygen molar ratio, and catalyst characteristics. Catalytic oxidation of acetone is an important process in the chemical industry for synthesizing value-added oxidized chemicals.
