General admission at COTA used be a great deal. They have since put grandstands in most of the locations where you could enjoy the racing. And it is more crowded than ever.
This is a GREAT list! As one who goes to about 6 F1 races a season I think Kym’ list is spot on. Two other F1 musts. (Bucket lists)- 1. Hot laps. Like the grid walks these cannot be purchased. If you know someone on the teams or one of their sponsors and can talk your way into one or do something for them where they want to give you one, they are worth it. 2. Attending at least one race on the start finish grandstand. There is nothing like getting to see the F1 grid information and all the pre-race preparations that the teams do to get the cars ready to go. It’s quite elaborate and if you haven’t seen it it’s really great. Also there you’ll get to see all the pit stops which can be very exciting. One to avoid- the Miami start finish grandstand in the unshaded rows (about the lower 2/3 of the grandstand). Miami is held at a hot time of the year, and this stand in the unshaded rows faces the direct sunlight in a very humid environment during the hottest part of the day when the action is going on. Sit there and you are going to broil. Everyone who I know is that there has had the same experience. Super hot.
Thanks Kym, I went up in a helicopter with a Ferrari weather specialist during the British GP about 20 years ago. We went off cloud chasing and reporting back to the pits. We went as far as Gaydon, over the Aston Martin factory after it had just been built. I got to meet Schumacher that day too, I strapped him in after he won and it will stay with me forever. He had an aura I’ve never felt before. Looking forward to the 25 season. ❤
"strapped him in after he won"? So you were putting him back in his box to be shipped to the next race. Finally, proof that he wasn't human, although his driving was a big enough tell.
I think this should be 14, versus 15. After all, us commoners cannot get to the view for number 12… 😂 Thanks for sharing. Ps: the outtakes are hilarious!
Having seen Senna race in the '80s, I'd love to see the memorial at Imola. I recently saw the cement plaque at the Senna chicane at the old Adelaide F1 track (with his handprints on it) but wasn't sure how authentic his handprints were (they were quite small). It also looked a bit neglected and forgotten. Would love to see some of the other memorials around the world some day.
Another thing to avoid if you like the sport is the general admission tickets and Monza. You have access to the event and thats it. Only one overcrowded screen far from the action is available. It was quite the letdown. I had no idea who won or what happened the whole race. Nowhere was a spot available to have a glimpse at the track since it was overcrowded. Needless to say, now I know to pay for the much better tickets.
@@KymIllman That was insane. Lines of easily 200 people and I found only 2 places to refill water. The year I was there, 2022, they had this weird token thing where you had to line up to buy tokens because any food or drinks including bottled water could only be purchased with tokens. They ran out of tokens quali day and again race day. We had to wait hours in line to get tokens because workers couldn't run to replenish the tokens fast enough. It was such a organizational mess.
Been looking at tickets to a race for a couple of years but the prices are just so astronomical that they can't be justified, especially when you have to add in travel costs. Too bad. Would love to see one someday.
And a lot of tracks are in the middle of nowhere too Here in the UK silverstone is not only very expensive but also a nightmare to get to I know it’s the same situation for places like Suzuka, Spa, Austria
Kym looks like an experienced photographer, who has been there always, however he shot 147 races. Alonso raced over 400Gps, and lewis over 350. They are eternal. There is plenty of people following f1 now that never saw them as young promissing drivers. Crazy
@ They should just make it work. I was at the Vegas GP at the last turn and we had to watch the podium celebration on the TV when we could’ve just walked 200 yards to it.
Excellent bucket list Kym! I’ve been lucky to see Monaco from the harbour grandstand, the Vegas Sphere (for a U2 concert, not during F1), walk the circuit at Canada after the race, and to *drive* on the circuit at Spa, Zandvoort, Red Bull Ring (back when it was the A1 Ring) and COTA. As a long-time F1 fan from California (when F1 raced at Long Beach), these were special experiences.
I grew up here but the only time I went to the Belgian GP was that rainy one that got cancelled. I'm going back this year, for the first time with an actual paaid-for ticket.
Great list Kym as always. Out of the 18 (including 3 bonus) been lucky enough to do about half, cannot wait to tick the majority of them off by end of this year likely except for the South American ones. Cant wait to see you at the races and the paddock
Extortionate accomodation, flights and at times impossible transport to track, overpriced or poor food, merch and overpriced bucket hats 😊. You need to be a top f1 driver to afford more than one race. Love my F1 but deliberately delayed a trip to Vegas yo miss the race. My hotel overlooking the strip and a main corner cost $75 aud but a week earlier was $1700 usd. Frankly its better on TV listening to Crofty, blundel, kravitz etc. See it all, replays, pits, strategy etc. not free but close to it.
My wife just asked which one of these I wanted to go to. Ha! Although I'll have to think about las Vegas since it's drivable to get there. Then I started telling her about when my friend Pat and I went to Watkins Glen in 77 and 78 ish for F1. that was fun.

As a fellow Aussie, from Brisbane, and an F1 follower since the 80's, it took me until 2002 (It was for my 40th Birthday) before I could afford to go to the Australian Grand Prix. It also coincided with Mark Webbers first F1 race, where he finished 5th, in a Minardi. Since then, as much as I have wanted to go again, I simply cannot afford, or justify, spending the ridiculous amount of money they want for tickets. It is sad that the average punter has been priced out of the sport. Bit like the outrageous debacle that is the F1 Grid walk before the races. Just these egotistical, so called " celebrities'", who have no idea or care about F1, just so they can be "seen". Sigh....😥
One look at your previous comments and you are clearly biased. Hating Lewis is a fair bias for many a supporter. Believing in "the British bias" is just ignorant.
